Are there any of the Czech MiG-23s that have remained in airworthy condition since their withdrawal? If not, are there plans to restore a Flogger? I just ask because the other day I saw a MiG-21PF flying with a Czech insignia on YouTube.
I've always wondered, since the Mig-23 was made in both a fighter and a ground attack version, did it perform well in both roles? Often, an aircraft works well in one role but not so well in others, and the more roles it tries to fill, the less effective it seems to perofrm any of those roles (case in point - the U.S. F-111 - though it was intended to "do everything", the only roles it seemed to perform "adequately" in was attack and electronic warfare).
I like very much this craft, but the performence of this type was really poor, even the russians was dissatsfied with it. It was just the little bit better than the MiG-21, but more expensive, and more difficult to mantain. Of course the MiG-23 has no chanche against the F-15/16 in 1982.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
awful plane, crap maneuverability, poor visibility, radar and fire inaccuracy, its just another Russian poor reverse engineering and tecnology espionage, this time from F111.
Last Modification Was In Conflict in early 80 - s in Syria and Fighting With Israeli F15 and F16 and count after war was 54 migs lost - and 42 F15 and f16 - this is proof fact - tis is plane 3 + fighting with 4 gen planes - and count almost equal ;) !!!
The soviets should've developed the mig-21 further into something like the F-20 Tigershark or The JF-17. Simple, small and agile. They placed too much emphasis on take-off performance and not enough on KISS and dog-fighting.
I have an relative that ownes three Mig 21 in the US. If he could get them flying he would. With gas prices the way thay are, he can't afford to even drive them around the airfield. The only downside is that the're gas guslers.
don't build these Czech MiG 23's to be something they are not.
Not my opinion, it seems to be the opinion of every Russian and Communists yearning for the "good old days". Everytime I point out how the
MiG 23/25/29 have had poor showings in battle, they use the "export" castrated aircraft argument on me. These are Czech "export" models so they can't be any good. USAF Test pilots in Nevada hated the MiG-23, didn't want to even fly it.
Nope the Romanian pilots liked the Mig 23 , and it had a good operating record.
They considered this fast interceptor with a good payload a capable aircraft. The ex-Iron Courtain airforces were forced to retire the 21,23 and 29 pretty quickly because of major budget cuts.
Munteanuioan, thanks for the educated comment regarding the MiG-23. Isn't it interesting that although the MiG-21 was a much older design...both the MiG-21 and MiG-23 were both retired from service at about the same time in the Soviet Union.
Interesting - could you say a bit more about the reasons why they were so disliked by the pilots? I know that the workload was far greater in 23s then in 21s but was there anything else?
I agree they are nice planes.. no match for ANYTHING of western design, but they are nice and they accelerate like nothing else. They could survuve buy outrunning their opponents I guess. ; )
nene, pro ten případ jsem na začátek dal datum 1977-1998 aby si to nikdo nemyslel,že jsou stále používány,i když by to naše 20trojky směle zvládly jistě i dnes.

unfortunately xosrov2 has right:
The MiG-23/37 was the worst MiG ever.
I like very much this craft, but the performence of this type was really poor, even the russians was dissatsfied with it. It was just the little bit better than the MiG-21, but more expensive, and more difficult to mantain. Of course the MiG-23 has no chanche against the F-15/16 in 1982.
eftizenhat 1 year ago
The philosophy of the russians was to create cheap jets that could be mass produced.
A MiG 23 may cost 5 million, an F15, 30 million. So spending the same amount of cash you have 6 MiG23's to 1 F15.
Swamping your enemies airpsace with such a large number of jets would be very effective.

@eftizenhat
Hm...all that you wrote is Correct
But Only if you think on First generation of Mig-23 in versions MF/MP/MS...especially for Middle eastern export versions
But Second generations are much better, like P/ML and MLA versions
But Soviet Final MIG-23MLD is something really different
also if we compare it to alied Mig-23MLD,like Bulgarian...
That VERSION (Mig-23MLD) for Soviet airforce are aerodynamically very different to Non-sovet MLD versions, and much more maneuverable and capable!

Fool Mig-23 achieves much better performance than the Mig-21.
And Mig-21 is considered one of the best aircraft in the Cold War.
So stop talking shit like that, you know absolutely nothing about this plane.
