@hideous10 Fetch was taught in a few steps... *(I don't have much to suggest if your p'let is not food motivated lol)* Praise and treat after each success.
For fetch...
1) When he'd touch the toy
2) I let him watch me put a seed under the toy so he would have to lift it up to get it
3) Repeat step two, no treat under, but on my hand so he'd drop it in my hand
4) From table, treat was beside my hand, I'd try to catch it but only treat when I got it, he caught on
@hideous10 Do you feed seeds in your p'let's diet? If so, try to check out a bulk food store for a different type of seed mix to offer as treats only. If not, try just a standard cockatiel mix. Also, millet spray... I don't know a bird alive that won't take to millet spray. The smaller the seed the better since it won't take them long to eat or fill them up quick so they'll come back for more right away.
@PenguinNinja45 Bonsai is very food motivated.. He'll do anything for seeds since they are not a part of his daily diet. I read a lot off the net to teach. Good luck. :)
He got turn around in probably 20 minutes. If your parrotlet is very tame, you could probably teach him that very easily if he has a special treat that he likes and you think he would work for. :)
Bonsai is 1 and a half now. He was probably 6 months old when I started to train him but he could have learned it right when I got him, I am betting. They are quick learners! :)
Thanks so much for the compliment! Bonsai is famous now, it seems. Hehe!
Turn around was actually fairly simple. 'Luring' is the training technique. If you want a more detailed account, send me a PM and I'd be more than happy to tell you how. :) *Not enough characters available in a comment reply to explain here* ;)
Wow! Amazing! I have a 4 month old celestial parrotlet but haven't tried to teach him any tricks yet. How did you train him to turn around I wouldn't even know how to begin! Really amazing video thanks for posting
Your Bonsai reminded me so much of PizzaPete but I never used food to train him but he was still a whopping 36 grams. How much is Bonsai? We have a new Pizza, yellow fallow, and 7 months like your little guy but what a different personality than the orginal PizzaPete! Bonsai is awesome to watch; my friend, Boombella, sent your link and so glad she did! Thanks!! Gae
Bonsai was pretty easy to teach these tricks. Most didn't take any time at all. I think it took him one day to do the tricks like "turn around" and "climb up", but for harder ones like "bring it to me" it took a few days. I've been training him since he was young, but mostly only the essential stuff like "come here" and "step up". The tricks have all been taught to him over the last 2 weeks or so. He is a fast study! :)
Bonsai is adorable! How old is he? I have a little guy just over a year old and I want to teach him tricks, but he's not so food oriented. Any tips on how to teach them? Thanks!
Bonsai is 7 months old. I really am unsure how to train a bird that isn't very food oriented.. Bonsai wasn't in the beginning, but when I switched his diet from seed to pellet, I knew he loved seeds still so I just use them. :)
So cute! I want to train my new little parrotlet I just got. He's 4 mths old and is still flighty, bites and runs away. =( So wondering if I should take him back and wait for a newborn. Is that millet you are rewarding him with?
I use cockatiel seed. He eats pellets as the main part of his diet, but still loves seeds so I use them. :) As for your little p'let, give him time.. these little guys are strong-willed and just need patience. He'll come around if you keep spending lots of time with him, I'm sure!
oh he is so cute! makes me want to get a p'let again. kudos to you for having the patience to work with him and teach him all those tricks. I know how from experience how um, strong-willed those little buggers can be:)

How did u train him to turn around and kiss u
gi042 8 months ago
How did you train him to bring things to you?
My parrotlet is kind of laid back, so I don't know how to teach him when he's not very motivated by anything.
(My lovebird that lives with him picked up on things a lot quicker than he did..)

Great! My new parrotlet that is being handfed now will look like your Bonsai! Just what I wanted. Yah!

Is your parrotlet considered a normal green?
naenae52 1 year ago
@naenae52 Yes, Bonsai is a normal green parrotlet. The males will have a blue streak of color by their eyes.
victoriais1337 1 year ago
Im getting a green male parrotlet soon. When my breeder says he is green, would that be the color of your green parrotlet? Thanks
naenae52 1 year ago
Thanks. :) Your p'let is adorable and training seems to be coming along nicely!

how cute !!!
btw what are u giving it as a treat?
nakochen 2 years ago
Hehe, thanks. He likes to show off. :)
The treats are just seeds from a cockatiel mix. He only gets seed as treats when I'm training him so he works really hard to earn it! :)

that is so adorable!!

How old is your bird and how long did it take to train him like that? I've only had my parrotlet for a month but he is pretty tame and loves to play.

jakedude12332 2 years ago
What are you using for a treat. I can't think of anything my birds would like that much and that is that easy and quick to eat.
wolfysluv 2 years ago
It is just a single seed from a mix.. I only give them to him as treats, but he loves them so he works well for them. :)
