Some of the French Supreme leaders just couldn't seem to fathom that enough, if not more than enough, mobile reserves are practically a necessity in a large-scale conflict, especially when fighting on the defensive (as the Western Allies had strongly established very largely on purpose). That, and, in conjunction, especially when quite purposely fighting on the defensive, there very well may not be any areas that are to be "out of bounds" in actuality (i.e. massed armour through the Ardennes).
