I liked this guy. I always thought he was Indian on the show. Turns out he is half white and half arab. He should have become Jadzias love interest. But they kept him down on the show, alot like Robert Beltran and Garret wang on Voyager. It seems the makers wanted to downplay the ethnic angle. They were really just overpaid extras, kind of hypocritical of Star Trek. He is also very direct about the discrimination he and has parents faced growing up, He has a kid by New York native Nana Visitor.
I liked what he said at the end too. And I think, in hindsight, it's amazing that an actor of Sundanese decent, who played a character with an Arabic middle and last name, was part of the Star Trek series. How many arab actors are given an opportunity to play a main character who's a good guy nowadays? Not a whole lot.
I never really noticed Bashir want so entirely white. he isnt really dark so he ist quite like sisko where you see the black guy, he is almost white so no one bothers to think about it realizing he is not as white as o´brien, but who cares whos black and white? after all its just all a shade of grey.
He was dead on right at the end too. Not once during the entire show's run did I ever consider the race of his character, or himself as an actor. Some characters are obviously white, some are obviously black, but he was just there, acting without any label assigned by my own mind.
i dont think jullian's race was ever an issue, or non-issue, he was just this Australian guy. However If it was, surely it would be over shadowed by sisko.
I can't believe Dr Bashir had a difficult time getting women on this show.. my god I would have been waiting in the sonic shower for him................... ;-)
Garak was the spice of the show representing the darkness, where as Bashir was sort of a hinge for other players to work with. Goes to show how giving, as an actor, Alexander Faddil, is being the straight man for Miles O'Brien, Garak, Quark...without him and the writers who wrote Bashir to be this central player for the B stories and sometimes the a stories, the show would not have been as good.
@MaltaSoronn too many reasons to list here but in short: very good actor, mysterious and multi dimensional character, and incredibly funny and entertaining
