It reminds me of junior high school dances where the white kids were on one side of the gym and the black kids were on the other with few exceptions The difference in dancing was much more noticable than it is today I don't know the reason exactly but most white kids had no rhythem I was white and I loved black musci but many white kids dismissed it as nigger music this was in NY in the very early 60s Winds of Change
" Hip shakin' mama" .....seriously.....how bad was this mother fucker right here? Otis was, and is, the man! Him, Sam Cooke, Marvin, Al Green.....no one today can bring it like those guys!
@Berlon This stereotype only exists in America. In the UK we have tons of white soul singers and there's no racial divide in music. Blacks sing in all white rock bands(Noisettes), and whites sing soul with black backing singers(Winehouse) - Should be the same here, support peoples talent rather than damning it. Not like people in the UK are a different species. Check out Jamiroquai and tell me whites are off beat.
@Veyro I'm not saying all white people have no rhythm. But if you watch the video, and look at the audience during those parts, just about every single one is clapping off beat.
I would gladly support people's talent if they have it. But the audience members clapping off beat don't have talent. Chill out Dr. King.
@Berlon I was mostly responding to 'Thanks for repping white people well!' and I'm not annoyed at what you said, just responding with accuracy. You don't often hear people saying that whites have no rhythm in the UK but you hear it all the time here in the US. It's to do with an attitude, rather than genes aye?
@Berlon well at least white people went out to support him, maybe thats why he was voted male rock vocalist over elvis during that time period. rather than make fun of peoples rhythm, look at the bigger picture, black people, support your black artist, by the way, im an artist, and im black.

The music of all cultures originates in oral tradition, ths rhythms, melodies and lyrical poems are passed on by word of mouth. It's up to the youth to take these elements and to interpret them contemporarily. What we're force fed through the TV etc today is no different to the black American entrepaneurs of the 50s and 60s. You just have to look around for the kids with soul, seek and ye shall find. It's not taboo to go back if you foget.
the thing about music these days ( rapping Ect ... ) has no real theme and livliness as this, i h8 rapping all ma m8s are lovein it ..but this is the true music
Nice tune but doesn't really compare to the single - Otis makes the same mistake a lot of 60s pop acts did in trying to speed up the tempo when playing live.
@AllBobsAllTheTime Interesting... it may have been an issue with the way they were recorded...if you pick up the 25th anniversary version of The Kids are Alright, one of the big changes was that they remastered some of the old TV appearances to correct for this. Just like here, it isnt off enough to sound HORRIBLE but when you compare them side by side (as they do in the extras) it is very noticable
Loved Otis since I was 13 and when he was only played on black "Soul" stations in NY like WWRL WLIB and WNJR but soon he was all over the radio dial on the NY rock and roll stations I just wish I had seen him I did get to see Wilson Pickett and James Brown We cut school took an express train and 45 minutes later we were in front of the Apollo on 125th st. the audience went crazy even blonde haired blue eyed me
Interesting to watch the audience. Most people were cultured to be reserved instead of cuttin' loose and gettin' down with the tunes. We spectators have lost this refinement...thankfully! Live it...love it!
I remember Otis's plane went down in Dec 1967, Dock of the Bay went to #1 on AM radio.
I went to college down south and Otis, Sam And Dave, Wilson Pickett, James Brown and lesser artist's ruled the air waves and the cover bands of this era played these tunes at fraternity parties all over the south.
