@MrTrashcan1: I first heard the song by Ray Stevens as well...but I didn't think it was a joke as I'm familiar with both the serious and comical sides of Ray. His 1972 recording sounded incredible much like this performance does. I don't believe there's ever been a wrong way to perform this song no matter who sings it.
