From Peer Gynt's second act, when the shiftless, selfish youth finds himself, in a dream, in the Hall of the Troll King, facing for the first time his inner demons --and trying to embrace them. The piece is magnificent because it gives you the feeling of being chased by your own dark side.
i heard this once in elementry school during music class and it gave me chills and totally enthralled me...25 years later, it still hasn't lost its effect! LOL
fantastic. Only one problem with this opus - it's too damn short! Although it's very simple to play on one instrument (at least it's like that on guitar I don't know about violins etc.) the way it develops dynamically at the end is so damn brilliant - makes the hair on my neck rise.
Uhm... I disagree that he nailed the music. At 1:39 the music changes the tempo, one bar late than usual. Of course this is due Järvi's interpretation, an entire orchestra cant miss at the same time, but sounds really odd. At 2:10 the Tubas are too loud, and the cymbal player isn't that good. And at 1:04 something is strang, couldn't find out what, sounded like an extra pizzicato string, maybe the guy who lost the string lost it at that time. XD
Most amazing. While the conductor is not the dazzling and agile type (in comparison to the likes of Rattle or Dudamel), the performance is still outstanding and monumental. On of my favorite classical pieces.
WELL, DOGGONE IT,NEEME!! You used to take this at Grieg's prescribed tempo ("alla marcia e molto marcato," 138 to the quarter note). I know from your late-1980s CD! That speed's the only way to really make it effective.
@redhotchiliangel Well you can be an immature child, or you could simply acknowledge that Concertgebouw was voted the best orchestra in the world by Gramophone. I even gave you the option to your opinion without me having to tell you this, but you obviously don't respect others opinions, because you were such a prick.
@MercifulMe Berliner Philharmoniker and Concertgebouw are the best of the best = ) Somebody erased the piano concerto of beethoven with Uchida and Concertgebou = (
@MercifulMe The inmature child is you. Look: i said "This is the best orchetra in MY OPINION" I dont said: "Shut up idiot" or something like that. If you are here for insult people, i dont want to discuss with you. Pace and take care.
@Glouryian, I respectfully disagree. Subtlety is not the same as lacking energy. Not every conductor needs to behave like a butt-wriggling young dude. The orchestra would not have played with such brio without Maestro Jarvi's direction. If you log into BP's digital concert hall and watch his interview, you will find that his views of music and technology are quite updated compared to some other conductors of his generation.
@hannaalmacy You are right. I highly dislike some of those modern conductors, who are trying to make a show out of themselves. Perhaps the shown scenes were not chosen accurately, but my opinion remains, that Mr. Järvi in this case -not generally- loses a bit of vitality and authority in the communication to the orchestra. But I am sorry, if somebody gets offended -I did not want to be harsh.
Im sorry to say that, but the conductor felt a bit displaced here. Most of the energy came out of the orchestra and felt like it was not lead properly.
Impressive performancy anyhow. But could have been better obviously. :)

if you play this, and your arm doesn't fall off by the end of this song, then you are not playing it fast enough.
