I haven't been playing cello very long, 4-5 years, however find myself in possession of one of Barak Norman's cellos, the label says 1706. Quite remarkable really

Can you tell me where is Mr Wispelwey in comparison to Han Na Chang today?? The man has NO sound at all !!! Pale? You are right ! He does have a very "pale" sound!
@Mizzles240 han na changs version is masterful, with amazing intonation, and is pure genius, c string? wot bout your g string? maybe thats a bit twisted!!!
Never thought that I'd ever say this, but despite being so different, his Bach just wins me over each time I hear it. Few musicians have guts to express themselves on such level of artistic integrity.
Fantastic, just fantastic. The Cameraman should be shot. Just when the cellist is about to do an interesting or awkward passage, the camera cuts away...Much of the visuals were useless...but a marvelous performance. Who is it?
Check out the tip, frog, length, and width of the stringing. I'm putting that style of bow somewhere around 1780-6. A friend of mine baby-sits his kids. How cool is that?
nope. modern instruments, baroque, and Wispy's classical, bows. Shame too. That concerto rocks, like all Haydn, on period instruments, especially winds.
Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on being Baching Mad on Classical Music Composer trading cards (issued in 1912): Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and many more included.
what's the difference in arguing between two ends of the performance scale? in the video of hanah chang at the age of 13, she displays little knowledge of the classical style, but is nevertheless awesome in her "monster cellist" qualities. wispelwei represents a completely different school. i like them both, although i wish hanah chang could learn to stop scratching so much.
however, she is an exciting, if slightly ferocious, cellist.
Ms. Chang's performance is full of exuberance and youthful bravada... Mr. Wispelwey's performance is astoundingly sensitive and harmonious with the orchestra.
Denle una cama elástica al director así también puede saltar para arriba además de a los costados. Un divino... pero nada como Du Pre para Elgar y Haydn.
Comparing Chang to Wispelwey is just meanness and ridiculous. how can you talk about a 13 yrs old girl who has a stroke of genius to a fading musician(I know his fan would say something about it but then think about her age again in this performance). Even Wispelwey would admit that she is genius.
Furthermore, I believe that part of performing should often contain the power and passion, and she actually doninates for that.
Speaking as a professional cellist there is no camparison between the 2. I listened to both performances and Chang plays with little understanding or elegance and she is frequently out of tune. I've heard dogs bark Jingle bells but that doesn't mean it is music.
Professional, eh? You know, you're insulting young cellists by brutally critisizing Han-na Changs's performance of it. Give her a smurfing break. She was THIRTEEN years old in that recording. I'm 13 and I'm learning this movement and I plan on playing it as she did. >:(
"fadiing musician"... wow... most great artists do not reach the peak of their career until at least Wispelwey's age. but maybe you are talking strictly about technicians, and not real artists.
just out of curiosity, i checked out Chang's Haydn clip. meh... good technique, and not much else. yes yes, "but she is only 13," etc. etc... but before you go crowning her a "genius," go have a listen to Heifetz or Menuhin at age 13. with true genius there's no need to use age as an excuse for lack of musicianship.
Why "better than Han-na Chang" ? Han-na was very young when she played Haydn. Wispelwey's got more experience and... I agree with pyja : Chang and Wispelwey have different approaches to music.
wispelwey has far more control over the cello than Hanna. His sound is so much cleaner, but both of them still handle the cello very well. I love Wispelwey's smooth sound opposed to the conventional open, brilliant sound you would hear from Hanna or Rostropovich.
yes i agree, hanna chang's performance was technically precise in pretty much every way, but i guess thirteen is just not mature enough to play with the feeling that wispelway plays.

Why on earth do people compare cellists? It's one thing to have like a certain musician, but to compare with another musician is ridiculous.
