  • Those are the fastest vehicles on the freeway. :O

  • Stunning! Highway landings are a great opportunity to see jet airplanes from very close. I had never seen the Taiwanese Indigenous Fighter, I first thought of a f-18 / f-16 hybrid. It's elegant... Why don't you export it?

I remember the main runway in Le Bourget Air Show being closed back in 1993. A Rafale took off with full after burner and burned the asphalt !!!

    Go RoCAF!!!

  • @er1cav The IDF is not exported due to US export restriction. The main part of the engine is from US. Require US consent to export.

  • Pretty cool...5 star from Türkiye..=))

  • Additionally, when the highway was still under construction in the mid-70's, they tested the same with F5-E.

  • The easy part is the takeoff/landing. The purpose of such exercise is to practice the logistics of fueling and arming dissimilar aircrafts on a highway. Perhaps also testing how to get the fuel trucks through spectator traffic jam on time. lol...

Notice that the IDF did not take off with full A/B, either because of the lighter airframe, or a shallower pitch.

  • French military gear is as good as US-made ones, believe me

  • Taiwan needs to replace F-5s with more IDFs.

  • What's wrong with the F-5's?

  • Aging and capability not up to par. What it can do the IDF can do also. Only fighter not BVR capable. Helps with logistics when eliminated (Their logistics aren't the best to say the least.).

  • @peepeevagi too old

  • Nothing new . Using hiways for operating planes is known and used in Sweden since 1960 and in Poland since 1966.

  • South Korea's highway and road infrastructure was built with usage as a makeshift airfield in wartime. It's arguable the US interstate system is designed to specifically have many straight sections not just for fasting travel time but for possible use as an emergency airfield. It's not confirmed I don't think, but it's plausible, and most definitely useful as such.

  • The Mirage 2000-5 is a 3rd generation airframe that is fitted with the 4th generation avionic and weapon systems.

  • that the blackhalk in blue?

  • Good AirForce, i Hope you will buy our Rafale ^^ (yes, it's actually to expensive :( )

  • Rafale rules, F16 sucks!!!

  • Right now France wants to sell weapons to Taiwan. Hope the Communists don't block it...

  • Mainland's existence alone chickens out the French.

  • Wow a lot of Mirage 2000s. Hope France sells the Rafale to Taiwan

  • I hope so.

  • @ragabara Not gonna happen, French has too much interest in PRC.

  • he held the nose up pretty long.

  • Aerodynamic braking.

  • Most highways can be used as emergency runways.

  • xxwzaebd, I am sure aircrafts can land and take off on most highways like this video showed! However, can they be support with fuels, munitions, extra pilots, repair men, repair parts, and so on at any point of those highways??

  • Weapon /fuel store facilities should be prepared along potential wartime runways ; vehicles are also required so that the supplies are in place whenever needed.

  • I don't know the situation in Taiwan, but during the cold war there have been a large number of emergency airports on highways in both parts of Germany. The parking lots on rest stops were planned big enough so there could park several airplanes. And there were also movable towers, gas stations and pre-installed communication lines at this rest stops.

  • Most countries have wartime mobilization plans including fuel, ammunition, NBC shelters etc;so the preparations should be not a problem. I heard Switzerland still performs highway takeoff/landing trainings.

  • Sure, but as you can see the street tarmac is heavily heated from the afterburner flames during the start phase. Could be interesting to know if an airfield tarmac is made from a special asphalt mixture or the same as on common highways

  • Not necessarily. The roads are exposed to A/B flames for a very short time only therefore they are not heavily damaged. Otherwise there would not have been extensive highway takeoff/landing trainings in the past.

  • I don't even think the flame will hurt the asphalt at all. All it does is melt it, which should actually help if there are cracks.

    F16s has worst takeoff, LOL.

Do they practice IDF grass landings? (I think IDFs can take smooth fields.)

  • After this exercise, the highway open almost immediately. So I guess the asphalt didn't hurt at all.

  • This movie proves that F-16 could operate from highway strips. Denying this is a part of black PR against F-16's in Poland. Thanks for posting :)

  • Not only F-16 but the AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-kuo and the mirage 2000 ...:P.

  • Long Live the Taiwan Air Force!!!!

  • Awesome!!

  • prefect

  • wow landing a plane on a long flat strech of tarmac who would have thought it :)

  • We had a very large square (length=1.2m,width about 150m or so if I remember correctly, fully paved) which could be used as a backup runway. Was a beautiful place on which we could run, ride bikes etc.Was like a sea made of pavement. And large rallys took place there.Too bad the place was turned into a park in 1997.

  • The A/B flame reaches a specific area of the pavement only for a short time, therefore the road is not damaged, I think. However, in case of a VTOL requiring A/B for vertical takeoff, the situation would be different and such a VTOL would be operated on special surfaces when taking of vertically.

  • Nice reheat on the Mirages and F-16s. I wonder if the road got burnt up.

  • this is so useless. they still think it is WWii time.

  • useless? rofl....

Airbases GET bombed in a Conflict by a chance of 90% a Road Strip only gets bombed by a chance of 60-75% and those 15-30% decide about life or death!

with your argumentation, every Plane not being VTOL would be useless, making 99% of the worlds Airforces "useless" :P

  • for the entire highway system of taiwan, there are only 2 spots which are suitable for air fighters to use. for modern air combat, you cant just pump fuel and add cannon ammo then let the place go fight again. you think you can bolt on a missile with a wrench? you think F-16 can run 60 miles per gallon like your Prius? how many fuel trucks do you need? and where are they? how much time do you need to clear the track for the next plane to land? where do the pilots rest?

  • <<for the entire highway system of taiwan, there are only 2 spots which are suitable for air fighters to use>> There are at least 6 backup runways, and don't say F words while discussing.

  • ok, 6, even you know it, PLA doesnt? even 60, is any of them prepared? when to start the preparation? after the war starts?

  • I don't give a damn. The 2 things I care about is that 1. you provide wrong informaton, and 2. you won't use F words anymore. Be gentle and reasonable.

  • It is unreasonable if an UFO lands on the highway. Maybe the use is to fool you!

  • must have been inspired after watching the movie, SWAT (Learjet scene). whatever, just thought i post my comment (Swedes been doing it, though, for a while).

  • The highways in Taiwan are constructed (20 years ago) from the very beginning with dozens of backup runways. So, it is SWAT steal the idea from Taiwan! ^_^~

  • Wow great video. Nice to see several types of fighters taking off and landing on freeways.

  • Great!!
