Great tribute. I've been watching Mr. Hoover do his routine since I was a kid, starting at the Edwards Air Force Base Air Show during the late sixties. Even then, he was considered a legend. His Energy Management routine was so impressive that my first pilot's license was in gliders, because I was inspired by Mr. Hoover to learn how to fly a plane without power! Ever since, I've had no fear of losing an engine in flight... Thank you, Mr. Hoover.
"It is my sad duty to tell all of you who read Bob's blog that Bob passed away this past Friday, August 13. How much he will be missed is incalcuable. Thank you all for all the support you have given him. I'm his wife. He was a great man."
I had the pleasure of seeing Bob do his amazing "energy management" demonstration at the Hillsboro airport near Portland, Oregon, many years ago. In this particular routine, he did all those maneuvers with the props feathered, which seemed to go on forever, and you just couldn't believe that plane could stay up that long without power. When he finally re-started the engines for the landing, I heard a lady behind me let out a big gasp of relief, and then say "Thank You ! ".
Outstanding video! I am fortunate in that I got to see Bob perform in 1972, What he out that aircraft through was unbelievable. Bob Hoover became one with the plane when he got in it.
Very nice all the way around. Great flying, great music, great animation and tribute to a really great pilot, Bob Hoover. I was fortunate enough to see one of his last performances in the Shrike a few years ago at Sun-n-Fun, Lakeland, Florida.
Neat video, I was wondering how you were going to do the "one-wheel" landings, with Flight Simulators' incorrectly modeled rudder/yaw, and... you had to kind of "fake" it there, dang it.
(MSFS simply rams your nose in the direction of rudder deflection, without accurately depicting the effect on wing roll/drop - It's why you can't do "real" slips to landing in MSFS, other than in custom payware aircraft that model it better but still not strictly correctly.)
Back in the 1970`s when I was in my mid 30s, I met and flew with Bob Hoover in his Aero Commader after and air pageant in Durban Southt Africa wher he was guest of honour
OUT STANDING video and great "yanking and banking"!
I have watched Mr. R.A. Bob Hoover fly over the years, first in his yellow P-51 and then in the Commander. He is a pilot's pilot, a true stick and rudder man.
Thanks! Actually I feathered them for a second, but accidently unfeathered them. hehe. FS2004, doesn't simulate prop drag anyway so I guess c'est la Vie. :)
Thanks. This is FS2004, I got the plane as freeware on avsim's site. The song is from the movie "blood diamon" and the track is called "so you thought I wouldn't call"
Normally I see watching flight sim vids as a waste of time but this is pretty damn good. Having the soundtrack from one of the best movies ever helps too.
Nice job. you need to feather your props. i think it's awesome that you were able to do it without the props feathered. That creates a lot of drag. Nice tribute!
Fantastic, I think I saw his AeroCommander twin airplane at New Aviation Museum at Washinton Dulles Airport. I have watched Discovery Channle Video of Bob Hoover airshow routine many many times. Kitty Hawk, North Caroline, the birth place of aviation is another nice place to visit. My first YouTube Video is aerial video from a Cessna 172 over the Golden Gate Bridge.
as of 12/11/08 mr. hoover is still among us. he has retired his act due to F.A.A. grounding him due to some obscure age/ insurance thingy.. however australia has granted him a pilots license.. he can fly anywhere in the world...'cept for the land of the free.
manbird... highest kudos available to you on this most excellent sim.. i saw bob pull this stunt at the chattanooga air show in 1994... a man a dozen feet from me died of a heart attack watching hoover's maneuvers... some folks just cant appreciate art
I dont normally watch flight sim video's on you tube, but I have to say that yours was excellent. Your control of the plane is almost exact to Bob Hoover and I would imagine pretty difficult to replicate on a sim.. well done 5/5
He is the top master pilots and an aviation artister. thank you Manbird, I saw lot of FS2004 videos from you. In my mind, your videos are best among FS2004's, at least then;) did U step to FSX?;) and BTW, I'm excited to see the FS can do these as real. thank you for your good idea, I will try also. another way to respect Bob!
I had not heard of Bob Hoover until I happened to find a video about him today. I was looking for other videos on him and when I saw this one was a simulation I almost stopped it. Im glad I didnt! As a former private pilot and FS enthusiast I can appreciate the work that must have gone into the making of this video. Its a very nice tribute and by far the best simulation video I have ever seen. Well done!
What a fantastic tribute to a national treasure. I had the privilege of seeing Bob Hoover at Oshkosh a number of times - including standing right along the show center taxiway where he would park after performing the energy management series. Being both an aviation nut and a digital video editor, and Im completely impressed with the video. Well-conceived, well executed, well edited, and a fantastic musical choice. I almost expected to see Hoover waving his straw hat out the window at the end.
Im curious... did you capture the entire vid in one FS session, or did you edit together multiple. While I love FS, Im pretty sure I would have made a mess of the Shrike trying to fly that in one shot. RE: seeing him peform - its one of the most graceful shows Ive seen. The ones I saw, he flew with both engines, then on one, then pure dead stick. The sound with both engines off is just eerie (which is why I liked your musical choice so much)
Thankyou milehigh, I wanted to do the manuevers in one session but I couldn't figure out how to show 'proof" so I decided to do one continuous shot throughout all the phases of manuevers. It took me a long time to do the 8 point without plunging into the ground!
After flying the Shrike Commander, sticking my head inside Bob Hoovers Shrike Commander for a look see via permission from the only man he trusted to maintain this beautiful bird, owning/operating one myself...I believe Bob himself would be very proud of this piece. Maybe I'll send it to him myself...
Hi Cueball, you mean the one wheel landing? That was Hover's manuever. You're supposed to land on one wheel, come back up and land on the other, then come back up and land normally. The second wheel landing caused me to touch both but that was the best I could do.
airbus Bob Hoover is the greatest stick and rudder pilot ever. He can do things with airplanes that dazzle even the most veteran of pilots. There is autobiography and a video that follow his career from WWII to current. The Shrike was retired several years ago due to insurance requirements.

Simply beautiful. This is what flying is all about. It just makes you feel so free watching this and listening to the music!!! Thanks once again, William
I didn't watch the video, I made this video. And although I don't claim I can do this in the real thing, (most likely I can not), I am a pilot in real life and with about 20 years practice.. I could probably get pretty close, IMHO. ;)
fabulous work. i have seen him perform at oshkosh a few times, many years ago. He is such an incredible pilot. This tribute actually made me cry. How did you do it? I mean, did you actually pilot the simulator? then you must be a great pilot yourself. or can you program the manouvers? Maybe you got bob to fly the sim?
Hi Cottage and thankyou very much for your kind comments. :), Yes I piloted the sim fo the video. It was a very frustrating experience trying to pull off all of those manuevers without crashing into the ground at the end with no airspeed. But it finally worked out. I'm glad video was pleasing!
I was about to ask the same question regarding Bob Hoover if he was still living. I had the privilege of meeting and flying with him in Durban , South Africa back in 1977 when he performed his aerobatic manoeuvres in his Aero Commander 500B. An incredible pilot
My PC now is probably a standard setup. I'm using Core 2 Dual OC'ed to 3.2Ghz 1 gig ram, sata hard drive, Nvidea 7900 (probably a slow card in comparison to today's video cards)

Cool thanks. I actually used FS2002 for my check rides. I ran the approaches over and over, I love it. I flew the SHorts 360, looks like a shoe box with wings !
OUTSTANDING!! I have made three aviation videos with music using FRAPS and MS Moviemaker of which I am proud. Bust after seeing this one...WOW! I saw Bob hoover do all this in a Shrike and I got his autograph. You broaught back memories and a little tear. Thanks man.
In 1972 I saw Bob Hoover demonstrate the Shrike at an airshow in Alton, IL. That's the only time I saw him fly in person. He did everything in this video and more. Great video, just like 1972 again! Thanks
Wow that is just amazing

keeevan 3 years ago
I didn't watch the video, I made this video. And although I don't claim I can do this in the real thing, (most likely I can not), I am a pilot in real life and with about 20 years practice.. I could probably get pretty close, IMHO. ;)

fabulous work. i have seen him perform at oshkosh a few times, many years ago. He is such an incredible pilot. This tribute actually made me cry. How did you do it? I mean, did you actually pilot the simulator? then you must be a great pilot yourself. or can you program the manouvers? Maybe you got bob to fly the sim?
Really really nice work!

Hi Cottage and thankyou very much for your kind comments. :), Yes I piloted the sim fo the video. It was a very frustrating experience trying to pull off all of those manuevers without crashing into the ground at the end with no airspeed. But it finally worked out. I'm glad video was pleasing!

is this fs10? really can see the difference. the motion is so realistic and the graphics are great, clouds don't look like paintings anymore.
baltarsparklemotion 3 years ago
Hi This is FS2004 using Active sky which is why the clouds are a little more realistic. Thanks for watching!

Thankyou fly310r, I'm glad I didn't dissapoint.

I was about to ask the same question regarding Bob Hoover if he was still living. I had the privilege of meeting and flying with him in Durban , South Africa back in 1977 when he performed his aerobatic manoeuvres in his Aero Commander 500B. An incredible pilot

If there has ever been a better pilot than Bob Hoover, I have no idea who it could have been.

What is your PC strength for running this sim ? DOes it get hung up ? Great video...
erikinhawaii 3 years ago
My PC now is probably a standard setup. I'm using Core 2 Dual OC'ed to 3.2Ghz 1 gig ram, sata hard drive, Nvidea 7900 (probably a slow card in comparison to today's video cards)

Cool thanks. I actually used FS2002 for my check rides. I ran the approaches over and over, I love it. I flew the SHorts 360, looks like a shoe box with wings !

Beautiful! Looks like it was done with X-Plane and the airfield looks like Lindbergh Field in San Diego. Good job!

Thankyou Av8, your right about the field, I'm using FS2004 for the simulator. X-Plane is awesome, wish I still had my copy!!

In 1972 I saw Bob Hoover demonstrate the Shrike at an airshow in Alton, IL. That's the only time I saw him fly in person. He did everything in this video and more. Great video, just like 1972 again! Thanks
