my dads father would only speak Norwegian to him and he has been talking it since he was old enough to talk now hes 70 years old and still talks to too ever can speak norwegian. and our last name is ostby
Thanks for the comment on Roger speaking Norwegian at 95. He did have an amazing memory! You wouldn't live near Stavangaar would you? I'm trying to find someone to take a picture of a family wedding crown in the museum there. Thanks! Hilda Ostby
@SecurityCorinth Hallo. I'm not trying to be a creepy youtube stalker, but I noticed in your comment that you are living in Trondheim. That is where my grandmother's parents came from. We also have family in Singsås. Ever heard of it? (I'm yet to find a Norwegian who has.) lol :)
@pinds83 Hello Pinds. Yes i've heard of Singsås, i can understand that most people haven't heard of it as it is s a very small town/place. And it's probably not a place you go to unless you go there on a fishing trip(Gaula) or hiking. But when i was studying i was working on the side as a truckdriver and that brought me to Singsås twice.
good happy b-day I am 17 from norway I living in oslo now my father are from norway and my mom is from dominican rep. and hahha the best of all my name is Roger to jeah have a nice day ROGER
You can say the numbers both in the "norwegian" and the "english" way, it depends on where in the country you are. In Oslo (the capital), they say nitti-fem (ninety-five), but in Trondheim they say fem-og-nitti (five and ninety).
@izte Thanks for the nice comment on Roger speaking Norwegian on his 95th birthday. I believe that in the museum in Trondheim there is a wedding crown that belonged to his wife's grandmother. I'll need to check her writings. If so I'd love to have a photo of that.
@izte Hello - I had incorrect information about the wedding crown. My husband's great-grandmother, Alette Moltevedt, and her husband, John Orten sold her wedding crown to get money to come to America in 1887. It's now in the museum in Stavangar. If anyone can get me a picture of it I would be so happy!
Great to see this. My father also grew up speaking Norwegian, and when he visited me in Norway it came back to him in short order. Growing up I heard the language all over my home town, but there are not many left of us who speak it in this country. Tusen takk!
It's not quite right saying that we say numbers the other way around. It can be said like that, but the "official" way is saying it exactly like in English (just with Norwegian words of course).
For seint ute, men gratulerar så mykje med 95 års dagen, Roger! Helsing Magnus.
Imponerande at du faktisk fortsatt pratar med ei svært forståeleg Vestlandsdialekt !
Ein kan høyre at du har budd alt for lenge i USA, men verkeleg, eg er imponert! I am too late, but Congratulations with your 95th birthday, Roger.
Impressive that you still are able to speak with a very understandable Western dialect. One can hear that you have spent too much time in the USA, but truly, I am impressed.
He speaks Norwegian very well, where are you guys from?

Actually the older people tend to say the 5 and 90 here in norway :)

Thanks for letting me know that! I'm so thrilled so many people get to 'meet' Roger this way!
wheedance 1 year ago
@girlsaloudgeek that is wrong, not only old people say "fiveandninety" it's really just about what your prefer yourself.
seriall1337 1 year ago
I guess Roger qualified as old!
wheedance 1 year ago
The only people who say "five and ninety" in norway are old people....most of the population says ninetyfive, just like in the US :)
GirlsAloudGeek 1 year ago
Det er bare å håpe at man husker like godt som Roger når man er fem og nitti!
One can only hope to have as good a memory as Roger when you're 95!
And yes, most poeple in norway speak two or more languages, usually the scandinavian ones, english and then some german, french or spanish.

I just saw your note and thanks for leaving it. Roger passed away last July so we're happy to have these memories of him.
wheedance 2 years ago
Aye, that's true.
However in the times of Dickens etc, they used "5 and 90" so it's more of a recent english thing.
Armandess 2 years ago
You actually say the numbers the "english way" now. They changed it! Nittifem is right, fem og nitti is also right, but the "old" way of saying it.
