Pidgin is the best, simple and reliable, not like that shit Yahoo Messenger that doesn't even work, it fails at displaying messages, what a crappy messenger, its version 10 and they didn't resolve this bug, i tried to fix it miself but it didn't work, i tried all fixes and nothing, then i decided to uninstall it completelly because it was fucking retarded so i installed Pidgin and it works, displays messages and works like a champ. Fuck Yahoo Messenger.

I used to use Windows Live Messenger but I found it always froze or crashed like Internet Explorer does. Also it is not user friendly and there was no link to call my contacts. Now I use Aim Messenger and I have had no problems with this and I use Google Talk. Which also works well. I have just started to use Instantbird which just does email texts. But Instantbird is a lot easier to use than Pidgin and uses a lot less space on the computer. Andrea.

Digsby is also another good alternative that also support many other services (Yahoo, Facebook, Google talk etc.). I tried miranda but its kinda annoying becuase u have to install a lot of plugins to get the functionality of other messengers.

I love Miranda, I´ve been using it for a couple years or so, but for some reason, sometimes gave me strange errors, like sometimes people doesnt see my typing, or answers take more than.. If they fix that, i will dismiss Live Msn for ever

it is possible to install msn 7.0 by running it under xp compatibility mode., it's relatively lightweight and the webcam works, however offline messaging does not

I use the linux version of pidgin and it does support personal messages. The windows version should support it too. The thing about personal messages is that they come together with your status (when you make a new status there should be a big text box that says message... the title is just the name of the status, it is irrelevant)

I've used Pidgin for years now. Much better than WLM (Windows Live Messanger), WLM is horrible with all its adds and extra crap that's not needed, its like spam through instant messenger.

By the way you CAN see your buddies display pictures in the contact list in Pidgin, click buddies > show > buddy details. Also a few plugins for pidgin too! I don,t mind Miranda and Trillian either, any of these alternatives beats Windows live messenger any day!

i used to be a heavy gaim/pidgin user, but than i compared the memory usage in windows against miranda and after some tweaks miranda is so much better and A LOT more light weight, but pidgin is still good for linux and adium is basically pidgin for os x

Yes earlier msgplus versions used to run as a seperate process and was a resource hog, but now its integrated in to msnmsgr.exe.

My windows live messenger 8.5 with msgplus + stuffplug 3.5 uses totally 5.5 mb and explorer uses 10 mb.

Thats pretty ok for a system running windows Vista

You are right about the process, but I don't think that Windows Live Messenger would take that little RAM on first load. Mine loads (with plus) at 20MB without signing in, and raises to 72MB when signed in. This is on XP of course so it may be different with Windows Vista. Explorer stands at 20MB for me.

There is a reason why my messenger take so little memmory. There is an option in stuffplug 3.5 called memmory flusher. its an option that flushes messengers used memmory and keeps overall memmory usage low. Try it :)

Pidgin actually supports 15 protocols:

AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Google talk(XMPP), Yahoo, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Group Talk, MySpaceIM, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime; as of version 2.3.1.

The only thing i don't like about pidgin is that it currently has no voice or video support, @ least not with AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Yahoo, & MSN (the only protocol i use).

I've never heard of Miranda, but im going to check it out.
