@MyMytalMajesty and his birthday was 2 days ago and he turned 48 but looks younger than that, ages the same as Mangini now but looks nothing like his age
I met him in Rome on Wednesday for the meet&greet ... I told him I was sorry that his father past away ... he looked into my eyes and thanked me. I told him that he will always be the spirit of dream theater...he just smile...he was very happy
@challengeleo youre right, its been almost 25 years of non stop work and playing, of course he had great times, but he must (im not supposing) be tired...
@tpattern1 first of all, im pretty sure his father would be proud of Mike (he is like one of the greatest drummers ever) and i think he would let mike decide for himself what he wants to do with his life.
and Mike didn not leave to join another band.
he left because the band would rather go on without him than take a break that mike really felt that he needed...
and seriously? wtf is the matter with your attitude?
@tpattern1 hey!hey! c'mon bro??? do you actually think mike would leave dream theater just like that? he posted on his site that it was a really tough decision, and i believe him just imagine that his dad named the fuckin band!
1. Judging psychologically, I'd guess you're dad is either a drunk or never around or just doesn't give two shits about you.
2. Anyone would be proud to be Mike Portnoy's dad. I have no reason to believe that his wouldn't support him no matter what.
3. He did not leave for A7X. Personally, I was hoping he would stay with A7X, but they all agreed it was best not to. He left DT because the band would rather go on without him than take a break.
The Best of Times is for me one of DT:s greatest songs, its so emotional in a lot of ways but its also a very beautiful and sad song at the same time. The instrumental middle section and the long guitar solo at the end of the song is just totally amazing. Its so epic and beatiful and it represents a lot of DT:s musical power as well. It goes straight into my heart every single time I hear it.
@Beholder0fJustice Look around you. What do you see? Is it really necessary to say something like that just to provoke all the fans here? You're showing absolutely no respect for him, even as a human-being, when you insult him in an interview where he talks about his father who recently passed away.
I say thank you Mike, you might have lost someone important, but you've contributed some of the best music i've ever heard, and i've learned so much about music and playing drums from you.
Mike, thanks for The Best of Times. My Dad recently passed from cancer also (May 20th, RIP Dad) and that song really hits me hard every time I listen to it.
mike thank you for everything and sorry about your dad but i mean the best of times it a wonderful song i mean i'm always singing those were the best of times ........ i 'll always remember
When I first heard The Best of Times I thought it was badass. But when I found out it was about his dad dying it just put so much more emotion into it.
The only time ol' rainbow-beard Mike Portnoy ever disappointed me with his lyrics was with Constant Motion. The Root of All Evil, on the other hand, is my favorite DT song as far as lyrics go.
@kirbymaster5 Constant Motion is one of the best songs for me, but that is because I totally relate to the OCD experience. Also musically I love that song :-)
Poor Mike. I'm surprised he didn't cry or at least come close to tears during this interview. I probably would have if I were as torn up as he appeared to be. This goes to show that the death of a parent can still really hurt a person even when they're a full-grown, fully mature adult. I'm glad he was at least able to say goodbye the way he wanted to.
On a lighter note, I like how he's grown his hair out. He had that mullet thing going for a while but it looks a lot better now.
@0611dean When I heard that part, I felt really sad. I would have cried for sure if I heard the song when I saw their live in October. All the crowd singing "The best of timeeee" in the chorus.. damn such a beautiful song :) and if you think about its meaning to him, it's more beautiful :)
@KAZERELOAD, yeah, i saw them in october in manchester.i got in early and stood right in front of JP, i was waiting to here that incredible solo from BEST OF TIMES , but still a great night ,best live band i ever saw :)
My father passed on August 2nd of this year, and this song has helped me out and depressed the fuck out me ever since. Glad to know his Dad got to hear the song before he passed.
The Best of Times is an amazing song. The pre-chorus bit that JP plays under the lyric "I'll always remember..." just floors me every time. Simple, but incredibly effective. I can understand why Mike won't play it live yet, but I hope they do one day.

your such a fucking ego moron, swallow your words you idiot there is no one thing better than another, stupid fucking moron you dont deserve to hear dream theater
This album wasn't bad at all. Some may say it may lack in content (the songs are really long, but six really isn't enough) but each song was solid. The only bad thing in my mind was Portnoy's corny growls on Nightmare and Passage.
They've got one of the most impressive bodies of work I've seen yet. They haven't faltered and made a complete mess of crap, it's always a consistent effort...no matter what the idea or concept behind it may be.
His real father Howard named the band Dream Theater. Yeah, Honor Thy Father was about his step father who he had to live with when he was younger after his parents divorced and his real dad Howard lived elsewhere.
Haha, it would indeed make no sense if it was the same guy. Going from 'Rotting root in the family tree' to 'Those were the best of times' would've been a bit of a leap, haha.
LegArhMih's religious devotion is but the material extension of a demonic deceit conducted by perverted clergymen who mislead believers into blind destructive thinking and acting. Beneath the appearant state of holiness lies a rotten woumb of hatred and deceit. Beware of this false prophet!!!

for me, BCSL is a really bad album, im a big, big fan, but i have to tell the truth, its a bad album.
cbettin77 2 years ago
It really shows your pathedic to come to a video where its talking about a song that was by someone, for someone who was near death. You are scum.
Peace to Howard Portnoy.

You should choose your words more carefully here. It's your subjective opinion and I know that there are ALOT (CAPS OMGLOL) that disagree with you.

They've got one of the most impressive bodies of work I've seen yet. They haven't faltered and made a complete mess of crap, it's always a consistent effort...no matter what the idea or concept behind it may be.

Another great DT album. A big fan of their whole body of work.

how sad, i didnt know that.

I didn't know that either. That band is just amazing. They seem like good guys, too!

wow was it really his step father and not biological father? is that true? so which father named the band Dream Theater?
jayco4 2 years ago
His real father Howard named the band Dream Theater. Yeah, Honor Thy Father was about his step father who he had to live with when he was younger after his parents divorced and his real dad Howard lived elsewhere.
Haha, it would indeed make no sense if it was the same guy. Going from 'Rotting root in the family tree' to 'Those were the best of times' would've been a bit of a leap, haha.

it's so ironic how he wrote a song about how terrible his father was (honor thy father) in 2003, and now he's dead.
Turbulence654321 2 years ago
The song is about his step father, not his biological father.

oh is it? i didn't know that

LegArhMih 2 years ago

LegArhMih's religious devotion is but the material extension of a demonic deceit conducted by perverted clergymen who mislead believers into blind destructive thinking and acting. Beneath the appearant state of holiness lies a rotten woumb of hatred and deceit. Beware of this false prophet!!!

LegArhMih 2 years ago
