The reason there is only 1 bearing the get off the island is to PROTECT the island from the outside world and prevent bad people from turning the light out. Hyoglifics(red and black symbols) appear when the clock goes past 0:00 and warns that system is failing
the dharma initiative warehouse on mainland was still shipping food to the island(probably because they had no idea they all were dead due to the purge) also if you watched the bonus features of season 6 it shows hurley GOING to that warehouse and telling them to stop. The hatch lockdown was to prevent the person pressing the button going outside during the food drop, the guy before desmond painted that invisible map on the door and manually caused the lockdown the write it.
