he's ADDING to the melody, singing a love song to his partner with his body.He has a musicians soul, and as with all true tango, he dances for her,and not for the audience.
Seabastian, if u r a real musician, here's a difficult "exercise". Lay out a 4 part score with melody, accompanyment outline, her feet, his feet. It will change your life, if you can handle it. Do it for Pupi Castelo too, even better.
Dancing to the melody: nonsence imported from theater arts. Usually means in practice "dance w/out regard to the music". U can make it mean something about phrasing (try to find Gavito on phrasing) but why bother. Dancing is playing MUSIC with your body.
Discussion below is so absurd it's almost funny. Between accusing Portalea of not dancing to the music (!!!!), bringing up again the old nonsense of dancing to "the melody", and telling us about real, non-export, tango the Devil may choose. Asking Nito and Gustavo about Portalea ?? I might have had a question or two for Portalea concerning just about anybody else !!
@MiSebastianT I asked one of my teachers about Portalea's way of dancing/musical intepretation. He told me that all the old milongueros danced in their own way. Nobody taught them that something is correct, or not correct, they didn't pay attention if something is in accord wiith "Urquiza style" or whatever. They just danced the way they felt for a very long time. Portalea's musicality was his own undeniable off-beat-cadencia feeling that you can't judge by others' measures.
Wow this is club Sin Rumbo, in Villa Urquiza. I didn't recognize it at first. I was invited there by it's host Julio Duplan when I was in BA. A really cool milonga. With lot of old tangueros. It is obviously a place of enormous tradition.
that is history, thanks for sharing!!!

Perhaps Sebastian made the music for Mickey Mouse-pictures.
At least the cymbals.

Watching this is an emotional experience. It gives you the feeling that you could dance like that...a worthy goal, indeed.

Obvious, you are not a musician.
MiSebastianT 2 years ago
Obviously, you have yet to have asked Nito or Gustavo, or another reputable maestro.
You're right, my dancing is not spectacular, but I assure you I never dance off the beat like these people.
MiSebastianT 3 years ago
So part of this style is to dance off the beat? (sarcastic)
MiSebastianT 3 years ago
Exactly..!!! over the melody...that means so deep into the beat...(sarcastic too...!!)
victormadriz 3 years ago 3
That's bullshit. He's not even following the contour of the melody.
MiSebastianT 3 years ago
So far out you have to dig deep. Portalea is a mythic milonguero. He had a crush for rhytm but in the way of jazz. Off beat can be a way of life.

your comment shows that you don't get what tango's about. You look but you don't see.

Shut the fuck up. I am both a dancer and musician of tango. Ask Nito or Gustavo if such a thing is correct. They will tell you: NO.
MiSebastianT 3 years ago
by the tone of your reply, I'm confident you are neither. At very best, a mediocre musician and a worse dancer.

This is the real TANGO... the one danced on the neighborhood clubs, not the one showed FOR EXPORT...
Tahnks for posting this wonderful show.
Este es el tango real... el que se baila en los clubes de los barrios, no el que se muestra a los turistas para exportar...
Gracias por publicar este show maravilloso

Thank you so much for sharing this :-)
A member of SentirTango opened a topic in our forum, giving a small hommage to Gerardo, and I was looking for some videos to link from there.
un abrazo
