I hate this episode b/c I believe it is the one which introduces the notion of the "Prime Directive" & I hate the notion of the PD. I hate it for its own reasons but also b/c it is treated so hypocritically in the series. Kirk is, frankly, constantly violating it, especially in this very episode. He deliberately alters the historical developement of this society. He alters their religion, the most profound interference imaginable. Kirk is always killing the gods.
the old model ships were better than the digital ones. I don't get why the powers to be can't see that. These special editions suck same as the Star Wars Special editions.
Starship Exeter, which unfortunately has ceased production, was a stand-out fan-based series that sought to not only answer what happened to the USS Exeter but to continue its mission. They even had a pilot script that details its recovery and attempts to answer the perplexing questions as how the people of Omega 4 could have remnants of the American flag and the Constitution.
@HerrEllsworth Roddenberry had penned OMEGA GLORY as this was part of the 1st group of stories he was going to use to "sell" ST to the nets....Dropped from the script was a discussion that they were the descendants of US and Red China manned space colonization before the "Federation" which both had attempted to colonize this star system---
@wlt777 While I never read an official explanation of the fate of the Exeter, there is a fan produced "Star Trek: Exeter". In one of the productions, the new captain is taunted by an captured enemy as being "the captain of an unwanted starship, haunted by a dead crew." You can see it on U-tube.
This episode had VERY strong potential -- until one scene in particular. You can guess which one it is...
"The Omega Glory" was one of three episodes considered for a pilot episode. Ultimately, it wasn't chosen, but the parallel-development idea, complete with American flag, is definitely there to appease the suits.
But even I, a major sci-fi buff and American, cringe that a parallel society would develop an identical flag and Constitution, only to abandon it. And that's what wrecks it.
'Alternative Factor' - as a kid, I loved it. As an adult it's the most annoying, inept, vapid episode ever written. Even "Spock's Brain" and "The Way to Eden" aren't as bad.
This episode contains one of the most 'Duh' moments in tv history XD

Poor U.S.S. Exeter...............Whatever became of that starship? Perhaps the Exeter drifted into Tholian space like the U.S.S. Defiant did?

I like this one more and more as the years go by, but the ALTERNATIVE FACTOR strikes me as unwatchable these days...
