goodness, i've been watching clips and clips of the piano here in youtube. it looks soo good. should i download this movie? Im just hesitating because it makes me remember how i cheated my boyfriend before and it was a terrible memory. now we're married and having a baby. with the sight of the videos it amazes me, but it brings back awful memories. i play the piano too...
if you love this, you MUST watch the video of "Let There Be Light "!!... it's a song by rock noir band BELLADONNA and MICHAEL NYMAN and it's based on this music from "The Piano". Michael Nyman himself plays piano on it... search for "belladonna nyman" here on youtube and you'll find it!! :-)
I think Michael Nyman's music, and particularly this piece are nothing less than genius - this song rolls and jumps between moods so fast from delight to deep sadness to adventure, just like waves on the sea. This film and its music are so much to me emotionally that I can't watch the film again - yes it's THAT touching.
@ichigatsujohn Whoops! I just saw this comment. Yes, there are scenes in it that we have seen in other films, but in THIS FILM, they are TRAUMATIC to watch. When the husband attacks Holly Hunter's character for instance. I have seen something similar a 100 times, but in this film, I could hardly stand to watch it. After what he did to her later, I was hoping the Keitel character would bury him in the back yard.
Good point about the oneness of piano, sea, and people. I liked it that at first he wouldn't take her to see her beloved piano on the shore but was drawn into Ada's magic. You can just see it in him as he circles and circles Ada, the little girl, and the piano all the while being drawn into their circle and becoming one with them. It's a fabulous scene. Truly remarkable scene and the music is perfect. Don't you love it when she first looks down & sees her piano on the beach from the cliff
This may be my very favorite sequence in the entire film. I especially love the seahorse of shells toward the end and Harvey Keitel trailing behind mother and daughter. He must have felt totally bewitched. I know I was. I confess that this is my favorite film of all times. Saw it when it first came out, bought the video, learned the piano score in 1994 and it's a collection of pieces I adore.
@Margaux3200 Yes, I know! What a little girl can do with two gobs of seaweed amazes me. I realize the scene is about Holly’s character, but honestly, I thought Anna was the frosting on the cake. If I was the editor, I would have shown a few more glimpses of her spontaneous ballet. That whole scene is SO ORGANIC. I don’t know how else to describe it. It’s like the people, the piano, and the surf are as one. Somebody pointed out that it is a seahorse/treble clef. LOL
I played with my old guitarorcester this song, theme song of the piano of michael nyman. It was really fun to do and sounded really great to. HAve reallt great feeling for this song
The piano is her voice ... Baines witnessed her in her best form, playing what she is passionate about - the piano. Her talent and beauty he sees creates him to fall madly, deeply, for her, what she really was in raw form. This is a classic love story.
@ilovesummerxx You're so right. I see this as two lonely people who come together because of their emptiness. The piano bridges it for them. The piano sings to their pain, heals, comforts, excites. It's amazing what music can do to the human heart, isn't it?
@carmncool Yes I know! Some people have almost no reaction to scenes like this. I am glad that I am one who appreciates it's beauty. :) I am VERY easily moved by film, and music. Notice the different types of posts here, about this. This film attracts people with a sensitive, higher intellect. LOL
This is my favorite scene in the movie. I love the final overhead shot. When Ada and Flora leave the beach, they leave their footprints in the sand. Notice that Baines doesn't simply leave the beach he walks into their footprints and follows. He's chosen his path.
The Piano: on my top ten list of favorite movies of all time. Holly Hunter & Anna Paquin certainly were deserving of the Oscars they won for their performances; but I think Harvey Keitel should have won in his category as well. Every time I see this scene again, it brings me to tears. An incredibly touching story and movie with an outstanding, very well chosen, cast of actors.
Taking her piano away is alos taking her soul away . Harvey Keitel is able to connect with her through her passion. He is mezmerized by her beautiful playing when she was playing on the ocean , her face show true happiness . The little girl was in he own dreaming world . It is a beautiful moment which is unforgettable .
This piece of music takes my breath away ..... Wild and free..... Isn't this the way passion should be? Opening your soul to the possibilities of everything and finding beauty even in the midst of despair.........
You are so right. Through the whole film, Holly looked so stressed out and depressed, but during this scene, with her on her piano, all that stress went completely away.
Good news: IT JUST CAME OUT ON BLU RAY!! $30 is the cheapest I've seen it though.
@HustlerPumpkin Its the tension caused by the vulnerability of Hollys character Ada and her 'disability', the reliance on her little friend Flora (who adds alot to the general feeling of vulnerability), her emotional desperation, her struggle to maintain a certain decorum in this dire circumstance, naturally conflicting with the mysterious and hidden danger of the much cruder Baines played by Harvey Keitel.
Yet underlying this surface tension is a heart wrenching cocktail of emotions developing between the two which drives the film, along with the beautiful piece by Michael Nyman which helps to open up and suggest alot for the film. I would describe the piece as 'painfully beautiful' which pretty much sums up the entire movie :) Thank you !
@BabyPeb1 Maybe, when she was around him she felt that she could truly talk for the first time through her piano...therefore his flaw of being unable to read was invisible to her just as much as her flaw of being unable to talk was invisible to him.
the entire movie, even with the passion and anger, keeps with the feelings of silence and the deep sea. an absolute masterpiece, everything movies should be.
Yes Wiki Tatum O'Neal who was ten, while Anna won at the age of 11. Wow, great Bio Man! I have so much respect for a good actor, and Drama is my favorite genre. I think the good ones are magical! You HAVE to see "The Piano." Anna won best supporting, while her movie Mama, Holly Hunter won best actress. The plot is that they were forced in to an arranged marriage, and had to move to New Zealand what a miserable situation that would be! I'll P. M. you for sure.

One thing that I have noticed about this scene, is the dress that Anna is wearing, has an earth-tone look to it. The off-white color of that dress blends in with the surf, and ocean perfectly, making her character seem to be a part of the ocean, and the good earth. If she was in a pink dress or something, it just wouldn't have worked as well at all.
