Pavarotti was indeed a fabulous singer. In concert, with his little white hankie, he was the best. But on the operatic stage, it was another story. He never deigned to get in character--you can see it clearly in this video, which is simply Pav in concert but in costume. Domingo was last century's king of tenors: voice equal to Pav's, always in character, flawless musicianship. And yes, I saw both of them several times live in operatic roles, not to mention simulcasts (remember those?)
I have to give you reason...Pavarotti is much better than Domingo, who is an historically overestimated tenor....but on the other hand I have to admit: Opera means MELODRAMMA (MELOS means THEATER)....Pavarotti was vocally and technically very good but was neve a complete OPERA SINGER. In terms of acting and LIBRETTO-singing and in terms of capability of RECITAR CANTANDO he was one of the worst opera singers in the world...and of every time!
@Neoboethius- I cannot agree with you about Pav's acting. Look in his eyes; that's where the acting is taking place. And for grand stage work acting, check out the clip of Pav in final seen from Pagliacci that is on youtube Luciano bursts with emotion in this clip. His madness is truly frightening. If he appeared clumsy in some roles I imagine what may have hindered him was his size. It's very unfortunate he allowed himself to get so big. Made him less romantic and mobile.
@Neoboethius - part II :) -- Domingo also starred in this same prod. of Pagliacci (clip also on youtube) and one night he tripped on a chair -- and never missed a beat! Kept singing perfectly as he fell, like the pro he is. I prefer Pav. to Domingo, but I concur that he is a flawless musician and a heroic presence. I just find his high notes tight and somewhat lacking, and I prefer a warmer color.
@fabriou Good point. I should have said something like "last half of the 20th century" or better yet, "last 40 years--which is about the time I've been an opera buff. And I don't think Carreras is in the same league, by the way.
Looks like they're still using the same set in Vienna...
