If you listen to Master's Apprentice, Wreath etc you can clearly tell it's artifical sounding. This is the only Opeth album where it's notable and that's probably because even Mendez himself got tired. My guess is it was Steven WIlson's idea. It's hard to play that many BPMs clean without triggers or midi....

This is about as fast as it gets and it's only on a few songs, really only on the deliverence album. A lot of bands use studio tricks. I happened to meet Axe (drummer here) in person after a show and we talked for about 30 min. He is a very nervous/shy guy. He probably was nervous in front of wakken crowd.
