  • Just Wonderfull!!

  • Stupendo!

  • better her to be a clown than a singer

  • Terrible.

  • Finally the version performed by Cathy Berberian became available. I also found the soundtrack of the origianl song (not the Berio version) performed by Beybudov.

  • aserbaijan

  • But this is not Azerbaijan lang...

  • полная пораша!

начиная того что Азербайджан написали неправильно кончая того что поют хрен знаеш на каком языке, то на русском то на Азери, то вообще непонятно....

да и рожа у певицы как у дауна......

  • Amazing!

  • If you like this song you may also watch

  • you sound dork

  • The content of the song does not justify the execution. The lyrical part(the main part)of the azerbaijanian song is missing completely. This song was transformed into grotesque march. However, the actress is very talented and her vocals are fantastic.

  • Can you tell me what this song is about? It is practically impossible to find a translation. I'm doing Berio Folk Songs soon, and would love to give it the justice it deserves.

  • they did point out that this is not the rendition of the original love song( I am familiar with Behbudov's version). Luciano Berio adopted this tune for the voice of his wife Berberian. And then Salome Kammer adopted that version for her voice. in the end we have only the theme or the main melody left.

  • I dont speak Azeri but I went thru original lyrics and didnt find the last russian lines.I dont know who added those words. Moreover she mispronounces them. I just realized that " vot chto budet ay balam, and then............delim chto to popolam or something like that". There is another version of this song on Utube and again the last lines in Russian are not clear.

  • According to the Wiki article (link in video description) the Russian line is from the record Berberian used to transcribe the song.

  • AND THOSE lines have nothing to do with Azerbaijani love. It says "you wanna know whats gonna happen guy? We are going to devide all the numbers in half". And why did Berberian have to describe the song in Russian if she was an American Armenian. Moreover, the word "balam" (to match with popolam) is an Azeri informal word meaning guy. So those lines were translated by an Azeri into RUssian. The wikipedia information is a total b-t as the entire wikipedia is.

  • I agree with you that Wiki is a mess, but sometimes you can get useful hints. The information about the Berio adaptation of the song is taken from the backsleave of a record - maybe not the most reliable source either, but certainly interesting. Most listeners probably do not even realize that the lyrics in this version are not in the original language. It would be great if new editions would come out with comprehensive explanations and with the original lyrics!

  • No no no, the lyrics is in Azeri language, it is in the original language. And Salome sings in Azeri. Do not trust what some Azeri patriots are writing here. They dont know what they are talking about. Berberian used to be in Armenia many times, she is Armenian, thats why she probably picked up a neighboring Azerbaijani song alongside with armenian lusin yelav for her album. Only 8 lines in the lyrics placed in your info are in Russian

  • As to the Russian line - I don't think Berberian and Berio had anything to do with this. They had this old record from Azerbaidjan, presumably from the thirties or forties, when Azerbaidjan was part of the Soviet Union - maybe that's the reason why the last line is in Russian?

  • the 4 line parts starting with "na plitie kouvshin s vodoi" i "nie didj dom ik diridit" are in Russian, although with lots of mistakes and strange words I guess. For example the last 2 lines can only be "vot chto budet ai Balam, vsyo ravno dehleem chislah snovah papalam". A "na pleeteh kouvshin s vodoi (vuh-doi)" means there is a vase filled up with water on the oven or stove". I can not find any original lyrics in Azeri sites that contain those Russian words so I can figure out the real words

  • yeah i aGREE with you but no Azeri source brings the lyrics with those Russian words. I am suspicious that one of the performers, world known Rashid Behbudov who used to live and sing in Armenia added these comic funny words to tell the Armenian and the entire soviet audience what the song was about. And Berberian got them when she was in her fatherland Armenia.just a version. The Italian singer,Salome and your lyrics do not pronounce or present proper Russian words. We have to guess.

  • and the article in wiki is a total mess. Whoever posted the information asked if any native English speaker could correct the language of the article......

  • nahhh.. original is much better.. it doesnt fit the soul.. thx for the effort though!

  • The music should be performed in its original language - AZERBAIJANI !!!

  • Actually, there are many very popular recorded versions of this song in Azeri and Turkish, some of them I find very beautiful.

  • what languge do u think Salome kammer was performing in???

  • It is non-SENSE!!! Why this rendition is even performed???

Would they like it, if Azerbaijanis got GOETHE and made shit, non-sensical words, out his poetry?

    SHAME!!!

  • I agree it is kind of weird, maybe they do it as a tribute to Luciano Berio and the very different conditions in the olden times when the arrangement was made?

  • In that case Muslim Magomayev shouldnt sing Feelings or Napolitan songs coz the Italians or the English do not make shit from your songs

  • Do not be so Jealous. Some day (MAYBE) in Armenia you will also have such an Artist as Magomayev. Though, I have substantial doubts about that.

  • We are not discussing Magomayev here. U accused the singer of not singing in the original language. I asked you to tell us what language is this then??? Do not distruct our attention or the topic to the point who is good and who is bad.

  • I have not accused the SINGER. Read carefully. I expressed my disapprobation about Luciano Berio, who really made a shit. Thanks GOD Berio had not rendered melody - it overlaps with original. However, the verbal part is SHIT (and I insist on it).

  • What an idiot!!! Listen, dumbass, Luciano Berio is a composer. He didnt do anything to the "verbal part" of the song. He didnt "rendered" the melody either. He just adopted or arranged the song for cathy berberian. The lyrics and the tune is the same and this is in Azeri language. If u wanted the German singer to sing the song without any accent or in perfect Azeri then, sorry, you have high expectations. U live in Austrailia but you can not speak English. Why should Salome know your language?

  • First of all, don't disgrace yourself by repeating so many times "idiot". Everybody now sees from the posted comments who is who in this discussion... Second, I do not hear in Berio's "arrangement" (no matter how we put it, "rendition", arrangement, interpretation, etc.) any trace of Azerbaijani.

If you argue that Salome sings in Azeri (albeit with accent) - YOU ARE WRONG!!! The verbal part is NOT Azeri (and I know it better than you). And this is the CRUX of my discontent with rendition.

  • Kız belin incedir oy ince

    Leblerin goncadır oy gonca

What language is this?? I dont speak Azeri but I know much better that this is your mother tongue. Or san ordan chaxman burdan is not Azeri?? Cholax is not Azeri?

  • Yes, these words are from original Azerbaijani version. BUT once again, the pile of words in Azerbaijani, with pile of words in Russian, and pile of UNKNOWN words does NOT still make it Azerbaijani language(this is per ur question "what languge do u think Salome kammer was performing in?").This rendition is neither in Azeri, nor Russian...simple PILE of words, rubbish. The beauty of every piece is a harmony between words and melody. This rendition lacks one this harmony.

  • So we already decoded 70 per cent of the lyrics. For the rest we have to acknowledge that Berio and Berberian made up words when listening to original Azeri recording. They tried to translate their acustic perceptions into lyrics. As a matter of fact somebody added rUSSIAN words "Vot chto budet ay balam" which means that that person was somehow related to Azerbaijan or turkic word, coz no RUssian would use Balam in his speech. Only pple who know Azeri folk wd say something like that in Russia.

  • I see absolutely NO reason why somebody (be it Berio, Berberian, or unknown Knower of Azeri folk)should "make up words when listening to original Azeri recording". NO Reason. Intelligent people do NOT "make up words" from original Italian, English or other version. They sing it with original words. This is my first encounter with this kind of barbarism of changing the words... So, whoever did this "making up" produced a Non-sense.

  • yeah but what if they dont understand the words when listening to original recording. They just write out whatever resembles the original words. I can imagine how the Chinese would have fun if they record a song and make you write the words for them. Of course u wont be able to do it.

  • It is NOT important whether they understand Azerbaijani or not. What they did is BARBARISM.

Nobody pushes them to "work" with music that they do NOT understand... And there are many other ways to work with words that you do NOT understand (1.Appeal to orginal version; 2.Appeal to musicologists and linguists; etc. etc.). But changing words on own discretion is BARBARISM.

  • When Berio and Berberian adapted this song in the early sixties they may not have had the resources to find out more about it. So they "sampled" the tune and even rendered the lyrics as best as they could. Can't you see anything positive in this? I think they made the this song popular with an audience that most likely would never have had the chance to listen to it in any other way.

  • I already expressed opinion about the ways of dealing with Uknown words. And yup, I do NOT see anything positive in this "rendition" - because it damages TRUE meaning of the song. It is lost in this rendition - simple melody on naked carcass.

In this context, popularization does not justify maiming of the song.

If "rendering" songs this way is OK, then please show me some truly pleasant result of such rendition. Do you have precedents, when highly respected artist does the same?

  • I think it is quite common for vocalists to use phonetic transcripts when they are singing in a language they don't understand. OTOH, when I hear an American opera singer delivering an Italian aria or the Schumann Lieder with a heavy American accent, I have to admit it makes me cringe. So, in a way, I hear you. But for American listeners it won't make any difference at all, don't you think?

  • I can imagine.

  • Correct, this is what I am trying to prove.

  • I would not second-guess, and go around with "what if?" question. I am discontent with the RESULT of their work. The reasons why they did it is not important in this context - it is a matter of their conscience.

  • Take it easy for God's sake. I told u, u have to be grateful for what these artists did to your folk song. Not only Berio and Berberian, but also Salome Kemmer did popularize this song all over the world. And, yes, you must see the positive in this phenomenon. Salome sings this sooooo good, this performance is so brilliant that you have to forget about a "couple of words" that did not coincide with the original lyrics.

  • Here we discussed the quality that music takes after rendition. Arguments pro and contra have been raised.

Now, all you can come up with is popularization. I repeat this personally for you once again I do NOT GIVE A FUCK about popularization of this song around. Popularization does NOT justify changing the song in any way whatsoever.

  • Your reply is now NOT an argument it is an order. If you have any further arguments then go ahead and state them. Otherwise, Do NOT order me what to feel and how to approach this piece of shit. Just, shut up!!!

The final conclusion the Rendition of the beautiful song is SHIT.

  • Song can be popularized without inflicting damage on the content. Otherwise, all the popular songs in this world would have incomprehensible core and a pile of words from several languages... Your argument is rubbish.

  • No offense, but the real pile of words is your English. You think Russian and then translate every sentence of your Russian thoughts word by word into English. As a matter of fact no native speaker of English would ever understand what you mean. I translate your sentences back into Russian, and only after that, I can get the real insight of your sentences. Instead of making this big fuss from nothing why dont you give us links to sites where we can listen to the Azeri interpretation of the song.

  • I feel pity for you you are so used to Glendale-ized that have no idea about intelligent English. BROW DOWN ))

Anyways, let native speakers judge smbds proficiency. Youre NOT an authority in this issue either.

The original name of the song is Bu gün ayın üçüdür.The best version of the song is performed by Azerin. This version is not on Youtube. In case somebody interested in original version, write me a personal message with ur email I will forward the piece in Mp3 format.

  • I have never been to California. How come Azerin, who became a singer only yesterday, could be the best performer of the song? How old are you?? Seems to me you are not familiat with the older generation of Azerbaijani stars.

  • There are older versions of the song (by Reshid Beybutov, Bul-Bul, Shovket Elekberova). But the best performance is by Azerin.

  • Please, send me the original version in mp3 I love this song and I want to know the real pronunciation.

    thanks

  • @australia77777 finally azeri version became available sung by Behbudov. And of course the brilliant performance of Cathy Berberian also was uploaded in youtube. Cathy pronounces the words especially in Russian more clearly.

  • So Stop BS-ting about the language that you do not have even the slightest clue.

  • More than that. In order for it to qualify as Azeri, it does NOT only have some Azeri words (yar, burdan), but it has to have some MEANING in Azeri (which is not the case here). According to your logic, we can qualify this song as 100% Russian (because it happen to have words "snova", "popolam", "zaxodit").

So your logic is misleading... Time to practice in argumentation...

Sadis', Xachaturyan. Segodnya poluchayesh za urok "dvoyku".

  • Da dva kupleta na russkom.U can not argue about that.

  • And about making shit from songs, FYI this is so fat the best performance of the song among all the artists. She is not only good, she is perfect.

  • Yes, her vocal is perfect. Imagine how beautiful she might sound if she performs the piece with not a simple pile of nonsensical words, but in Azerbaijani or Russian, which invest meaning into sounds.

  • Well we asked u to tell u which lang is this and u didnt respond. Instead u repeat the same shit on and on

  • )))

to me it is Marsian language. Now tell me you, shithead, what language it is according to you?

  • to you it can be any language for us it is Azeri, you moron

  • Hahaha ))) You dare to tell me that it is Azeri??? How many words do you know in Azerbaijani? Maybe you are a native speaker?

What gives you a reason to qualify the words of this particular version of the melody as Azeri?

  • @australia77777

    watch?v=MkCjr_X2Ldw

  • @australia77777 on the video that I refered to the user siberian claims that on the disk given as a present to her by the Behbudov familiy the song is called "Shushinets" v perevode Galali. Ne ponimaiu kak Shushinets stal "Galali" Whoever, You can listen to the original version you liked so much. Cathy berberian is brilliant in singing Berio's version.

  • @arakhachatran Azerbaijanci kotorie zhili v Karabaxe i po blizosti, Shushu nazivali Gala - Krepost. :) Naprimer moya babushka do six por tak i nazivaet. A "Галалы" - zovut togo kto zhivet v kreposti. Napr., Bakinec - Bakili, Shekinec - Shekili i t d... :)

  • Fantastic German actress. I love Edgar Reitz' work!

  • Interprétation incroyablement habitée. magnifique artiste. Bravo

  • aydaaa, heyif mahnimizdan...
