No snake, when "Soshu" would "beat us with the shinai" it was a good thing, lol! Used as a tool to push you threw the pain, so to speak. When u sit in zazen for extended periods your feet start to hurt. So sometimes the instructor would wack you on the shoulder to not concentrate on the pain in your foot. SHIGERU OYAMA was/is the greatest instrutor i have ever had. He took me to to japan twice, holland and england. Like my japanese father, OSU!!

When Mr. Shigeru Oyama Shihan lefted Kyokushin Mr. W. Williams Sensei went with him and joined World Oyama Karate didn't he? Mr. Joko Ninomiya left with his Sensei Mr. Hideyuki Ashihara Shihan when he formed Ashihara Karate. Then Mr. Ninomiya Kancho would found his own style called Enshin Karate plus sponsor the Sabaki Challenge.

Hitting the trainees with the shinai made them to self-initiate and force themselves to commit themselves when performing each and individual technique.

It may appear easy to the onlookers, but to generate an almost maximal force with each strike or kick, that requires a lot energy and commitment. Osu!
