  • Banning phones make people even more distracted. Because, now they have to look out for cops while talking on the phone.

  • I think the more important issue is why Katie is trying to look like a teenage boy.

  • Why do they delude themselves that they could do both?

  • I think it's stupid when people try to dial a phone number while they're driving: especially on the freeway.

  • Here is an idea. The time on the phone is probably logged somewhere, and therefore can be shown if not proven. Just because an abuse can be hidden or go on observed, does not mean it is non existent. You go to traffic court, they check your phone records, and maybe then warn the person not to be talking on the phone while driving. I think what should happen is a rapid transition to A. I. driving or self driving cars. Probably soon would be good. This would allow semi impaired people ride.

  • Yes...

Some where along the way of the overall convenience-

    commonsense has gotten overlooked.

Pulling over on the highway for a call isn't the safest thing to do either and i have seen that also.

    Guilty?? yes.

    Denying the problem?? No

Fatigue and overstressed drivers only adds to the problem.

  • Its banned in Australia and has been for sometime, you risk a large ticket if caught. About time the US followed our lead. Anybody who thinks its not dangerous is a idiot!

And yes there are examples of other multitasking, such as women doing their hair while driving or putting on lipstick etc.

    Equally dangerous!!! Equally STUPID!!!!!

  • Police do it everywhere they go, plus they have a computer going on the same time, the stats are bs. Its funded by insurance companies so they can deny cover to you if you were using your phone. A cop is just a person if they are capable of performing the task then so are the rest of us. If we aren't then neither are they. So which is it? can't have your cake and have eaten also.

  • I love how several people who obviously think they have to talk on cell phones are thumbs downing my statement. I've driven through all 48 states and been in close calls and seen the accidents. I know most people can do this safely. Most people can probably drink a beer or two and drive.

There will be something better than cell phones in the future so that everyone will be on touchless, headset-less too. Probably built in to cars like radios on steering wheels. But right now we divide.

  • Require largest companies to allow employees to work /telecommute from home. Stagger work hours. This will alleviate some traffic and help safety all around. Actually, we should ban cell phones (except for emergencies; provide free phone booths and land lines (utilities are SUPPOSED to be free - probably was when it all started - a PUBLIC service, not a private enterprise.) Cell phones are killing off the bee population . There's a 75% decrease. At 100%, Einstein said we'd have 4 years to live.

  • If they're going to ban cellular phones while driving they should also ban eating while driving, putting on make-up while driving, changing clothes while driving, receiving oral sex while driving, using computers while driving, reading newspapers while driving and stopping fights in the back seat while driving ... to name a few.

  • A guy I knew was seriously injured by a cellular phone talking driver. She told the judge "it was a really important call!" The judge and the victim were not impressed.

  • Yell at anyone to get off the phone while driving, 80% will it was an emergency.

Some people can multi-task, others can't chew gum and drive at the same time. Even if they are banned, there is no way enforcement could keep up.

  • Interesting...

    But...

How are they supposed to apply this if they cannot prove a driver is on the phone???

    Just Wondering...

  • "Yeah, mom... I gotta go, some guy's foot is in my windshield."

  • why did she chop her hair off? i like katie but i dont like her haircut...

  • She's goin' for more of a Sarah Palin look.

  • HANG UP AND DRIVE PLEEEZ....

Pretend it is your Mother that you did not see pull out in front of YOU!

  • You are right...

    ctxflyer.

Unfortunately you always have to assume the next driver will do something sudden!!

  • I think theirs pros and cons to this. the Pros are (Since i don't really like Microsoft since i like apple it) it will hurt Microsoft sync if they ban even hand free. I don't talk to people on the phone alot,But i think they should ban texting but than again ur kid is kid nap they don't want the napper to know so they will need to text you for help and not use voice. So i think they should make some law saying pull over to use your cell or only use them if you really really need to.

  • I was driving a fully loaded truck down the street from Dow Chemical in Michigan, and some teen was on a cell phone, looked my way then the other and pulled right out in front of me. I was slowing down and watching closely, but did not expect him to pull out without looking my way again. He hesitated to answer or finish talking and did not realize the time it took. I assume that without the phone, his timing always works but with the phone he is way off and hopefully learned but this is bad.

  • He was probably totally absorbed over talking incessently about nothing.

  • If hands free is going to be a criminal activity then talking in the car is next, or singing along with the music on your radio.

In other words, don't get caught with you lips moving. Better practice stifling those yawns people.

  • The difference is when someone is in your car, they respond to what is going on and generally do not distract you. And when you sing you are the only one in control. But when someone asks you a question and you don't have the sense to tell them 'there is heavy traffic hang on' or something, you are allowing yourself to be distraacted. I've seen people risk their lives betting that I would watch out for them. 99% are holding it and hands free is safer by a mile and should be ok agreed.

  • I was trying to demonstrate the slippery slope all this type of thing inevitably leads to. To keep a long story short one example. Non smoking sections in public places. Now, No smoking even at an outdoor event. I don't smoke and don't care if they kill themselves but I don't believe they should be treated as outcasts. I think that hands free is going far enough and I have it. I know holding the phone is dangerous. Yawning while driving is to. You cannot determine when it will happen.

  • Traffic notwithstanding. I'm betting, being a truck driver you've seen people reading maps, newspapers etc. all while driving. Now we have GPS sitting on the dash and that's legal. At least on the phone you have a chance of watching the road. All of the above you are looking at it and how about that dash-mounted TV.
