  • Hinkley works for torchwood?

  • And Sondheim is NEVER easy to sing, anyone who's tried knows that, and they REGULARLY make it look effortless!! As it should look!

  • I can't count how many times I come back to this video. It really works so very well. I love the blend of John and Ruthie's voices together. Stunningly attractive people with devastating talent. What's with all the hate?!

  • this is one of the hardest songs to take out of context. but john and ruthie do a really great job with this. not an easy task at all.

  • this woman is such a mezzo.

    lolz

  • Brilliant performance by two extremely talented people but this is so dark and chilling in Assassins, I have to say I prefer the original.

    Still, love these two.

  • Maybe I'm weird, but I find this just as creepy out of context. If I only saw this clip, I'd assume they were about to go crazy and have a mutual suicide or something.

  • In my own opinion, these two sound better than the actual Assassins singers.

  • @masteraj57 It's John Barrownan, how could you expect anything less than awsome?

  • Hey, it's Capt. Jack!

  • One of the most played songs on my ipod. Their voices fit together so beautifully! Especially at 2:25. It's flawless!

  • john and ruthie are always amazing when they sing together as well as solo

  • Now I just want to see him in a production of Assassins.

  • What I love about this is it proves (as if any more proof than the actual lyrics were needed) how absolutely brilliant his lyrics for this song are.

In the context of the show, it's a disturbing anthem of devotion sung by 2 unbalanced, obsessed individuals. Yet, out of context, it can become a powerful declaration of affection & ardor between 2 lovers.

While some may call it cheesy & shame them for taking it out of context, it should be celebrated, as it truly showcases the lyrical versatility.

  • Ruthie looks gorgeous here! I've only ever seen her in the 10th Anniversary taping of Les Miserables with that long wavy, frizzy blonde wig...

  • They just work so well together.

  • What year was this he looks so young

  • Ruthie has such an amazing voice.

  • These lyrics don't work with the new context at all; it turns two fanatically insane characters into two boring and pathetic ones. Also lines like "I would come take you from your cell" (and that's not the only one) make no sense out of context. Way to ruin a song guys!

  • @UsuallyThinks I kinda think it's funny though-you can *almost* make this a normal pop song. In fact, done this way, it's about as creepy as say, "Grenade". Lots of so-called love songs are creepy as fuck when you actually read the lyrics.

And anyway, people try to sanitize songs all the time-think what so many people did with Randy Newman's "Sail Away".

  • @UsuallyThinks "I would come take you from your cell" means "i give you freedom" in the new context. I understand all that they wanna say.

And John and Ruthie are one of my favourite duet on stage. They make me feel better.

  • It's stupid how 'Jodie' and 'Charlie' are replaced with 'Darling'. I mean, I can see why, but it just doesn't fit imo. And Ruthie's and John's voices don't go together well. Ruthie's is a lot more elaborate, in not necessarily a good way.

  • @ResplendentShadows

I know what you mean. They chopped the balls off. The point of this song is the irony. There's no irony here.

  • Where are they singing this on??

  • how terrible to put such a great song into such an awful and cheesy context.

  • Boo!!! Without the creepy context this song is kind of vapid!!!!!

  • I would like to be in Ruthie's shoes ... :P

  • It's amazing how with a few lyric changes this song can go from chilling and creepy to cheesy love song. :P Beautiful song!

  • Já cantei este trecho "Unworthy of Your Love", que é um trecho maravilhoso de Sondheim! John Barrowman e Ruthie Henshall são espetaculares, tenho este DVD "Putting it Together". Bravo!!!

  • Já cantei este trecho "Unworthy of Your Love", que é um trecho maravilhoso de Sondheim! John Barrowman e Ruthie Henshall são espetaculares, tenho este DVD "Putting it Together". Bravo!!!

  • @autopolydidact yeap, I agree. She sound like honey or velvet , and he's voice like a bell or crystal. And they are perfect together!

  • This performance was actually recorded back in February, 2000. I know because I was in the audience while one of the shows was being recorded. We had no idea the show was being taped until we walked into the theatre and were made to sign waivers before we were allowed to take out seats. They recorded two performances and then split and edited the footage together for the DVD.

  • 4 people don't know real music

  • Her voice is like honey.

  • I found this video in a playlist of "cute" love songs. Hehe.

  • The note that Mr. John Barrowman, artist, sings in 0:14 is, simply, the most beautiful sound in the world I've ever heard. Tnks Mr.JB.

  • Aww, man! I wanted to love this video soooo much! I practically came at the thought of John Barrowman singing this song, but they totally fucked up what makes this song good.

  • Best version of this song I've ever heard hands down!! I was at this performance while it was being taped for television. Technically, they recorded two live performances of the show back in Feb 2000 so they could edit properly. I remember because we had to sign waivers before we were let in the theatre. Amazing show!!!!

  • Both so beautiful!

  • Okay yes it's out of context, but the essence of the song is still there and the almost insane passion still shines through like it does in Assassins

  • Was involved in a production of Assassins a few years back. Much more moving than I anticipated. Especially this song. x

  • In context... out of context... it's still a beautiful and powerful song! I love this song so much! :)

  • Can anyone tell me what scene this is from? I'm going right through my book scene by scene and I can't find it at all :S

  • @TheMediaJudge1 - Scene 10 of ASSASSINS. Squeaky Fromme and John Hinckley sit together in Hinckley's rumpus room exchanging reflections about their love objects, Charles Manson and Jodie Foster. Fromme mocks Hinckley for being in love with a woman he's never met and he orders her out. After she goes, he sings ("Unworthy of Your Love"). Fromme returns to join him, singing of her love for Manson. - Creepy, eh? I like the song much better out of context of the show.

  • @theBestArts Cheers :) I've found it now it really does have some great lyrics which give that "creepy" tone and I agree that this is a very good version of the song :)

  • I love Ruthie Henshall's powerful emotions.. simply <3

  • beautiful. simply beautiful. John and Ruthie work work so well together. <3

  • I love this. <3

  • weird seeing this as a romantic duet. I like john & ruthie but the original is way better

  • Don't get me wrong, the voices are great, but the context here is so far from the original it's absurd. I respect artistic license, but I think this takes it way too far.

  • This version is amazing. I don't know the original too well, only listened to it from the OBC album.....and i prefer this. Maybe just a context thing but i think Barrowman and Henshall do Sondheim justice. Well Done :)

  • they ruined this song

  • @nickflavor how?

  • @utoybabypa the point of this song in assassins is how it's musically just a stereotypical/trite love song with nontraditional lyrics. if you make the lyrics normal it's just a boring saccharine mess.

  • @nickflavor I get what you mean...when things become out of context its essence wavers.

  • I love how they took a really creepy song and made it romantic. This version gives me chills

  • omg he looks so young!

  • The "Love" at :58 was pure love. John Barrowman, you are a God.

  • if John was straight, they would make a great pair.

  • they're both such fantastic actors and singers. I would have loved to see them performing together. I still hope to see John perform someday.

  • does anyone know where can get the audio for this??

  • The note that John Barrowman sings at 0:14 is the most beautiful I've ever heard in the world.

You Aaaaaaaare (wind and water and sky)

  • the original version of this from assassins is shit lol so props to Ruthie and John for making ths an awesome song

  • Just beautiful!

  • This is such a beautiful song and sung with such passion too. Two very talented performers and a real treat. Thanks for uploading it.

  • What a great performance.

  • Love everything about this, John...Ruthie...the song...John&Ruthie singing together...they're amazing!

  • Great voice!

  • What a fantastic number. John Barrowman shines here... and Ruthie Henshall is absolute perfection. That lady is one of the most talented women on the stage in recent years. These two combined with one of Sondheim's beautiful melodies makes for a perfect moment. Thanks for posting!

  • I just love this song!!! The first time I hear it, I actually thought the context was more like how it's done here, sweet and romantic, not creepy. Either way, it's a great song, and Ruthie Henshall and John Barrowman do SUCH an amazing job with it here!

  • love this song

john is gorgeous he can do no wrong in my book

gosh ruthie her acting in this is just incredible ... and her voice beautiful

wonderful chemistry between them as wel

    x

  • The naffest version of this song ever recorded. Puts Music Theatre back 20 years.

  • LOVE! Ever since I first heard this song, I've loved it, and you don't know how happy it makes me that there's a version with John Barrowman singing it. He has such an amazing voice, and I love him. :)

  • This is a beautiful song, their voices are perfection <3

  • the missus loves john barrowman and i just them both singing together

  • DO CARALHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • mp3iffy now lets you grab cd-quality VEVO videos and HD YouTube videos to convert into mp3s. AWESOME> google mp3iffy.

  • gosh, he's so amazing :O

  • This has to be the best rendition of this song ever...there is so much feeling in this! It makes me want to cry!! Its so beautiful!

  • i love this but i can't help missing the original context lol its just so brilliant and disturbing

  • Wow, this was one of my favorite songs off of Putting It Together. If I'm honest, I haven't seen any of Sondheim's other works; after hearing these beautiful songs, though, I'm definitely interested in hearing more.

  • i would never picture her singing this but it was a nice change

  • They are perfect together!

  • canadastar1028: I have seen Ruthie in Les Miz 10th anniversary, too ´. She is a very good singer and beautiful, too. I´m from Germany, but I think, many english singers are better then some german singers. But I like a german singer too: Helene Fischer

  • I know he's gay but what talented babies they would have lol

  • Wow! I watched this for Barrowman but Ruthie Henshall totally stole the show! I'm gonna have to find more of her, I've never heard of her before now.

  • That was absolutely amazing! They're both excellent! I wish I could see them together live! =D

  • I don't know who I love more. John or Ruthie. She absolutely blew me away as Fantine in the Tenth Anniversay of Les Miz.

  • oh, they sing so brilliant ... but he looks a bit like he's on drugs here ... xD

  • John and Ruthie are one of theatres great partnerships :D

I've had the privilage of seeing them toether and they are amazing.

  • I love how John can sing his ass off in a musical, yet he's so over the top on Torchwood. I just love it. Praying for another series/season of Torchwood.

  • @DMR2006 hate to break it but the last series was that five part one, and i still hven't seen it. he is focusing on the music buisness now

  • @bethlou30 actually, there might be another series of Torchwood, RTD says that he has a script ready to right for 13 part series and they just need funding and for John to be free, RTD said that Torchwood wouldn't be Torchwood without John Barrowman

  • @DMR2006 consider your "prayers" answered

  • @DMR2006 well, consider your prayers answered. Although I don't know how I will feel about a new team

  • @DMR2006 It is being filmed now! you can look at the site and see some of the new character info too!

  • I know this is in completely different context to the original but it's still my favourite love song of all time...

  • I love it when they sing 'anything you can do"togather

  • OMG *__* They are so good, both of them. And this is a beautiful song <33

  • It's an amazing song whether in context or not!!!

  • These two break my heart.... One of the best singing partnerships EVER!! Love it whenever they perform together. :-)

  • Even though the context is different in here than in Assasins, it is still a beautiful song :)

And Ruthie and John sing it terrifically :)

  • @LOVEROFANIMALS66666, What's the context in Assasins?

  • @TheMightyJeffers

In Assassins, John Hinckley (who tried to assassinate Reagan) is singing to Jodie Foster, the actress he's obsessed with, and Squeaky Fromme (who tried to assassinate Ford) is singing to Charles Manson. It's obsessive and chilling and very very creepy. I really like this version of it, though, it's impressive how they can change the context so much and still make it so effective.

  • You have to hand it to sondheim; Assassins had an obvious topic for a musical.

    This song is brilliant!

  • ive had this in my head 4 bout a week or so now !! cant stop singin it !!

  • Comment removed

  • when was this?

  • 1999 - see video information box.

  • Sorry, i had read the information box :) its just that I had seen 1999 quoted on this video but when I searched it up 2000 was quoted. So I was a little confused!

    Sorry again.

  • youknowthatillforget, sorry if my reply sounded abrupt. There are often two dates published for a DVD of a concert performance. The earlier date is the performance date, while the later date is the DVD release date. Different sources cite the dates differently, so there is often some confusion. I try to be consistent, but I sometimes err.

  • :D

Its fine. Thanks for your help! xx

  • fabulous!

  • OMG. They are fantastic!

  • too bad the character isn't

  • 2:35 and 3:11... oh, how I wish I were her.... great performance though

  • great sound but why are they doing these bizarre accents? vocal affectations? abba?

  • ruthie henshall is british

  • and john is scottish

  • The note John sings in 0:14 is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard in the world. "you aaaaaaare".

  • John is absolutely gorgeous!

    I love his voice!

Ruthie is really good as well!

  • i love ruthie~

  • hahaha has anyone noticed this is the song were johns pants were split in the back i dont know if you can tell but this is the song

  • are you serious, because of your word I went through this for several times but I didn't find out that?

  • Yup, it says so in his auto biography although that didn't happen on the dvd so that's why you can't see it. (:

  • It happened the night before this performance that makes it onto the DVD. He mentions it in the DVD outtake.

Poor us, we were robbed on seeing Barrowman's bum (er, again). ;P

  • ahh... but we got to see it in Torchwood!! whoop!!!

  • omg, such a pretty song, and I love both their voices!

  • I love both, they are great

  • wat musical was this? thanks...

  • "Putting It Together".

The DVD is highly recommended - but region 1 only (US/Canada DVD players or worldwide PCs.)

  • The song itself is from "Assassins".

  • Assassins i think

  • gorgeous! they really capture the heart of the song. their voices resonate deeper than the notes on the page.

  • Wow! How old was he? He looks so fabulous young!!

  • ahhh! it's so sweet, these two are great together!

  • Such a great song, and that key change when Ruthie Henshall comes in...ahhhh :)

  • They're not ignoring it, Squallboy1, the whole song was put in a completely different context in 'Putting it together' than in 'Assassins' - and imho it works brilliant in both musicals.

  • Okay. I guess it was just off-putting because I only really know about Assassins.

    Thanks.

  • No problem. I was a little irritated at first, too, when I heard John B. and George Hearns version of 'Pretty Women' (which is originally from 'Sweeney Todd') :D

  • i luv this both john and ruthie are fab

  • love it!!!

    <3

  • does anyone know if this cast of Putting it Together made a recording? I have been looking for it on cd and can't find it.

  • No, this cast did not make an audio recording. The original cast is available on CD but not DVD; the reverse is true here.

  • he looks SO young there!

  • Hehe... strangely enough I think he looks a lot hotter now than he did then :-D

  • actually I agree!

  • Hehe... good to know I'm not the only one :-D

  • <333

    *sniff*

    Perfecctionnn.

  • LOVE this song <3
