A favorable review of Actraiser 2! I never thought I'd see the day. I only recently gave this one a serious go, and I have to say... it's great. So the sim element from Actraiser 1 is gone. BIG DEAL. I can see why it's a dealbreaker to some, but if they wanna make a tough action platformer with the same sort of elements, they sure can. Good review, sir.
It's odd. I really don't like side scrollers at all. This game and Bubsy are the only two side scrollers ever made (that I've played; and I've played a lot of them) that I've LOVED! Although I confess, until I saw your review I had no idea the main character was supposed to be the Judeo-Christian God. I always assumed he was supposed to be some Greeko-Roman god. I'm personally glad they changed it outside of Japan because the character has much more characteristics of a pagan god.
I just watched both of your Actraiser reviews. Very enjoyable. Especially comparing the U.S. release, to the European release. Looks like you guys got the better end of the stick, but that will not stop me from enjoying these 16-bit gems. Keep up the retro reviews!
Great review. Certainly captures the frustration of playing through this game. I only finished it once too but didnt even get close on the hardest difficulty setting. Another game from around the same time that was also a pain was Plok, but for other reasons, no password or save system; stuck with it to the end same as with Actraiser 2 though. I guess Its all about the challenge.
It is indeed a masterful game: great art, superb orchestral Yuzo Koshiro score and the attention to teocratic literature are noticed. And yes, crazy like Hell. Which is just what you are battling of course... :)
I enjoyed it much better than the original, without the Populous part.
Spot on review! Your editing skills are really coming on strong and this video response to your original Actraiser video is first rate! This game kicked my butt when it first came out and I've never completed it. But the character animation, art design, and music are fantastic. Tower of Babel stage looks BRUTAL, dang! Candid reactions = priceless. Give you serious credit for taking Actraiser 2 on, kudos man!
I can never get this game to work properly on an emulator. Whenever I try to start a stage the game freezes. I just end up scrolling around the map, unable to start any of the stages. It's Infuriating because I really want to play this.
Has anyone else found this to be the case or am I just being stupid & missing somthing obvious? I'd appreciate any offers of help or advice. Thanks.
Yeah, I know what you mean, I remember I saw the intro sequence and I was all hyped to play it...then it didn't start and I was infuriated...Guess we'll have to get the real versions?
I recently saw NecroVMX do a vid of this game & he said that his American version used to work on his snes emulators, but kept freezing now, so he used a Japanese rom & that seemed to work ok.
I haven't tried it yet. Bit of a bummer since all the text will be in Japanese, but if it works ...
It's an "LG DVD Super Multi DVD recorder" but unfortunately I have a habit of throwing the user manuals for electronics away so I can't be more specific than that. Cost about £140 when I bought it nearly two years ago. It works perfectly except for some reason it hates dual layer DVDs which I found out to the cost of lots of good footage in my original Actraiser review funnily enough.
You must keep your retro games in an airtight vault behind a bookcase because they were in damn good condition, man. I'm so jealous! Seriously, I almost cried when I saw that SNES controller.
Like usual another great review. I laughed out loud when when you screamed Fuck Off to the game. Brought back memories of me ripping off my posters when trying to beat the original metal gear on the nes. Fucking bitter sweet love to that game. You should check out my vids my first video game video is coming soon. Anyways another great review. keep it up.
This is the first time I've watched one of your reviews, and I must say, you did an excellent job. Very informative, in-depth and entertaining. The thing that surprised me the most was that it did NOT feel like eleven minutes had passed; that's how well it kept my interest. 5 stars.
I strugle with sections in Crash Bandicoot 2 and almost end up smashing the controler. So I don't think this game is for me! I must admit, the concept, graphics and theams do look very interesting though.
I remember playing this game years ago. The password feature didn't work on my cartridge for some reason, and the tower just drove me nuts. but it felt so good, when i beat it :)
The music in the game is fantastic, too. This game is probably one of the 10 best ever to appear for super nintendo
Damn. This game looks absolutely epic. Both games did and I would like to take a crack at them at some point. I just need to get a Super Nintendo again. I don't know if you ever played it Dave, but you'd probably be a fan of Demon's Crest on the Super Nintendo. It's made by Capcom, so you probably won't go wrong with it.
Several people have said of Actraiser 2 that its "nearly as good a platformer as Demons Crest". I haven't played the game before, but it sounds interesting.
David, you've done it again! I actually went out and emulated the first Actraiser after seeing your review for it. It made me wonder where a lot of RTS elements came from, and that game looked like it innovated for the whole genre. Thanks mate. Cheers from Dortmund. Guten Reisen'.

Fantastic review. Now I am curious as to what you spent on it! I bought it for the US console and it was fine at the price of $20 complete.
You have made me consider reviewing my own SNES favourites!

I liked when you raged because it showed you as more human than just an elitist narrator that never fails or gets annoyed :P
