  • ray at his best

  • were supose to be the pillers of the comunity coy 4;36 lol

  • The Wikipedia page for Hahira, Georgia singles out this song among "several songs by comedian/songwriter Ray Stevens" for mentioning the town. I can't for the life of me think of another song, by Ray or anybody else for that matter, where the name appears.

  • @dadoctah: Ray mentions Hahira, Georgia in the song "Erik the Awful" from 1984. In the 1986 recording "Southern Air" Ray mentions that the flight he's on is going from Hahira, Georgia to Yazoo City, Mississippi.

The Yazoo connection was did by design because Jerry Clower appeared on the recording as the pilot of the airplane. (Jerry lived in Yazoo City for decades).

Ray plays the part of the passenger and Minnie Pearl is the stewardess.

You can find that song on You Tube.

  • i want to be a shriner too but only if i can be coy

  • right smack in the middle of the sherbert? man I gotta join the shrine. hehehehe.

  • My father is a freemason and a shriner and he loves this song XD

  • I never get tired of watching this. Ray, Freemasonry and Shriner's Rock!

  • I remember listening to Ray Stevens when I was younger and I always loved his stuff. It wasn't until after being a Shriner's Lady and experiencing several Shriner's Conventions first hand, that I realized how right on this song is. Those Shriner's sure know how to have a good time, but they are even better at helping crippled kids and their families!

  • Shrine is considered the playground of Masonry. Blue Lodge takes a pledge against intemperance, etc, but an unusually visible minority among the Shriners seem to have forgotten they are Freemasons. Most of us really DO strive to be pillars of the community, hokey as it sounds.

BTW, yes, I AM a Shriner (which also means I am a Mason). In Masonry, as in all other things, the scum settles to the bottom. Most Shriners are quite responsible. Sadly, some are not.

  • He actually tamed it down a tiny bit for this video. In the original recording he says "I just hope Charlene doesn't find out about this", implying that Coy is cheating on his wife/girlfriend with the little redhead.

  • I love how he says "pillars of the community" I find myself repeating that from time to time.

  • My Dad is a Shriner, and was in the Corvair unit , I was always so happy and proud to see him come driving down the parade route :-)

  • Always liked this song but hadn't seen the video until now. Well-done

  • ray donated the proceeeds from this song to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children

  • There is a version he made where he makes the comment (about the redhead) ... "it don't make no difference if she was sent over from the Knights of Columbus!" I have that version on my IPod! Keep up the great work. Would love to see Dudely Doo-Right of the Highway patrol as a video.

  • @hqfedlegion: Ray did a music video of "Dudley Dorite of The Highway Patrol" and it's on his 1995 direct-to-home video movie, GET SERIOUS. This movie is also where this "Shriner's Convention" music video comes from. The writer of "Dudley Dorite", Buddy Kalb, plays the character in the movie. Of course, as of now, Ray hasn't uploaded the "Dudley Dorite" video onto You Tube...but check eBay for copies of GET SERIOUS if you want to see the official music video of that song.

  • @hqfedlegion: For GET SERIOUS, Ray made the following 10 music videos: "Gitarzan", "Woogie Boogie", "Shriner's Convention", "Dudley Dorite", "We Don't Take Nuthin' Off Nobody", "The Dooright Family", "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", "Can He Love You Half as Much as I?", "I Used to Be Crazy", and "Ahab the Arab".

  • Such a funny video. "Well how did you get that dern motorcycle up there on the high-dive?" Best lyrics ever.

  • Proud to be a Christian Shriner!

  • Yep! We Freemasons like to have fun now and then, we just keep it within due bounds!

  • The Shriners: toying with our banking systems, controling the worlds governments, and single-handedly keeping the fez industry aloft.

  • Made the mistake of being a Myrtle Beach during a Shriners Convention in the 70's and they acted just like this too

  • You don'[t hang up on the Illustrious Potentate. Good to know that the Shriners have a sense of humor. After all, you can't have a real convention without near naked waitresses wearing nothin' but fezs on their heads who know all the secret codes.

  • thats a classic

  • when i was little my dad had this on cassett tape and we'd listin to it all day in the car. me and my little brother would be laughin our asses off!!!

  • Prior to making this video, Ray travelled to Florida and met with our Imperial Potentate who gave his special permission for Ray to make this video! Smart move!

  • thats my shrine pipe band lol

  • to be a shriner one must first be a freemason. no ray stevens is not a shriner but sais he holds the highest respect for this order. and oh by the way the only way to become a freemason is to ask one or email the state "Grand Lodge Secretary"

  • this was the very first ray stevens song my dad heard and I think its good too

  • I always enjoyed the first 45 seconds of the song before it kinda fell apart into craziness. Nothin wrong with it, just think it could have been a credible song.

  • @gumper1986 although the point of it was to be wild and silly. I love classic stevens songs they make me giggle

  • I remember this playing at my grandparents' house when I was younger.

  • I first heard this song in the 70's... opps. now that's a long time ago. A friends and I used to see the Shriners driving those tiny motorbikes around town on special occasions. The line with Coy on the diving board in his fruit of the looms was a hoot then and still is!

  • My now deceased paw paw was a Shriner. We still have his hat too.

  • This one makes me laugh so hard because my Dad is a Shriner and so much in true :p

  • hilarious music video and song!

  • @ACcountryFan Awe wow I remember when I was a kid I heard this I laughed so hard.

  • @20lbsledge: I first heard this song when I was a kid as well. My grandfather had a couple of Ray Stevens cassette tapes. One of them was "Greatest Hits" on the MCA label in 1987 and this song was track two on the album. It's origins go back to late 1979...it was a single very early in 1980...his debut on the RCA label. The single reached the country Top-10 as did the album of the same name. Thanks to my grandparent's I became aware of Ray Stevens and am a huge fan of his.
