@Mandy I work in ultrasound, sorry to say but you are wrong. The sex organs are forming. And usually by 14 weeks it is easier to be accurate. Im pro choice. Either way you cannot call this an "it". It is an alive baby. I have 5 children so dont even think I have no clue what im talking about.

At the end of the first trimester/beginning of first trimester the genitals are starting to form and a guess at gender is only about 75% accurate at best. I tthink you guys are straying off the point I was making which is - the scan above is of a pregnancy more advanced than 13 weeks, the advanced development of the genitals is one clear indicator. It's also disturbing that the poster felt the need to repeatedly refer to her son's 'big penis'.

@msafoster I was 12weeks 5 days so pretty much 13 weeks and I had an internal scan due to some spotting so she got a really good look at it and told me even at this stage a girl doesn't stick off as much as we saw.

i had an ultrasound at 12 weeks 5 days and my tech was 99.99% that im having a boy.. i wont know 100% until november but my scan looked VERY similar to this.. idk why there is any question if this is a 13 week scan or not.

@ashleykt09 at the very best, a very experienced tech could only give you a 75% educated guess at 12 weeks as the genitals are only JUST starting to form to the point of visibility on a scan. This foetus is more developed than 13 weeks.

You are wrong. 13 week scan looks just like this! Read a pregnancy book. Babies are fully formed by 12 weeks. Their intestines are out of place and they still have a lot of growing to do, but their bodies are indeed fully formed!

@mandyb83 Thanks for your suggestion but I already know what scans look like in different stages of pregnancy and I'm afraid you're misinformed if you think this is a scan of a 13 week old foetus. At 13 weeks, they can't give you an educated guess on gender as genitals don't start developing in to male/female forms until 14 weeks plus. This is a disingenuous pro-life trick of pretending a scan of a more advanced pregnancy is one of a pregnancy in a much earlier stage. It's such a shame.

@TheQueenSherwood Where exactly have you got this incorrect info from? I hope for your sake that you're trolling here rather than just staggeringly ignorant. Genitalia looks exactly the same on a male or female foetus until the second trimester then begins to take on a more obvious male or female form. If you're lucky, the external changes will be developed enough for a trained sonographer to be able to give you an educated guess at 16 weeks plus but even then its not 100% accurate.

@MsAfoster1 I actually am around 14 weeks and had a scan at 13 weeks because of a possibility of twins. This scan is just like what we saw and they 'guessed' that it was a boy because of a little 'blip' down there. So they can give you an educated guess - they start forming in the first trimester, but it is just that, a guess.

@MsAfoster1 Actually my son was told to in fact be a boy at 13 weeks, 2 days. We weren't looking for gender during this ultrasound, but he happened to be in the perfect position at the time. My Dr. said that it was rare, but it happens.

@MsAfoster1 completely incorrect. Everyone i know including me were told the sex of the baby at 13+ weeks. They can be wrong. Its not 100%. But it is an educated guess based one many years of experience which is correct in 80-90% of the time. In my life and everyone surrounding me, they were correct 100% of the time.

@isigala Was just wondering why you were having such a detailed scan at this stage? I had my 12 weeks scan the other day and it went so fast, we dont get the 3d scan unless requested I think. My next scan is about 7 weeks time when I will be around 20 weeks where they will be able to tell me the sex. Cant wait.

@lyndsey5235 we paid 3 years ago 70€ for each scan and that was just because the doctor was friend of family , i do not know how much they wil charge this days. About sex i can tell you that depends on the position of the baby , we were advised to take some cofee and to walk hands and feet like a cat for 10 minutes in the clinic in order to wake up the baby and make him move. Are you saying that it is possible to tell the sex at 9 weeks?! craziseximami is correct in saying it's impossible! At this stage it is still an embryo and although the necessary organs to determine the sex may have started to develop, here is no difference in the way they look. So it doesn't matter how skilled you are, you ain't gonna be able to tell!

Also, that is definitely a boy. There is a lot of research now showing sex can be determined from 12-14 with high accuracy. People who claim it cannot be told this early do not know enough about anatomical development or they haven't read the latest research. However, only trust a tech if you see what they are saying...ultrasound pics which determine gender are not hard to interpret. I think people who can't lack perceptual ability I guess...

You can't know with certainty with only a scan at 12 weeks.

The external sex organs are only developed during the 13th week and even then they are hard to detect until later.

If you did CVS screening they can tell with 100% certainty from the DNA in the sample. But it is a risky procedure for the baby.

Maybe your baby is unusually large in that department.
