thrash metal my friend, is not a very diverse sound currently. There are several bands however, that have very distinguishable sounds..... Gama Bomb, Bonded By Blood, Toxic Holocaust, Fueled By Fire, Lich King, all have their own sound. There are countless bands that sound similar. But I find those are the best ones.

Thrash is very hard to change without making it into something else. Make it too intense, it becomes Death Metal, make it more brutal, it becomes black metal, not aggressive enough turns it into a more traditional/NWOBHM style, etc., etc.
