Girls like this do exist. They're just not appreciated by many until they're too old to still be close to. The rareist and most beautiful flower of all just happens to be rooted in a deep pile of crazy and awesome.
@ArticBreakup wow! that's really well said, very blunt and honest and to the point. Hopefully more crazy and awesome will keep such flowers vibrant and flourishing. Best regards!
i love this film, and my nickname is ellie because i can immitate her voice ecactly and do the facial expressions too. although my real name is nowhere near ellie. not that it matters.
I think every little boy dreams of meeting a girl like Ellie. She's outgoing, adventurous, imaginative, full of wonder and not tied down to stereotypes of how girls are supposed to act. The part when she was in the hospital and Carl tried to cheer her up by bringing her her Adventure Book and she pushed it away knowing she was going to die was enough to make a grown man cry.
@crb0129 actually when Carl visits in the hospital Ellie has the book with her which presumably contains the "stuff I'm going to do" section already filled in with the pictures of their life together. Maybe she had just finished that section since she was close to death and was giving it to him to look at which he only does much later... So many subtleties in this movie keep popping up upon multiple viewings...
@j24800 Wow I just went back and looked at the scene again and you can see a tape dispenser and paper and what appears to be scissors on the night stand next to the bed suggesting that she was in fact working on that section right before she died. The amount of detail they put in this movie that most people won't even notice is amazing.
I absolutely LOVE this character: although, I am a brunette! LOL... So great! It's the personality traits that are so hard to describe if you are not a "Barbie": fun, interesting, fearless/not-shy, smart, kind, hearted and loyal. So great... "Adventure IS outhere!" =))
She reminds me of what Beth Moore must have been like when SHE was little. It's a crack up!
Beth Moore is on Youtube also so you can compare. Except Beth Moore is Adventurer Extraordinaire to godliness. And instead of emulating Muntz, it's the Messiah; instead of Paradise Falls, it's Paradise. And she let's you know that all people are welcome to this adventure.
I agree that Ellie is one of my favorite characters I have ever seen on the screen. The only issue I have with your comments is that you demand a flood of characters like here. Ignoring the fact that creating a character of this brilliance is terribly hard work and unlikely to happen often even with talented people trying, success would mean a mass production and drop in significance for such a character. Ellie is this precious of a character in large part because of her rarity. Moderation.
@Judg3m3nt you are right -- not "exactly like her" -- a few other characters carrying her social cultural message of self-realization, optimism, proactive femininity and so on could be charming. And then a full feature and sequels in which Ellie as a young girl is one of the main, central (lasting) characters. Not necessarily a whole crowd of Ellies -- just more Ellie!! : D
I totally agree with the comments you made in the description! Ellie was such a lovable character, it's a shame we didn't see more of her.
Other than unwittingly causing Carl to hurt himself, she's a great role model for kids, encouraging them to use their imaginations, reach out to others, including those who might not be the coolest guys around (Little Carl seems like the kind of kid who'd have difficulty making friends), and take an interest in the big world around them.
i love this its sad and funni all dat the same time
did you guys ever notice that when ellie took his hand carl cheeks got super red? i love the part when he screamed the really high pitch one that was hilarious

@crb0129 those little boys grow up still dreaming of Ellies and hopefully marry one too, just like Carl -- such a wonderful, powerful archetype, huh?
