How to test your phone line if you have no dial tone

Just having this problem now, but our NID lacks the test jack. We supposedly had the NID replaced when we moved in last year, but I guess they didn't get the hardware up to date. And our home line's issue is more time centered, as in it's down around 3am, to about sunrise, with the exception of right now, as it's just about 9pm. This is so strange...you never realize how important it is until you lose it.

some old houses dont have that NID set up, older houses only have 2 screw sockets thats holding up the wire into it coiled up one side red and the other side green.

Great video! I've only had to do this 10 times in the past 9 months because you people refuse to update my box which leaks and shorts out every time it rains. Too bad getting your service people to actually provide service isn't as easy as running this test.

No dial tone, ringer but still have DSL? Or you may have lost that as well.

Did you recently paint or spill liquid?

Paint or any liquid entering into a phone jack can cause a rerun of fibreroptic electricity running in the line; disrupting all phone lines. DSL may hold on one circuit till direct phone line is unplugged and replugged then signal can not be relocated.

-Instant fix-- cut--- phone line to that bad wall jack.

-Repair later with new wall jack and fresh tipped phone wires.

between the constant loud annoying hum on my phone line, the air plants and fungus growing on these antique decrepid phone lines. I have asked Embarq to fix them many times, and still they wont fix them without trying to charge me for the line repair, hoping I can get photos to the library to upload them, thanks to EMBARQ, i not only can NOT run a business from my computer but also have errors in my computer due to EXTREMELY rotten phone lines..and remain poor
