The Michigan fan looks at the Ohio Statefan and says"We're going to beat you"the Ohio State fan holds up the Michigan flag that has the big "M"on it turns it up side down and says Wichigan(wish again)...
I was a Junior at UM then. I still see some of the players of the era from time to time. Stan Edwards coaches youth track and I'm a photographer that shoots running. I was also at that last pep rally in October 1981. The other speaker there was Ron Kramer, who just died in the last month. When Ron played for the Lions he used to come over to our house and carry me on his shoulders. I also know Ufer's daughter. Needless to say I get a little emotional when I listen to these old play by plays.
Wow, I saw the comment about Ufer's passing and how old you were and I had to verify. I watch these videos all the time. The whole time I am thinking you are like 60 or something. I don't know if it's the name or your knowledge of UM football that threw me off. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting. OSU returned a bucketload of defensive and offensive starters from their 1979 11-1-0 Big Ten championship team. I think 1980 was the first season ever that both OSU and Michigan won their respective bowl games.
I believe it was the Iowa game the next season. But Ufer was too weak to finish the game, I think. The marching band spelled out UFER on the field and he addressed the fans over the stadium speakers one final time. I think he knew he had very few days left.
1981 was Frank Beckman's first season in the booth. He broadcast the smack down of Notre Dame and then handed the microphone over to Ufer during the final minute so he could count down the final seconds. Classy guy.
Correct- the Iowa game next year was the last one he called, I was in the MMB when we spelled out UFER. About this game, the band had to leave the Ohio stadium with something like 6-7 minutes left in the game, and we were going absolutely nuts trying to find out if we had held on to win....
More likely to get a head start on the long drive back to Ann Arbor, made much shorter by the fact that we won and were going to Pasadena. Back when I was in the band, both trips to Columbus were victories (78 and 80) and the OSU fans were actually pretty nice back then- as we were leaving they said "good luck in Pasadena!"
The very last game that Bob broadcasted was the 1981 Iowa game. Sad to say the Maize and Blue lost 9-7. But, the halftime show will be remember by all real MEEEEEECHIGAN men the world over.
After shutouts in the last 3 games, they allowed the buckeyes only 3 points, and in the Rose Bow 6 for Washington. 22 strait quarters allowing no touchdowns.
My parents were at this game and my mom was about 8 months prego w/me. always considered this my first M vs. tosu game. got to see pictures my dad took but never saw game footage. Priceless, simply priceless.
OSU lines up in the power I on 4th and 25 with 30secs left. wow.

Easily my favorite UM team. I could name thirty players from that team alone who contributed to that season.

I get that alot. Many people usually think I'm 60 or 70.
I've read nearly every book ever written about Michigan football. So I know pretty much all the stories from games and the program before I was born.

Ohio State fans turned the water off to the Michigan Hotel. Needless to say Michigan was charged up.

I sure wish I could have been alive to hear a live broadcast. That would have been so rad.

Yeah, I was only a year old when he died so I never got to hear a live broadcast either.

That's ridiculous. Why didn't you guys stay until the end?
Probably to avoid the wrath of those insane OSU fans.
