you know im really surprised they never ported this over to the Wii or even other consoles. They could have had a special addition with 1 & 2 on one disk. I mean come on, The opening graphics look better then some wii games.
The voice actors do a very professional job, it's one of the game's highlights. Baleog sounds a bit like an Eastern European though.
It's hard to argue against the CD-games sound work or even the obvious qualities of the CD-medium for that matter.
The characters here have become rendered caricatures, some of which look really grotesque. The low resolution fails to make the model's details recognizable in-game.
SNES-version has more and better animation, e.g. when grabbing ropes from a free fall.
@schtolteheim It really is a personal prefference. I think everything about the SNES version is better. I can read the dialogue faster than listening to the annoying voices, the way the game feels and controls is better on the SNES version. I think you can really tell a different company handled the PSX/SAT versions.
@schtolteheim SNES is much more true to the original (series) in appearance. I hate the way they look in the PS and Saturn version, just TERRIBLE. The voice acting is ok... not somethng to actually point out as a highlight though because reading those Box's is enough. It's just the retro feel to SNES that I like so much. While there are obvious changes to the characters... in the PS and Saturn version it goes too far in appearance... while the SNES version doesn't.
You show the render intro twice, but it really is absolutely the same thing!
Still you didn't compare the different pieces of music. The CD-versions have several songs for some scenarios(from medieval onwards I believe) and they really sound great, some of them have a slight techno feel to them, but it is well done. The Transsylvania song already beats everything you hear in the SNES-version(pretty bland, if you ask me).
How far have you played the CD-games? Did you hear all music and voices?
I remember as a kid, loving the first lost vikings, and being upset that there was no Canadian release of the sequel for some reason. All I saw was the 32 bit / PC pre-rendered version in magazines.
And back then, I thought the 32-bit version was some incredible upgrade that I'd never play (since I didn't have any 32 bit consoles yet) But looking back now, with them side by side, I appreciate the digital sprites a lot better. The SNES version just l looks and sounds like the REAL sequel.
@mangaas Man I never knew about Lost Vikings 2 until about 2008 or so. When I started getting big into collecting and the youtube community. But I pretty much agree with you 100%. The SNES version just feels like a sequal to the first and the 32 bit versions just feel...wrong. And I played the 32 bit versions first..so there's no nostalgia..just a prefference for one art style over another.
@JerryTerrifying Im with you Jerry... I have a place in my heart for The Lost Vikings and just discovered this gem had a sequel recently, gonna buy it wherever I can find it. 32 bit versions just look too different... SNES version is best =]
@mangaas Also Blizzard didn't actually program the PSX/SAT versions it was contracted to another comapny. A detail I didn't come across until a day or two after posting this review. I made note of it in one of my podcasts. :D
never heard of this game but i think i like the saturn/ps1one better. the snes just seems too different to me. i like the voice acting and stuff. seems like them putting on snes was just a cheap way to make more money to me.
Putting it on the SNES definitely wasn't cheap. Carts cost more to manufacture, PCB board, EEPROM chips, plastic cases, versus a small plastic disc. Also the production values look higher in the SNES version. Good 2d graphics are better than bad rush job 3d graphics.
Yeah I'm sure other people might be able to get into the 32 bit versions easier than I did. But for me man...hands down the SNES is the only way to go.
Wow I'm sure those sealed copies did cost a pretty penny...but it'll be well worth it. They're really two amazing games. And seriously...his chin looks straight up perverse.
awesome review man you sold me on the snes version just went to ebay and bought 1 & 2 new factory sealed version for the snes cost me a pretty penny but your a good sales man lol cheers bro as always 5/5 cheers later !!!
I use a DVDr. So I hit record then turn the system on. When I convert the DVD to digital video a few seconds get chopped off at the beginning and end of the video. Kinda sucks. Why do you ask?
Yeah I've heard her voice a thousand times. Same with Erik the Swift and Olaf the Stout...I've heard those same exact voices used in countless cartoons. I'm sure I've heard the actor that does Baleog the Fierce too...if he wasn't doing that terrible accent.
Aha! Good shit man this game waas so funny back in the day. I like this style of video you showed here. The comparison, it is quite intresting. I agree with you the voices are really anoying, and the levels in the SNES version look much better.
Read the conversation at 11:18 all the jokes about poor old Fang are hilarious! "A jumping Ferret, eh?" "quit badgering me" "I don't think he can bear much more of this..." I love that running joke of calling him lame animals.
I didn't even know there was a Lost Vikings 2, awesome! Great show man, really loved seeing the different versions. The SNES version does seem to have more artistic style. The voice acting sounds a bit goofy in the 32 bit versions, but it kind of fits I think, I don't think it'd annoy me to much, but the SNES version looks a lot more interesting for sure.
I've been waiting for this review since you made the LV 1 reviews. The wait was worth it because I respect your opinions and take them seriously. Sure the 32 bit versions may be a bit sloppy, but sloppy in a good way, meaning they're tolerable. As we both know, there are much, MUCH worse 32 bit remakes of classic games. Great reviews as always Jerry "The King" Terrifying.
Yeah I've wanted to get this video out for some time dude. I'm glad you stuck around and got to see it :D
The characters look like doo doo in the 32 bit versions compared to those gorgeous sprites. The backgrounds are great in both...the music is great in both but I preffer the SNES music and just think it sounds catchier.
i try to do my best - but its very hard to follow everything ;-) We are so much gamers on here, that it always hard to decide how to split the time ;-D
Great video on all three versions!! The SNES version seems to be the most expensive on Ebay-either because it was a late SNES release, a cartridge, or both.
Yeah when I first lookd the SNES version was pretty expensive so that's why I opted for the cheaper 32 bit versions...but I just couldn't get into it at all. After a few months I found a SNES copy for $15 and had to have it. And I'm SO glad I picked it up...its really the better version. In my opinion of course.
I think the spell at the end was inspired by Evil Dead / Army of Darkness and Street Fighter II - though the 3 words used in Army of Darkness also correspond to 3 characters in Return of the Jedi - Klaatu, Barada, Nikto - which originated from "The Day the Earth Stood Still".
"Howriyucan" is pretty-much (Shoryuken) the sound Ryu and Ken make when doing a Dragon Punch
Man I picked up on all that too. :D I think everyone gets the howriyucan one at least. I didn't know that there were characters in RotJ naked Klaatu, Barada and Nikto...but I did know that was from The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Yeah everyone that's watched a cartoon in the 80's and 90's has heard these voices before. Major Glory was awesome...So was Dexter's Lab...amazing cartoon. :D
The artistic style is terrible in the 32bit versions! There's way more style and visual falre in the SNES version. And the Music and sound effects are way better on the SNES too! Also that voice acting is awful and slow. I can read it faster than those poorly delivered lines. :D
I do think it's awesome that you like those versions for the very reasons I dislike them.
WTF!?????
baahhhFATALITY11 2 months ago
Oh man! Jim Cummings not only is the Narrator and Olaf, he also lends his awesome bad guy voice to Tomator as well!
I think I'll get the PS1 version as well as the SNES version, since I love the voices!

I prefer the snes version and I also wanna say that the scenes of the vikings look more smoother on the psx than sega saturn.
