This is what happens to mine:

Hold down the buttons, and the white apple pops up, after about 5 seconds, it disappears again, every now and then i can hold them down for 10 seconds and i get a picture with an iTunes logo and a chord pointing towards the logo. Then once that pops up, my iTunes finds my iPod. It says "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode, you must restore the iPod...etc" i hit 'Okay' & 'Restore & Update'. it extracts it then it says "iPod could not be restored. Error 3194
