We just celebrated our 27th year of legal marriage and if we make it to 30 years, I would love to dance slowly with my best friend/lover/husband to this beautiful song.
Brings back memories of our wedding back in 1975! We are now working on our 37th year of marriage. We headed God's advice to "Never let the sun go down on your anger" and also to "Love one another as I (GOD) have loved youSince then at other family weddings they include this song for my husband and I to dance to.
Yes this song is about love, but it also comforts me. No one who has known love...true love, in whatever form that may take, doesn't escape from also feeling it's slings and arrows.
I'll be perfoming this song on vocals and guitar for a very special friend's wedding tomorrow, June 26th, 2011. This Wedding Song is so special that I plan to sing it with reverence in honor of the Lord, and Paul Stookey who wrote it for his fellow guitarmate Peter Yarrow's wedding.
Sadly, once upon a rainy morning in the '70s, I turned on the radio of my old Toyota Corona to sign the divorce papers on my wife (Who had been M.I.A. for about a year.)
and this song had just begun playing.
I listened to the whole song in tears.
Later, I actually met Paul Stookey... but, I didn't mention that horrible memory.
@wdchefdave56 Sorry about that memory. This song really does bring tears to your eyes. It can be beautiful if your situation is right...but it can also be terribly sad, like in your case. God is always with us though. Through every struggle, battle, trial, tempation... He remains true. Thank You God for that.
@Banged147Chicks OK, will give C&T a 78....though her singing is a straight up 90 ("this troubador" suggests you don't have a choir backing her). Stookey a 99 (Only 'cause it was a 100, God would have had to take him the moment it was over to leave it perfect!)

Play this every anniversary, and there would BE no divorce!
the capt. & tennille version was the first version of this song that i ever heard...& it made me decide right then & there {over 30 years ago!} that it would be the song played at my wedding!
& 3 years ago, when i married for the first time at the age of 45, i did have this played: the 'known' version was our processional, & noel paul stookey's ORIGINAL {& not well known} version was our recessional!
I will be performing this song with piano live at my own wedding, Dec 19th 2010. The Lord has blessed me with many talents I will no longer bury them, but instead I will let them shine for His glory. Amen
@arjames91 I love this song. A friend played this on guitar and sang it at one of my weddings. Hope you videotaped yours, with you singing, and will post it. Is there's a link to it? I would love to see it!
@psychodelicide I agree - this should be at every wedding. My wife and I had this song done in sign language at our wedding. It was absolutely beautiful!

This was sung at my wedding by two men who sounded exactly like this. It was a very moving moment.

I still love the idea of the song.
Those who can do it ... DO IT!
And, God be with you.

@Banged147Chicks EEK! (Not fair; I actually should listen to it, first.) But it's hard to think of anyone else outdoing this.
