The Wachowski brothers wrote the movies storyline basing it around such ideas as Jesus, Agape and fundamentals such as Brahmin from hinduism. They even stated as much in interviews and bonus features on some of the dvds. Eg. They stated that Morpheus was respresentative of John The Baptist.
