  • Sweet Rig - love the lexicon :)

  • i have mesa boogie 50 caliber + that i just cant seem to get enough gain out of it .im not sure what would be the most easyest and wisest way to do it.I use no effects at all the amps got balls to spare just dont want to add effects

  • @screaminguitarman1 Mesa Boogies and in general - all of the really well built/high quality amps...it takes time to find the right sound. I've had a variety of amps and with my (sold) DC 30 Boogie, it seemed like forever to get the sound I like. Just experiment with the E.Q/Tone controls first and don't go full gain.

I think once you find the right amount of bass/treble it will be easier to work with tweaking the distortion. Same deal on clean sound..best of luck.

  • The MXR 74 reissue phase 90 is the identical box he used. It does sound different.

  • I am a doctorate degree nurse practioner, and it is correct to say that your hearing can change from day to day. That could be why what sounds good to you one day, may not sound good the next.

  • Only Eddie Van Halen can sounds like Eddie Van Halen xD

  • what is the thing that holds the picks

  • @andrewragford89 double stick tape...you can also use rolled up masking tape.

  • If running efx st8 into the amp is good enuff 4 Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc...Then it's PLENTY good enuff 4 me...

  • i think eddie really used the eq for his sound on vh 2, its thicker and not as sharp, i would think this is more eddie sound,

  • @vanhalen515084 im pretty sure in his earlier rig he had a MXR eq. his delay was an echo plex and what not. many of the things he had, it would be very difficult to get nowadays. the reality is, unless youre edward, you wont sound like him. the object of these videos is to help those that are just starting out playing basic effects and amp usage. its no where near the perfect brown sound, but its a starting point.

  • @WillsEasyGuitar great tutorial, you can not stress enough that getting this sound right is in your hands. eddie has this crazy muting thing he does with both hands that really makes his sound unique. but these settings are dead on to start getting this sound...one mistake i see people make is using too much gain....anyway great video.

  • I've always understood that you without an effects loop you chain: OD to Dist. to EQ to Modulating (Phase, Delay etc.) and last Noise supp. Have I been steered wrong? Thanks

  • @ThePigonSkates it kind of depends on your gear. sometimes the nosie gate is right after the guitar, sometimes its after certain effects athat are really noisy. you kind of have to experiment on what you think is best for your particular gear. ive used things that sounded better in different locations within the chain, and some that only worked well with particular amps or guitars. try not to get into the habit of only thinking there is only one way to do things.

  • 1ONe thing that changes from day to day is humidity. Humidity affects the composition of speakers because they are made of porous paper. More moisture = more weight and the sound and frequency response changes. This may be why amp settings sound different from day to day,

  • @nncoco not all speakers are paper nowadays, and humidity changes are really dependent upon where you are in the world. i would think the speaker wouldnt be as big of a factor as the air being denser due to the extra moisture. since sound travels in vibrating air, it would make sense that humidty could cause sound flucuations from day to day, or location. most of our hearing though changs due to the chemistry within our ears and brain. hearing is alot like or other senses like smell and taste.

  • what settings do you use for your amp? That's what I want to know.

  • @drledsabbath look at part 2

  • @WillsEasyGuitar Alright, thanks.

  • @WillsEasyGuitar This may be a stupid question but which head do you prefer overall. the jsx or the 5150? Great videos btw.

  • @18266609 the JSX by far is a better and more versatile amp.

  • Aren't you supposed to put the noise gate in the effects loop

  • @SavageDutchman it depends on what noise youre trying to get rid of. most of my effects before in the input cause the noise, so i use it before. anything within the effects loop that causes noise, you would put it there. sometimes, depending on the amp, effects loops are horrible and everything has to be used before the input. i would say it would really depend on your equiptment.

  • Didn't EVH use the EQ band? What setting did he use on it?

  • on the amp whats that evh button?

  • @LOMAZ5150 there isnt one. the only buttons are on/off, standby, channel, and rhythm (bright / crunch). i think what your seeing is the LEDs.

  • @WillsEasyGuitar oh i thought i see a mark that says evh thought it was a button

  • ARE YOU JUST IDIOT????!!!!! THERE IS NOTHING THAT COULD BE USED TO SOUND LIKE EVH!!!!!!!

  • @MrMETALBeST "ARE YOU JUST IDIOT????!!!!! " why, are you looking for your long lost twin? besides, what the fuck do you know? If you knew so much, why are you watching my videos? I'll tell you why, because you cant play shit, youre a punk ass whimp, you have no talents other than sucking homeless peoples cocks, and your mother is a crack whore who gave birth to a turd with eyes. fuck you and everyone that looks like you. youre a cowardly cunt and dont know shit. p.s. save the whales.

  • @WillsEasyGuitar lol that told him

  • If I could ask, what is the purpose of the quarter that's screwed to the body of the Frankenstein guitar? I've heard it has something to to with the tremolo system, but it doesn't seem to be touching the tremolo. Why did Eddie put that on there?

  • @HearingLossProvider it was used as a trem stop back in the day. his first trem wasnt a locking trem, but a strat type trem. the quarter prevented the trem from going back to far and going sharp. eddie has really only done dives with his rig and never pulls back on the trem. the locking floyd fixed this situation and he didnt need the quarter anymore, but just moved it off to the side.

  • This guy has his ducks in a row w an expensive rig, but, duncan mod PUs for eddie, the 78's r kind of close but r not the ones Eddie actually used. Duncan now makes the EVH frankentein with Eddies original specs, never available before. Right out of the box it nails the "brown sound" with none of those elaborate expensive effects, all you need is reverb and phase 90. Besides, almost all of eddie's effects were added "post production" so its almost impossible to replicate them on the fly.

  • Maybe i overlooked it, but what are you using for your distortion? Amp or the Fulltone OCD? Also, is your Phase 90 vintage? What do you think about the re-issue Phase 90s?

  • @ksmons i used the amp for the distortion and im using a phase 90 thats about 8 years old.

  • @minpinful i bought that years ago and since i only use this set up for fooling around in my studio, i felt theres no need to replace it. but i know where youre coming from trust me. maybe i should get a Kraco, Memorex, or Audiovox set of speakers...what do you think?

  • Cant you just put the Phaser in the effects loop or does it have to be straight after the Guitar at the front of the amp?, btw Amazing gear lol

  • @JoeFarmerFarndonJr ive found that to get the phase to sound like his, you have to put it in front. but try it both ways and see the difference.

  • @WillsEasyGuitar Thanks Very Much

  • Holy shit bro...a 5150 on top of a jsx...you gotta be filthy rich man...Your probably playing with solid gold speakers in your cab

  • @blazehand187 naw, diamond core...actually my speakers are crap, but im planning on getting some good ones some time this year. i use these because im being nice to my neighbors. ive owned other amps, but these are the two i liked. i recently sold the 5150 and my frankenstrat. im trying to simplify my studio.

  • @WillsEasyGuitar haha..i hear you man...but that JSX is very versatile...that should give you most tones you want....Keep making videos man...later

  • Great work! it sound really nice!!

So what kind of overdrive/distortion do you use?

I can't afford all the tuff you've got and i'm looking for a good overdrive/distortion that meet EVH sound with my RG1550 and my Peavey Studio Pro 112.

What do you advise to me?

    Thanks

  • @paveltherocket i would get a gnx4 or the like. it takes more than just distortion. if youre looking for just a overdrive pedal etc, i would look towardsa OCD.

  • I have the same lexicon reverb unit, which reverb setting do you recommend for classic evh I and II sound??

  • @VonHalen7 it changes with what guitar youre using, speakers, and room acoustics. my settings probably wont work for your set up.

  • @VonHalen7 EVH back in the day would record all his guitar parts in a huge hall to get maximum natural sounding reverb. so he would have a "big" sounding guitar it just sounded great eddie was really just an overall pioneer in tone

  • thanks for posting

  • thanks for the help i have been looking for this forever thanks

  • @hhubble97 no prob. i just wish the camera was able to pick up the sound better. i guess its just too loud or too close to the speakers.
