  • any jazzy similar songs like this??

  • "And to the wind go so many dreams

    That you had inside

    Now you're just a memory

    Burning in my mind"

amazing ... amazing ... amazing lyrics!!!

  • One of the greatest songs ever!

  • "HOW COULD YOU LET LOVE PASS YOU BYYYYYYYY????!!!"

  • Search "Mariah Carey - Christmas Time Is In The Air Again" if you want to listen to Mariah singing a similar jazzy number.

  • Mariah's R&B/Soul/Jazz-influenced songs, is her best songs! I love that side of her!

  • I WANT THIS MARIAH BACK!!!!! T_T

  • I love timeless songs and this is one of them!

  • A true classic. Timeless...

  • This is it, Mariah's best vocal performance ever. Is there a live version of this somewhere ?

  • Thanks for changing the settings for phones! The way she sings makes me wanna cry.

  • can you change the video to be allowed to play on phones and other devices. Please and thank you. Its such a wonderful song.

  • @robbie079 done ;)

  • people change guys...especially after 20 YEARS!! but she is still making good music, you guys just arent listening to the right songs..

  • You may not like how she looks but saying her voice is not good just makes you look stupid.

  • Excuse me, but is this vocal real? My ears have to be hearing incorrect music. It's unbelievable.

  • Former Journey drummer Steve Smith played drums in the background of this song. (I could just barely hear them.)

  • I dedicate this to my fiancee who died 5 weeks ago. 41 is no age to die at. It's left me heart broken. This song says it all. We both love Mariah. xxxxx R.I.P Dave xxxxxxxxxxx

  • To Snape. R.I.P.

  • @Rikafede82

it shouldn't be. have you heard christmas time is in the air again, off her 2010 album?

  • into the wind

  • I love the message of this song, but I didn't like that you could barely hear/understand what she was saying and I had to read the lyrics to actually find out what was going on in the song. She should have used a clearer tone in my opinion :/ Still love this though now that I know what it's about :)

  • @seansocheap i think it's more like she used this subtle whispering vague tone to add extra mood to this song..but yeah, it's not clear, though

  • I bought this album just a few weeks before my father died. I had listened to the whole album, but didn't pay attention to this song at first. After he died, I had a dream, and this song was playing in it. In the dream, my father was walking around a dark house with me. My mother and sisters were in the only bright room in the center of the house, and my father was showing me things that were important, both of us knowing he would soon die--only later did I realize where the song came from.

  • @ernest671 She;s not trash. Maybe you should listen to her actual albums and not just the singles, not tryin to be rude or mean but that's a false statement. If you don't like her then fine, but don't ruin a song like this with a degrading commnent like that please and thankyouer. have a nice day:)

  • She used to be awsome

  • @Rikafede82 it shows how versatile this woman is!

  • I remember this song!! (。・艸-。)-☆

  • I love this song! I'll eventually cover this song. But for now take a look at some of my recent covers: I don't wanna cry, Without you, Vision of Love, Emotions. People say I sound similar to Mariah, Leona, Kelly Clarkson, and a few others. I guess it depends which songs I'm singing. I really love Mariah's songs though, so I'll be recording more of them soon. If you have any requests, let me know, I have most of them on karaoke/instrumental now! :)

  • @CrystalMurphyMusic emotions? u dare cover emotions? lol...is it a tricky way to get attention by saying ppl u cover emotions?

  • @kelvinpyaeko Pardon? I already covered it and most people say I did a great job especially for only singing it twice. :)

  • @CrystalMurphyMusic lol at high notes! shouldn't b covering a song, which is only meant to b sung by mc...

  • @kelvinpyaeko Haha. I totally forgot about this girl. Just let her be man. =)

  • @razzp lmao hahah you caught that

  • her vocals are supreme in this song

  • @Rikafede82 wow i know she is disappoiniting

  • This is some of the best singing I've ever heard.

  • @Rikafede82

The sad thing is, Mariah clearly is NOT the same person she was when she sang this. She traded in class and elegance for a sex-obsessed image and it's a damn shame.

  • @FaytLinegod well she had to change sometime...

  • @SholaMind21

I don't object to an artist changing their image normally, but Mariah took it too far. There's no substance or soul to her music anymore.

  • @FaytLinegod I agree. She was too preoccupied about her image rather than her voice. "Rainbow" is the earliest evidence of this. Although I enjoy "Daydream" and "Butterfly" (this is when she left her pop/gospel sound and transitioned into RnB/Hip-Hop), her first two albums were her best and I don't think she has topped them since!

  • @FaytLinegod If you look beyond the image (the outfits & everything), you would see that she really is the SAME person at the core. A lot of people are so close-minded & shallow that they truly fail to recognize this. People put Mariah & other female artists in this small box, expecting them to always be a certain way (this is what her management team tried to do); not allowing them to branch out and express themselves fully. Take the time to listen to her 'newer' songs i.e. I Wish You Well.

  • @FaytLinegod She is the same person her music style changed

  • @Rikafede82 ME TOO

  • 4:01- 4:10 make me so sad. I can't explain it." It's almost too intense to verbalize".

  • minuto 3:22 en adelante... sublime!

  • really hard to understand *strains to listen* pretty...but hard to discifer...

  • give her credit for choosing a great tune...she's still a very limited singer to my ear....nothing close to Carmen or Ella

  • @zu0832 But I believe that she could have been a good jazz singer if she had gone that route. This is a beautiful song. And the background music is just out of sight. Man I love this music!

  • In my estimation "Emotions" was an absolutely awesome album, one of her best!!!

This was the last track on it - BEST TIL LAST, WHAT A SONG!!!!!!!!

  • @Rikafede82 it shows her versatily....amazing isn't it?

  • Such a beautiful song. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

  • from time to time, i just wonder if she ever thinks of this song and what would come to her mind if so...what a different artist she'd be nowadays if she had continued with this incredible style...i've been in love with this song from the very moment i listened to it for the first time back in the 90s

  • @javicente2010 christmas time is in the air again has a similar vibe to this style...check it out

  • Mariah Carey you b---- having songs like this and you refuse to sing them live ...

  • Mariah had lost her way somehow somewhere...In the business

  • @Lambertissimo no she lost her self to the expectations of many like you and business wise she made mostly wise decisions because unfortunately music like this song which is amazing is not mainstream and doesn't sell to well during this and the past generation.

  • @JPhillippeMusic yes I know but it's so sad

  • @Lambertissimo the song you mean or mariah loosing herself? if its the latter then don't blame her, blame the standards of the industry and the demand of those who purchase music...she's just trying to be relevant, not really a crime.

  • @JPhillippeMusic With singing like this, she really didn't have to. She has waay too much talent. Just listen o this song and be honest. She would have been a dynamic jazz singer. Russ Freeman would have seen to that.

  • @IRONMANHONDO87 She made her claim to fame with vocal acrobatics with all that range...that and repititive cliche singing...by comparison, listen to Sarah Vaughn and you'll hear a singer with all the chops in the world weave artisrty in a song.

  • @zu0832 As good as Ms. Carey is, she could never compare to Sarah Vaughn. I won't dare make that mistake.

  • @IRONMANHONDO87 i understand with you and I agree but this type of music isn't what's mainstream and commercial. if she wouldn't have gone the pop route, she won't be the Mariah Carey she is now with so many sales, number ones, and such an extensive fan base...sticking with this type of music while great would've made her one dimensional. and BTW she said she might do a jazz album anytime soon.

  • @JPhillippeMusic The mainstream is the reason why we have the type of non-talent singers that are out there now. Anita Baker did just fine being one dimensional. As well as Whitney Houston and Dionne Warrick.

  • @IRONMANHONDO87 Whitney Houston is not one-dimensional she was pop music. Dione Warrick was UK, Canada, and US, not really that international. Plus Mariah being an R&B singer doesn't mean she's bad at what she does..it just doesn't cater to your particular preference...It is what it is...and yes I agree about the non talented singers but Mariah mainstream was fully to her advantage and she really made history.

  • @JPhillippeMusic The fact that Whitney only did pop is proof that she was one dimensional musicially. She didn't want to do a duet with her then husband because they sang in different genre of music. There is one singer that could have gone mainstream but remained true to their roots, Lalah Hathaway. She's not mainstream, but she is catching on. Her talent is making a way for her without the pap. The same with Jill Scott, Chrisette Michele, Eric Benet, and D'Angelo. True artists that are known.

  • @IRONMANHONDO87 I'm sorry but I won't discuss this with you further because the label "true" artist is very subjective..and it shows you know a lot about Whitney to call her one-dimensional. She's done Pop, R&B, Gospel, and even Opera. Who knows why she didn't duet with her husband she still is who she was and was an amazing vocalist in any type of instrumental she was given. SO PLEASE no worth in discussing this since it is what it is, past is past and I don't agree with you at all.

  • @JPhillippeMusic But we can still be friends. I don't expect everyone to share my views. That is why there are sights like this. We're just sharing ideas and opinions. I'm not a big Whitney Houston fan. But I repsect what she did for music. And besides, you just reminded me that she did sing gospel. We just love music, that's all.

  • @IRONMANHONDO87 oh i love music more than you can imagine, and of course we can be friends...it would be boring if people agreed on everything right?

  • @JPhillippeMusic You've got that right. It would be boring if we all thought the same thing.

  • @IRONMANHONDO87 Didnt Whitney do a song with Bobby Brown called "Something In Common" ?

  • @Rikafede82

    Lol me too

  • this song makes me sad.....

  • Well guys... I think that people branch out. There are other genres out there folks. I like HipHop, love R&B; but Jazz is my love. Have you ever thought that maybe she really wants to break in to the Jazz scene; or who knows, maybe it's her true love, and she wanted to share it with her fans. I think she would be wonderful. What she did with this song was absolutely beautiful. I think this girl has a lot to give yet.

  • what r songs like this one

  • She sounds soo amazing singing jazz!

  • someone know the name of the composer of the original one ??

    thanx ! :)

  • love u mariah :P

  • oh my god she is GREAT here

words can not describe how great

  • It's such a shame she never preformed this live. I wish she still sang like this.

  • ok what's so unknown people?

Mariah loves Sexy look and this isn't her

    don't you get it

she looooooooooves hip hop, rnb etc

  • she's really great! i really love her low voice..so amazing!!! yeah...

  • holy shit this song is so moving and powerful i seriously got goosebumps. wow She was and i think still is very talented. its not her fault she's singing different she has to in order to stay relevant in the market.

  • Two weeks ago, Peter Lopez, husband of Catherine Bach, was found dead outside their home in Los Angeles. Apparently, it was suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. (Catherine Bach used to play Daisy Duke on, "The Dukes of Hazzard." Peter Lopez was a music attorney for Michael Jackson.) Together, they were parents of two daughters, Sophia (born in 1996) and Laura (born in 1999). So it is with great respect this should be dedicated to the memory of Peter Lopez.

  • This song is sooooooo classy! One of the highest of Mariah's career. Lately I have listened to it a lot, 'cause it makes me think of life and the way it's so misterious... I wish she do songs like that nowadays, but I know it's just a dream...

  • This song makes me think of my father, who died far to young. Love this song, it's so true.

  • She loose some regions of her voice and the rap killed the nuances of her interpretation...It's so sad that she changed her style...

  • I used to hate this song when I was little then I hit my teens and found a new love for real music. Some music takes age to appreciate. And the best part is in another 20 years it will still be a great song.

  • @Jrcrave .... wow that was exactly the same thing that happened to me :)

  • it's called Versatality... Mariah has Obsessed on her new album, and she still has songs like these on her new album, called, "Languishing" and an old school 40s vibe song on her new album called, "It's a wrap" She still got it.. She don't have to prove anything anymore...

But you should really check out

    Languishing and It's a wrap.

and she has a new song called "Imperfect" very old school Mariah too.. that comes out in March

  • who was this song written for ? who died so young ?? Mariah is still a class act in Todays day, She has to stay with the times, nobody lives in the past, well some do, but with her , she makes more dough keepin up with the times!

  • It was written for a friend of hers that died at such a young age.

I agree, Mariah keeps up with times.. She is marvellous.

    Dan.

  • @Tyra4111 Its not that anybody wants to live in the past..... music from before was real music with real singers with real life messages that many people relate to ...... nowadays everyone thinks they can sing and all they talk about is sexual stuff! No real message there!

  • mariah carey really used to be classy now she went from a "Class Act" to a "trash act" im upset wish the old mariah would live on but whatever

  • When she first starting recording, mariah wasn't allowed to be herself. I don't think a woman expressing her sexual side, whether in clothing or attitude is trashy, especially since she's never done anything majorly crazy like driven drunk or anything like that. I'm glad Mariah is who she is, past, present, ad future.

  • I agree 100%. Since 1997 we got to see Mariah being herself, but some people were like 'shes changed' and didn't like her new image although that's the way she always saw herself. They tried to make her too mature too young, with the effect that she later went the other way and her music sounded 'younger'. I like both her old and new music and the diversity in sound, image and attitude is what makes it interesting for me.

  • Mariah, you've written lovely songs and now they are timeless. I really respect your vocals. This song is one of my favorites. It makes me cry a little bit, but that's all right. I enjoy listening to you sing in lower tones. Very pretty.

  • She sung obsessed to diss eminem, she has some good songs on her 2010 album but they dont compare to these! :D

  • patti labelle didnt sing like her either, CONIEJOLA

  • Nice. I can't believe I just heard this song for the first time a few days ago on someone's Ipod. You'd be hard pressed to find any material like this on any of her recent works.

  • she sounds like aretha here....nice.:D

  • thank you RJJ12! I didn't know this. Sad...

I'm like you I'd like to hear not only the hits live!

    :)

  • Hey this is really good, I love this song especially keith jarret's version

  • I wonder if there is any unreleased music from her first two albums! I would love to hear the tracks that didn't make that cut!

  • one of the best songs by her ever x

  • RIP Cody

  • To me, "the wind" and "vanishing" are Mariah's best songs. I wonder how she looks back on the song "the wind" today... if she likes it or not (there are songs from the beginning of her career that she "denies" today "I don't wanna cry" for instance...) She often mentions "vanishing", but I never heard her mention "the wind". She never sang it live. It would really be torrific ! She has to sing the 2 songs. Why always sing the hits and the famous tunes (just don't get that!). :-)

  • She did mention it in an interview around 93 when she was promoting Music Box stating it was written for her friend that died in a car crash. Like you I would love to hear her speak more on her album cuts from her earlier albums. I agree she should sing these songs in her concerts, we have heard the hits one too many times and would love a little change in the set list. I love this song.

  • Her sister is still alive.

  • absolutely beautiful;makes me cry everytime I hear it!!!

  • love it! intensely moving...

  • This is one of her best tracks ever; I echo the sentiments of some here that she should have recorded/should record more tracks with this kind of feeling. Her voice suits this kind of music well.

  • wonder who's death she is singing about!

    perfect song!

  • sooooo emotional song ¡¡¡ i lov this song

  • Lovee this song

  • RIP Selene

  • this makes me think of MJ

  • This song reflects how I felt when I first learned about the death of River Phoenix in 1993. I'm pretty sure many of Heath Ledger's fan's felt the same way I did when they first learned about this death.

  • i read that she wrote this song about one of her friends who died in a drunk driving accident.

  • fav songs of mariah ? too many too mention !

  • Mariah sounds great no matter what song she sings :P

  • Beautiful song! Thanks for posting it, llrocks, although it is not a "jazz standard." A standard is a song that is already well-known and has usually been interpreted by multiple musicians. As you said, Carey wrote the song. I completely agree she should do more like this. It fits her voice so much better than hip-hop.

  • No, Mariah did not write the song; she wrote the lyrics only. My late father, jazz pianist and composer Russ Freeman, wrote this tune back in the 1950's for the Chet Baker Quartet. It's been covered by dozens of different artists since then. So, this song would be considered a standard by any definition.

My dad received a nice chunk of royalties from Mariah's version, though, so he was delighted to let her write her own lyrics. RIP, Dad!

  • @beadbop My apologies, I stand corrected. Is there a recording of the original, or of earlier versions? I couldn't find any. Maybe you could post if you have one. This is a beautiful song.

  • @malvavisco10 Ah, yes! The original instrumental version of "The Wind," with my father on piano, from the "Chet Baker and Strings" album, can be found at: youtube dot com slash watch?v=vPE2SPN3kGE

And I admit my bias -- the original is still my favourite version! :)

  • She wishes she could still sing like this live.

Too bad she sold out with her poppy songs that nobody will remember after six months.

  • Suit yourself, you aggrivated cunt!

  • Excuse me?

  • I agree!!!

  • mmm sorry but We belong together is classy, so I dont understand what u mean ("with her poppy songs that nobody will remember after six months").

  • @mcdamian17 song of the decade

  • Thanks for the info about the song's conception, it was very interesting (y)

  • SHE IS THE BEST!!! :)

  • Yes She's the BEST =)

  • This is one of my favourite songs ever of this talented multi-faceted woman.

I wish she did a Jazz influenced album or even a Jazz Standard album for a change.

    I miss the "old" Mariah.

But I guess in order to remain relevant as a pop star she needs to keep it commercial.

    Sad.

  • but not all her songs are commercial, she always has like one song that connects to each individual, like on her recent CD. theres a song called, "I wish you well" or from her recent movie sountrack called, "Right to dream song"

  • It's sad, that the public won't hear "the Wind", subltle Invitation, I Wish You Well, or Mine Again, great songs, Mariah's singles have to be radio friendly.

after 15 years having chart sucess is more important than releasing quality music to the record labels. They control what is released

  • of course, i agree with u...

if you know her music well, then you ll know that she not only record friendlyradio-songs...

she has the deepest songs ive ever heard in my life...

but people wouldnt worth those great records...

im sorry if i made a mistake in my grammar , im mexican...:)

  • to shut Perez Hilton, and the haters up, she needs to stand at a Piano and sing the hell out of I WISH YOU WELL, don't focus on her clothes or her pushed put ta-ta's, or her hair, or the fan blowing her her. Just stand at the Piano and SING.

I think she's forgotten that's all the fans want.

  • Totally with you. She is so overproduced and "fake" now. I still love her she does some great songs but she focusses on looking "good" and producing "young" music too much, she just needs to let her voice do the talking.

I love this song she sings it perfectly. :)

  • i must admit i LOVE "I Want To Know What love is", it's very Fly like a bird, if it's over and I wish you well.......it grew on me ...i went to sleep woke up..and was....like...i want to hear that song again.

  • I don't think I could choose a favourite song I love butterfly, fly like a bird, everything fades away, emotions and I do really like I want to know what love it - a lovely rendition. Couldn't choose :P

  • like "i wish u well", slipping away, Everything fades away, do u think of me, all alone in love, With u i'm born again (live w/John Legend)

  • I don't know what Mariah is doing but she's not protecting her voice. THE Voice!! She's only 40, I believe. That is just way too soon for her voice to be "changing". Patti Labelle STILL sounds the same as when she first sang "Lady Marmalade"! Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin as well. They continue to protect their gift! I almost cried when I heard Whitney Houston's new CD. The continuous smoking totally change (ruined) her voice. It's so deep now. She doesn't sound like Whitney anymore!

  • She is not lost her voice, but she just lost her energy , now when she sing live, her face look like so tired. she should doing sport or something to make her energy very good in sthe stage.I believe she still that voice..

  • @falsetable She lost class. She sang music she liked and felt identified with. Now she sings what the people likes, she sings music that sells more, but sacrificed class, quality, feeling... SEX SALES.

  • @franktonio actually i've seen mariah saying in many interviews that the music she does now is what she really likes to sing. she likes r&b and hip hop better than this. but i agree with you, she lost her class in many ways...

  • @marianacarey Thing is It ain't R&B, nor Hip Hop. It lacks the lyrical art of Hip Hop, the melody of Pop and the Soul of R&B. "Hip Pop" - dysfunctional cover up to me.

Logic says she's a Pop artist marketing in a bad industry. Lost her voice and drive. Relies on auto-tune and struggles to hold a note. Voice fails so she tones it down and whispers. Marketing she does well, but a dead industry is game over. It doesn't sell.

Either way this is what she'll be remembered for, and it's great. =)

  • @MikeTuinstra The "Whispering" is a highly difficult technique that she does VERY well. Her voice isn't like it was 20 years ago when this was recorded, time affects your body in more ways than just appearances. As far as her music of today's albums, she does what will keep her records selling, and that's singing more of a variety of today's stuff mixed with what she's done in the past. Sad thing is she wouldn't make any money singing this in today's industry, and THAT you can thank MTV for!!!!

  • @matthewharris065 Difficulty doesn't matter, the end result does. The current industry is clearly a fraud, and therefore not selling. Those who associate with it will be put out of business. People have moved to independence to start a new. This is where the money's at, this is what we call music. If you can't cope with that you shouldn't be in.

  • @MikeTuinstra I didn't say that I agreed with what's going on by any means, but the FACT is that she wouldn't make as much money off of this as she would "Touch My Body" which is a crime!!! Real music isn't appreciated like it used to. I mean, turn on the radio and listen to Ke$ha or even "artists" that once were great, listen to what the music has been degraded to. Hell, listen to rap of today, there's NO soul or meaning to the lyrics, it's all a bunch of senseless flow.

  • @matthewharris065 Understood, but it doesn't make sense, does it? My point exactly; a fraud. A crap song just relies on promo. Its income is hype buyers. The problem is that frauds force their songs in the media, while actual substance gets denied for. Easy money for the incapable, but the economy suffers and folds. Songs go to #1 solely by airplay. It means good marketing, and nothing else.

    img704.imageshack.us/img704/8803/chartmusictop.gif

Mariah's numbers go like that as well. Doesn't sell.

  • @matthewharris065 truth. Being able to maintain those whispers is damn near impossible for as long as she does in one song.

  • @SERTYG What's done in the studio is they fuse notes together. She most likely cannot hold them long anymore but editing them (2 separate notes) to make 1 cohesive long note can be done easily. She really can't do it anymore. Unless she kicks the alcohol addiction

  • @XforeverlongingX are you that delusional? just look up ANY ANY ANY live performance and you see long notes.

  • @SERTYG They are lip sync'd to pre-recorded tracks, if you're referring to we belong together i stay in love etc

  • @XforeverlongingX i like how mariah haters are so delusional they make up any possible excuse to throw shade at Mariah..................... they are not lipped, and if you must know listen to her perform the grammy's in 2006 WHERE THERE IS NO LIP SYNCING ALLOWED!

she doesn't have an alcohol addiction....shes clearly pregnant and she ain't drinking. you are so stupid.

  • @XforeverlongingX Her nodules are the main problem.

  • @MikeTuinstra well, you should get your facts straight.

she used autontune on 2 songs.

Obsessed: it was a pop/fun song that went along with the rest of mainstream radio. She didn't need to for the lyrics, she decided to put it on bc of the sound you get from putting it on.

and look at ANY of her BRAZIL concert songs. they are mindblowing. she has lost no voice, no drive, and she can still hold any note she wants.

  • I think you're wrong about her voice. She can definitely still hold a tune - and beautifully. About the whispy voice -- it just the genre.

  • @MikeTuinstra why complain about mariah carey when there are worse singers out there (we know who they are) who are selling wayyy more than mariah these days. Can they sing like mariah? no. Even close? no. Yet they're making millions.

Mariah was actually one of those singers who was made famous because of genuine, raw talent. You're acting as if auto-tune made her the legend that she is.

  • @Da1uLyK I wish I could vote up for you a 108492364 times.

  • @MikeTuinstra well, what do you expect, she's an alcoholic. Her voice is shot and she looks ridiculous with her fake porn star boobs

  • @franktonio actually it's the other way around

  • the same to me!

  • "Mine Again" is my fav on "The Emancipation of Mimi" It reminds me early Mariah when she gave a song her all and just let go without holding back! I wish she had made a video for it. I do have to say that something is off with her voice now and it has nothing to do with aging.

  • I was 11 when Emotions came out and I heard this song for the first time. It really stood out to me as different from her other stuff and special, and it's always been my favorite song that she's sung. Too bad she doesn't like singing in this style... D:

  • i wish i knew every single mariah carey song. is there anyone that knows every song?

  • i do. let me know which ones.

theres one called, CLOSE MY EYES.

  • I do unless for some reason there's a really rare one that I've never heard of before.

  • have you heard of "Flowers for alfred roy" a song deciated and sung about her father.
