British propaganda movie....why are the British supposed to be the heroes when the Zulus are the ones defending their country? Anyway rourke's drift was only a skirmish that was turned in to a big deal by the limeys to paper over the earlier defeat at Isandhwlana. If you can put this to one side then it is an entertaining action flick just the same, kind of like a Brit version of John Wayne swatting red indians like flies.
johnuk97..in answer 1st the regiment was from warwickshire not Wales, Birmingham City bhave the bad lads known as the zulu warriors who kick ass, hope that answers the question, all brave lads in this battle.
johnuk97..in answer 1st the regiment was from warwickshire not Wales, Birmingham City bhave the bad lads known as the zulu warriors who kick ass, hope that answers the question
@enjoythewildUSA yea, watching this film makes you proud to be british, and considering it was directed by a fellow countryman of yours, he got everything about the brits spot on, this film will stand the test of time
@NewDayStudios I thought they also portrayed the Zulus well. Guts, courage, organization, honor. In the opening scenes the Zulu victory over the larger British force was depicted. The rest of the film to me just shows the gut wrenching struggle between two very committed forces. One of my favorite parts is when the two sides chant and sing to bolster their confidence. It's just a stunning, stunning film.
@enjoythewildUSA yea that goes without saying, the whole film was just superbly done, ...thats one of my fave bits also, i learned to play that men of harlech a couple of days ago :).
@cartoonkingforeever no fun with a gun? You've obviously never gone target shooting, it's one of the most fun thing ever. Guns have way more style, more complexity and are way more varied too, a sword is a just a piece of metal with a handle.
@Elim777 the only time i will use a gun is when a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion happens otherwise i think guns should only be in video games and computer games and nothing more
@Elim777 I've been shooting targets since I was 10; I compete in NRA pistol. In collage I studied both foil fencing and Kendo. I enjoy both blade and bullet.
If you are looking for a good workout, take up the sword. I've never met a shooter yet who lost weight, even on sporting clays.
For the Zen "in the moment," there is nothing like a target competition. I know where my feet, knees, hips and hands are. Exactly. I am controlling my breathing. I don't have that level of awareness even in Kendo.
@theburninguitar This movie may have some racist Language (in accordance with the circumstances and times)
But it was historically accurate. These are real Zulu's not actors. The Zulu chief in the movie is chief Buthelezi, the great grandson of chief Cetshwayo who actually led the Zulu forces against the British army. This movie was made with their blessing and participation
Watch the film before making such a damning judgement
@theburninguitar. You really have no idea, do you? If this situation was on the black persons approach, would people say that is racist , I believe less so. So actually doing some historical research would not go a miss. Read a book or two and before spurting out your views, think about what your saying. I have to admit the Film is not historically 100% accurate but neither was 300 (spartan hold at thermopylae) is this rasict as well as accurate, no.
Very good film--you see things from the British point of view--Zulus fearsome but honorable. Makes a good pair with Shaka Zulu, where you see things from the Zulu point of view, with the Europeans as the 'other.' Fascinating history, honorable adversaries.
I didn't say the British wanted to go to war with the Zulu's. The British sent note to Cetshwayo offering them to be under the rule of the British Empire, because their answer was no, we moved across the natal contingent to Zulu Land, And Lord Chelmsford went to hunt down the Zulu empire. But the Zulu empire found the British first, at the camp of where only 1200 British soldiers where staged (Isandlwana). Lord Chelmsford was not present.
Its not a racist film Rachel, its history and unfortunately in the 1800's Great Britain wanted the Zulu nation to be under the realm of the British Empire, and hey didn't want it. Which is understandable, This film is not on the lins of American History X so that comment was utter stupid.
Best film ever, made me like the Welsh even though in reality most the men were English. And the rachelroxx knows nothing about the film or history. I'd like to see you charged by 4000 Zulus and stand your ground. Plus given how racist South Africa is today towards whites, i don't think that argument's valid, plus the south africans had nothing to do with making the film anyway, apart the zulus who are actual zulus and who are portrayed as extremely brave men.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
um, ive never seen this movie , but it looks like such a huge peice of racist propaganda. I mean really "gallent men"? It was guns against spears OF COURSE guns won. and we all know how racist South Africa was in the 60's
watch the movie before you make such a statment, there are historical inaccuracies but this is basically what happeed at the batlle of Rorkes drift. 150 british soldiers fought off 4000 to 5000 zulu warriors. And the movie dosn't portray the zulu's as savages but in a rather posatve light, all the people who playedthe zulu warriors were zulu in decent . the point wasn't guns vs spears but many vs a few, condisering earlier in the day the zulus destroyed a much bigger britsh regiment.
@TheRachelroxx , the film is about the battle of Rourke's Drift during the beginning of the zulu wars with the british. The day before 1500 English were killed at the battle os Isandlawanda, and the zulus then attack Rourke's Drift, a hospital outpost with around 100 men. They held out for over a day and more Victorian Crosses were issued for their bravery than any other battle. It is more of a historical movie than anything racist. If it was,I doubt the real zulus would not have been in it.
Thank god the Americans didn't make it because somewhere they would of mucked things up. Mucked up Breaveheat. Playing Mel Gibson as a William Wallace. Well done!
Oh and Alexander. Playing Colin Farrell as Alexander the great, He's bloody irish. Another well done.
@rfmgunner , Colin Ferrell is an awful actor and should not have been cast as Alexander. It made the film unbearable. Mel Gibson at least is a decent actor and Braveheart was much better done.
What do people expect form a trailer that was made in 1964 for god sake, get with the times and smell the roses. Don't judge a book by its cover hey. This film is the greatest battle film of all time. Great acting like it should be and no cheesy american rubbish.
@olliemad This is the only movie my dear departed Daddy took me to see, as in just the two of us. His eyes were glued to the screen and I didn't know which fascinated me more -- this movie or my father's (knows best) reaction to it.
not a good trailer but one of the best war movies ever made, real zulus and a good british cast....at one hundred yards independant fire at will....thats very good of him" classic

poor trailer but.... the film is great. romanticised in British attept to save glory and face but... dont get me wrong... it is rebellious in that it does not overrate the David vs Goliath war. based on a TRUE STORY! one of the best war films ever.

MGM wanted the book copyrights to make this film
my uncle joe (who was Louie B Mayers casting director) said that Louie had said to him
" get me Oliver Hardy to play the part of Cetewayo the Zulu chief"
my uncle joe told Louie that Hardy had died back in 1957!
"well dig the goddam shirker up and while your at it dig up Jean Harlow she can have the part of The Queen of Sheba"
uncle joe always said that history was not one of Louies strongest subjects!!
