  • I bet you would think twice before walking up and poking him in his ample belly!

Arigato Sensei :)

  • Sensei Kase does a very old karate style! This is very good! We can forget how karate was and we need to keep this tradition! This Sport karate that some federations are doing is destroying the real karate! Oss!!!

  • @Alexonboard The JKA and all of it's lineages ARE SPORTS. They are not sports in the minds of those who have been indoctrinated by them. Yet, history, study and the realities of Budo and how it came into existence tells quite another story. The JKA, and it's lineages, practice a sport that has a terribly deficient syllabus as a martial art and can not hold a candle to Okinawan karate. I did not say it was worthless or they can not fight, I said it is not karate, I know, I am am life member.

  • @IEKUKATAKA how is it not karate? is karate not allowed to evolve and change with the times like society does and evbody in it? evtn evolves and changes. people are fitter stronger and faster now than they ever were.look at all pictures of Funakoshi and some of his students..stances were poor by todays standards, no good. read karate-do Nyumon & look at the pics of Ten no Kata.stances are wrong, bent wrists.bodies leaning. budo spirit is different thing. each sensei needs to teach that himself

  • @Darragh62 Read what you ask about a martial art developed in another culture and for the defense of their lives. You have an ignorant and selfish perspective. Poor stances, wrong, bent wrist, budo etc. It is obvious you have been poorly educated about a subject you still know little of. To be honest, I would rather spend my time responding to an objective, discerning person, you aren't. Budo was not a part of karate and the karate of Okinawa has not changed in that it is THEIR martial art.

  • @IEKUKATAKA what r u talking about? so nobody else is allowed to practice or expand on karate???? were not allowed, u know nothing about me or wat i know... and the chinese brought martial arts to okinawa... ur a very bitter narrow-minded little man, who would do well to open ur eyes n mind a small little bit... these are totally diff times... n look at the pictures im talking bout with wrists bent.... if u can successfully punch sum1 with a bent wrist u are 1 hell of a man.. grow up or piss off

  • @Darragh62 10:1 says you would be offended as hell if another person sold a game called golf that was played with a cricket bat and a soft ball. You are just another selfish, ignorant western ass that wants karate to be just as he sees fit. It isn't just as golf isn't. Karate is already defined very well and defined by the Okinawan culture centuries ago. I have spent far too much time already conversing with a fool. Do what you like, you deserve your own ignorance.

  • #1. Lyoto Machida, Shotokan!

  • To see Bunkai or Kata as direct application is a bit of ignorance and a narrow minded approach. No offense. But this is the way people not famialiar with Eastern MA do.

  • Kata or Bunkai have different meaning. They are to teach karateka body meachanics. There are thousands applications for the same kata move or combination. The idea is not to be ready to use a particular technique from the bunkai but to prepare your body to use body mechanics energy and body/muscles memory whilst fighting or applying some of the Shotokan techniques.

  • There are many hidden techniques within shotokan kata that are defense moves against various takedowns, low kicks, etc.

They are not taught by all instructors however. In my Japanese instructors classes 40 years ago, we did all of these as well as kicks to the legs, sweeps, and defense from the ground...and it was pure shotokan, with no additives!

  • Crap!

  • Definately one of the greats! ....He is a big guy, yet he can move so well. The one thing I've noticed recently is anything that looks easy is hard when it comes to karate. (OSS)

  • He may not "move so well" but he defenetly was one of the greatest karate practisers ever. He fought withi his bare hands. He killed due to karate. He developed karate shotokan. He's really a legende!

  • Sensei Kase was most probably the last great master. It is not possible judge this video nor to fathom his karate as it is not possible for a normal practitioner who has not traveled so very deep in zen and karate do as he did. To comment his size, age or compare the kata with competition standards is not very wel j informed at all, just ignorant, I'm sad to say.

  • No good!

  • acerwk. I see you on so many of these Shotokan viseos insulting the great teachers who have given so much of themselves to all of us. Why do you do that?

  • Because shotokan doesnt work in real fight.nobody will attack you with oi-tsuki.where are the drills against takedowns, low kicks and roundhouse punches?

  • I appreciate your your response, but I have to disagree. I don't understand how kicking, punching, kneeing, and elbowing (just to name a few) wouldn't work in a fight. If those techniques don't work, I don't know what would. I'm out of ideas. I know I've used Shotokan, and it works quite well. I believe the Machida brothers are using it quite well also. Lyoto is 15-0. It could be just a coincidence, but I don't think so. I think there may be something to this Shotokan stuff. Osu.

  • Machida is black belt in BJJ so he knows the ways to defend against takes down etc.if he was only stay in his Shotokan training then his record was 0-15

  • So is it BJJ you train in? I'm trying to understand where you're coming from. As for takedowns, all the takedown defenses I've seen Lyoto use were Shotokan. Do you really think Shotokan karate doesn't train for takedowns? I know I've been training in how to take guys down, and how to defend against it for years. Its automatic second nature. That's all from Shotokan. Did you know that shotokan also has ground fighting?

  • Shotokan doesnt train and doesnt have drills against low kicks.takedowns, round house punches in syllabus or in Dan exams.

  • For a roundhouse punch, you step in. For roundhouse kicks, you step in, or move back and slide your lead foot back to let the kick go by, than counter attack. As for low kicks, your best friends in karate are Hi Lo Hi, and Lo Hi Lo. We ALWAYS kick low in shotokan. Its basic training. We kick the knee, the inside and outside of the thigh, and sweep the foot. As for takedowns, We bait people to try those. You can throw, sweep, move out of the way or strike. This is all Shotokan. Osu

  • I have fought against Thai fighters, and judo, and BJJ, and I've won a few, and lost a few. All are dangerous. I don't claim that Shotokan is the ULTIMATE. It depends on who's doing it. It works for me, and others. You should show some respect, but I know you won't. I don't believe that you understand Shotokan, and I don't think that I will ever change your mind. You've made your decision. Good luck in your training. Be humble. There is always someone bigger, quicker, and stronger. Osu.

  • thai fighter? isn't that an imperial ship from star wars?

  • Muay Thai

  • @brucejonesful lol yea man

  • Mine does, Thank you :)

  • Mine too, but he's made up his mind. Some people can only learn the hard way. Oh well... That doesn't happen through a keyboard. You and I know the truth.

  • they only practice this silly ippon/gohon kumite.defenses against oi-tsuki.nobody will attack you with oitsuki in the streets so...

  • Not true at all. We also step to the 45, 90 and do tai sabaki. As for ippon kumite, that is a drill to train you to see an opponent make a move. It is the first step in many, many, sparring drills leading up to free sparring. As for oi zuki, that is a lunging attack. Surely you've seen lunging attacks in the street? I agree no one will attack oi zuki, but they will lunge. Funakoshi also refers to oizuki as a "Pursuing punch" or chasing a fleeing opponent down. Surely you've seen that? Osu.

  • As luck would have it, I had a guy charge at me in a hallway one time. I couldn't move to the side, only forward or back. He was blind drunk, so I didn't smack him too hard, but he was easily subdued thanks to the muscle memory of ippon kumite. I will admit, I got lucky there, because I'd practiced that exact scenario so many thousand times in ippon kumite. Still... it is just one drill of many, leading up to free sparring where you can step anyway you want. It makes your response autimatic

  • This is the main purpose of the kata or form, to develop a muscle memory, that even is not precise as the kata routine at all, you may be able to respond to any given situation of combat.

  • Awesome!

    5 *****

  • Sad to see he had passed on, he was my old teacher.

  • Very sad to see he's passed on, he was my old teacher. I remember the club being based in Gazza but I see its relocated, nice to see the club is still going strong.

  • well he is good, to be honest that was the style back them, it was all about power...

the style now is technique with power, im not saying he didnt have technique he did, but now speed is the way we deliever power.

Neither way is wrong, just the art has developed. in the last 10 years shotokan as become more popular than any karate and is going strong.

I like watchin these clips, you can learn alot from, and if you dont aleast your learnin where it came from.

    thanks for the upload

  • Please, respect 10th dan Master Taiji Kase. And in any case nobody can judge anything just by looking to a few videos on youtube.

About 15 years ago i participate to some stage with him. I still remember his teachings and keep in my heart and in my mind his kime. He didn't practice Karate do, he WAS the Karate do itself.

  • For all those who think master Kase wasn't strong. He used Karate to destroy his opponent and also did so. If u comment please keep in mind that when he performed this kata he was a bit older than 20 years, and still had a lot of power!

  • Kase was not always this large, but he was always a little thicker than average for a Japanese. I would guess that he had a thyroid or some other glandular imbalance, because he trained hard but didn't burn up the calories the way most of us do.

  • wow, the one that can´t say this man isn't good is simply out of his mind! This guy is the best in the world though he is dead now... BUT he is still FANTASTIC!

  • Yeah, this guy is fat. His techniques and stances are sloppy. However, I bet he has a load of power.

  • I think he probably has a great deal of power. However, he's fat and not athletic, and this really limits his karate.

  • Trained with sensei kase a few years back (I think he died last year). He kept blinking at kime, which seemed odd. Someone said he'd been an executioner (beheading other Japanese soldiers with a sword) for the Japanese in ww2, and had blinked to keep the blood out of his eyes. True or not, when the class bowed he made the point with the gentle humour that often comes with genunely tough men - by miming - that you should never lower your eyes, in case someone chops your head off!

  • I find that hard to believe considering he was only about 12 years old during WW2

  • OSU! In 1998 in Hamburg he performs haito against a wall..

    it was amazing..

    KIME!

    Real Power! Really strong!

    OSU!

  • Ur calling him fat when your name is bigmac???

If you have no respect for Karate don't speak here.

  • So i like Metallica? I'm a 3rd Dan in Shotokan and have been training since 1996.

Besides, what was so "interesting" about your original comment? And how does youe username make you so smart??

If you ever met Sensei Kase i would like to see you tell him he's fat and has no Koshii.

  • No seriously, what are you like 11 yrs old?

Yeah yeah your great, we get it, now please piss off and leave me alone.

  • This fat sensei was once a very capable sensei and would have whupped your sorry behind...

You have a poor attitude and show your immaturity in your words.

  • If you made third dan in 12 years I would be quite surprised....this is not common in Shotokan....but not impossible.

  • I think its fair to say one punch from him would be all it would have taken to floor almost anyone.

  • i agree

  • mon sensei était un de ses élèves, sa perte a été tragique pour lui comme pour notre club;aurevoir sensei...

  • Very nice kata. Oss.

  • Oss! Sensei...

  • Es irrepetible,

  • I've very nice memories with Mr. Kase... Goodbye...

  • corection, kase sensei had nanodan (9th) and was the founding father of WKSA and also one of the few sensei on the panel of directors of the original JKA (along with kennith and gichen funakoshi)

goddammit. he knows what hes doing, perhaps the leaning forward has to do with his big belly, but remember, big hara = big kime

h3 out with: i wanna go to the moon

  • When moving forward, the body should not preceed the hips, but instead the hips and the pushing of the back leg must drive the body forward. I don't see much kime in his oi-zuki probably because he leans forward.

  • hmm, you see i know this because i have been trainig for the last 18 years, also i have trained with kase shihan and he definitely does NOT lack kime, i remember one instance where he was sitting on a chair and with a simple tension of the hara he (claimed to make himself 100kgs heavier, the chair broke right beneath him, he was also very quick for such a heavy set man and percieved very well

    h3 saying: lets evolve

  • That would have been marvelous to see. I guess you are right.

  • You had to follow Kase Sensei for a couple of years to understand what he was teaching, in pictures or movies you cant really tell..His Kime was outstanding, so his movements and techniques. His approach to Budo karate-do is not easy to understand. 1. Spirit 2.Technique...

  • absolutely right

  • I only had a couple of training with this great master when I was a junior grade back in the 80s but I agree his kime and his karate altogether was amazing for a man of his stature ,incredible speed and power !

  • Well he ain't not allive anymore I wish you would have got a blow from him in lifetime.

    Regards

    ekkenekepen

  • True; but there's something about his technique - a kind of ease and depth, maybe. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's almost like he's using internal power. Whatever, to me it's very impressive. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember he was never defeated.

  • Nanodan is 7th, and 9th is Kudan :)

Hw come big hara = big kime ???? Big Hara of most of Japanese Master s explains

Big hara = too much beer

  • With all due respect to the memory of the man, all the videos I see of Kase Sensei have him always leaning forward whenever he is executing from zenkutau dachi or kokutsu dachi. This is true even of videos of his kata performances taken during his younger days. In kihon, this is a no-no, and I'm afraid Kase sensei was unable to rid himelf of this bad habit.

  • Tnx for sharing this video! Kase Sensei developed techniques in Karate-do that may be not practiced anymore. We are a lot of Senior students missing him today.

  • what do you mean may not be practised? I assume you are talking about using in competition? In my eye everything is allowed in training, its your own choice!

  • What I meant was "a lack of knowledgement and understanding" the Way of Budo Karate-do. Kase Senseis development on "Kaisho Waza", open hand technique and breathing was outstanding. In competion of course hard to use ;) But what´s "your own choice" worth if you dont know the way and usage of Budo karate...?

  • hi alastor great vid man i would like to see sensei kaze my sensei had made a lot of lessons with him

  • I am happy to see that you liked the movie
