yeah this is 3d alright, that being said, with a bit of effort and shatter to create 3d extrusions behind text something very similar could be created using afx.

It was added way before evolution came out. Looks very similar but they aren't taken from it.
The 3D looks more than after effects can do. I think this is probably done using Maya or Max, maybe AE as well.
