Billy Taylor could do, and did, everything. And an immediately recognizable individual swinging, loping style and touch. Shamefully underrated and bypassed. His forward beat meshes well with Mingus. Later he would usually go to Earl May on bass. The drums are almost inaudible and unnecessary.
The Discography by Lindenmaier gives as issues Royal Roost RLP406 = Felsted (GB) EDL87009 = Blue Star (F) BLP 6815. Bootleg Alto AL714 issues two tracks: "I'm Beginning Too See The Light" & "What Is This Thing Called Love". Recording Date given by Ruppli as 11/6/1951 and by Lindenmaier as autumn 1952.
It's Bebop.(East Coast style) It punches forward with lots of "gusto!" Cool Jazz is more like California...or West Coast Jazz...more "laid back." See...even then musicians had the East Coast & West Coast thang goin' on! Ha haaa! ..glad you want to know.....to check out W coast ... look at Jerry Mulligan YT. E coast check Monk- Mingus- Parker.- Gellespie... BOP!
Most definitely not cool. Cool is really chill and relaxed (Very cool Lester young sound), and typically doesn't swing as hard as this. Cool jazz is not that afro-american in style. This is bop. Bop is usually very fast, virtuostic. The good thing is that you can have alot of variety and take aspects, mix match and you effectively add alot of yourself in the mix, and it never conforms to one specific genre...unless it's so what or donna lee because those basically defined the genre;.
@triggerhappy678 :this would be more of a be-bop feel. For an example of cool jazz, check out Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album. John Coltrane plays sax on that album if I remember correctly. :)
Anyone know if this was ever released on an album? I've checked Billy's site and did some searches but didn't find anything solid. I'd love to own this as an album!
god... billy taylor... so good

I was hoping for a video but this is rare and priceless music, no pictures needed. Practically a whole set's worth.

Im confused, would this be classed as cool jazz or bepbop? im trying to learn which ones which.
triggerhappy678 2 years ago
Listen to ALL music on it´s own merits without trying to classify it by catagory.
Hear it for what it is and not what it is called.
mrmolinodelahoz 2 years ago
Don't class it, don't even call it "Jazz" because R&B singers sometimes do this one...just dig it and pass it on...

@triggerhappy678 - Just listen to the music! Those terms are made up by critics who usually don't know very much about music....

Why Hentoff would compare Billy Taylor to the prim, ladylike Marianne Moore I'm not sure. Maybe he thought the alliteration of m's sounded jazzy.

It hasn't been released, but perhaps if there are enough people who wish to hear and buy, it will be.

Nice music, JVG, thanks for posting this. I guess it's too late now to change it, but the drummer's name is Marquis Foster, not Marcus.

love henthoff's introduction! no-one would even think of talking about jazz in those terms nowadays
