I always loved this car and would like to own one one day. I never understood why they reffered to the car as the "American Eagle". I think it confused buyers. There was the Rambler American and it was made in America and by American Motors which went by the name of AMC some days and American Motors others. I think they always confused people...damn marketers!
they can be had for less than $1000. I got mine for $800, running and driving, but of course with the problems a 24 year old car has, worn hinge pins, emissions system removed by annoying previous owners, ect.
"AMC" by that time made consumers think "Pacer" and "Gremlin" etc. Calling it the "American Eagle" was an attempt at a fresh start in terms of brand identity. But you are right, that did get confusing to some people.
I remember that ad.Its sure a shame that you cant really say that today...Depend on Eagle...its now Depend on Subaru,Audi,VW,Mercedes,SUVs....yuk.Even though it was really a hyped up Hornet, the Eagle was something special, and today if I had to depend on an Eagle,I would still be proud.
ummm beg pardon...but how many people would have rather taken the mercedes in the garage. Plus how many people bought a mercedes and an AMC!
