I became an EMT in 1979, worked on rescue ambulance, became a Paramedic in 1983. Even usef a biophone radio just like they used...did pretty much all those things...the show had excellent technical advisory. Best part of my early career...I worked out of a 1980 Chevrolet Suburban ambulance just like the one in this clip! Had the biggest engine Chevy ever made.
hey folks of "emergency" i have soemthing to say .. check out my neww song soon it willll blow your mindd and be the number one song here. since the song "sierra"!! I KIDD u not >.. check out !! johndenverSINGS! that JOHNDENVERSINGS !!!! any one thinks they can come up with this ONe song there They are wrong !! take care and ill look for UU on johndenverSINGS!!
It's still astounding to think that paramedics were something new then. Before this ambulance drivers had no qualifications in even first response!
My paramedic friend showed me his meds bag in the truck last weekend. It's huge! Imagine what it was like when they were still figuring out procedures and techniques.
Dr. Brackett ordered Lidocaine because the patient was in V tach. They couldn't defibrillate (countershock) him because he was fully conscious. Lidocaine is a medication for treating abnormal heart rhythms. They were trying to get him out of the V tach, which is an unstable abnormal heart rhythm, into something more stable like a sinus rhythm.
wow, I am doing my E.M.T.-B class chief said to look this show up cause he watched it when he was younger, what a hoot, the acting WOW,lol.... I love it! lol
Big fan of this show since I grew up in LA. Funny thing is that up til today alot of that's remains the same. The LA County FD protocol for paramedic rescues still require the squad unit to follow the ambulance with 1 paramedic aboard. Many FD's followed the LA County example based on this show!

Spot the errors. Wear your gloves, gentlemen. Remember your universal precautions. And did the doctor actually tell the paramedic to use a defibrillator on a conscious patient? That's like giving a boost to a car that is running. Anyone else catch errors?
Obviously Dr. Brackett forgot he was obviously conscious to relate to them he was having chest pain. But you DO shock someone with c/p in V-Tach now it's called synchronized cardioversion, same as a defib just a lower energy level. Didn't have that in the early 70's though...
@warrior350es thats because we were still being paid to rebuild the world then. Now they just hate us for it and we have an apatite for spending that can't be afforded.
It may be a junky old truck by todays standards....but it was state of the art in 1970....this show was spinoff of Adam-12, and most paramedics both then and now are men
The units started out being 'rescue units' that meant anything from firefighters 'down' to accidents, entrapments, etc. Then durng the late 60's(early 70's on the show) paramedics were basically invented. The squad became an EMS unit as well.
loved this show growing up, wish they would still show it on tvland or something

Did you guys catch the part where the doc instructs the paramedic to give the patient "livacane"? Who does that during a heart attack?

Paramedics didn't wear gloves in those days.

if you did apply defib, then the patient would either fall unconscious or it would hurt like hell

To be fair it wasn't the streets of Los Angeles City. This show was based on Los Angeles County, and all the smaller cities within the county.
