I love any version of this show. It is so beautifully written . . . and it's always different depending on the actress playing the part . . . I think they have all been wonderful and unique in their own way . . . but I do love the Bette Midler version.
I didn't like Bette's version of Mama Rose. She does alot of mugging for the cameras rather than acting. Her Mama Rose was more of a caricature and her singing was very pitchy in alot of the numbers. They should have fixed it in the soundtrack. Not a good movie version. Roz Russell was a better movie Rose.
I think Gypsy is my all time favorite musical. I love the whole story. I love the songs, everything about it. Who says theres something wrong with being a strip teaser?
I cannot stand my classmates. I feel so left out at my school, everyone is singing rap songs and hip hop, while I stroll down the hallways singing songs from Gypsy, Chicago, or Wicked. This song is just....wonderful, no matter who sings it.
@thosegiirls ....Perfect because it's autotuned! Though, I do think that he did a good job. Nothing can beat Bette Midler though, or Ethel Merman.. She was pretty good too.
@ChrisFREAKINColfer I SO DO understand you! And don't think otherwise that this "You're listening to some of the greatest music ever written! They are listening to some crap, that nobody will know of in the next years! Wish ALL the very BEST!!
Some performers do one thing REALLY well.Bette's one woman concerts are perfection. It's what she was born to do.I just don't think she's a very good actress.Everything she does looks like she's channeling Sophie Tucker, and is always over the top.
hated this version when i first saw it, don't know why, love it now. but as much as i love bette, i didnt like her in the film.... ros nailed it for me, and made it a very tough act to follow (not saying her's is the only rose, just definitive for me).
Um, A little over the top. I've seen Bette give some good performances but this aint one of 'em. Rosalind Russell in the film version is,at least the screens best Momma Rose!
@TheGuillermo519 Screen acting is by its genre (camera moving, closeups) more naturalistic than theatrical, which requires broader actor projection as audience members are far flung & fixed seated & thus see less nuance; subtleties are mostly missed. Bette as Mama Rose is a little overmuch, but so were vaudeville and successful stage mothers. In this role (and this clip and her "Some People" number are all I've yet seen) and absolutely her magnificent singing on its cd Bette has the right stuff.
@JudgeJulieLit Your comment sounded ridiculously contrived. Rosalind Russell is charismatic but her voice ruins it for me. She sounds like a drag queen who's been smoking their entire life. Definitely not a fan. Not a big fan of Bette Midler either but her voice sounds like that of an angel compared to Russell's. I'd def take her over Russell's out-of-tune wailing. Again this is opinion. You enjoy your Russell; I'll enjoy my Midler.
@TheGuillermo519 The 1962 film Gypsy is the only so far. Roz was very good in it . . . her acting more interior than Bette's sometimes overexpressed, over-outed style. In particular Roz was stunningly effective in the film scene just after learning that June had eloped, where she sat for long minutes on the train station bench, not responding or even seeming to see Herbie or Louise, in a fixed gaze seeming traumatized; then suddenly emerging from her trance with ebullient plans for a new act.
@T3hR3dQu33n Wait...so just because I'm a glee fan, I can't stand this? Uhm, I knew about this song far before Chris Colfer did a version of it. I have BOTH on my iPod, thank you very much. That is a stereotype I suppose. I'm a hardcore Gleek but it has to take the actor/actress A LOT of effort and talent to make them convince me that their version is better than the original, and I like the original better than Glee's version, even though Chris was absolutely amazing in it, as so is Bette.
@T3hR3dQu33n What does being a Glee fan have to do with anything? I love Glee and I am a HUGE Chris Colfer fan, but I still love this version better than the one he did. You're just being prejudiced.
This is by far the best performance of this song to me. I'm not even a fan of Bette Midler's voice. Her voice isn't "pretty" but I can't even think of anyone off the top of my head who's voice and sound and charisma is so perfect for the stage. Brilliant performance. Brilliant.
@Omritable In this performance (comic scenes and tragic) as Mama Rose Bette brings out deepest ironies of emotion and life force that in the film Roz Russell . . . well, perhaps had best done in her prior film Picnic as the frustrated old-maid schoolteacher. Roz played Rose more naturalistically, decorous with the greater naturalism of film, and thus her singing of "Some People" segued more casually from, and just seemed to continue the conversation she had with her father in his parlor.
@praverpralereouvir Geez, its not even your property, you don't own it. You may have made the video but that means nothing if you own 0% of its content.
i kinda like the glee version a little better. this version i feel like bette is screaming and yelling the song. it sounds like she's hurting her chords the way she sings it. i dont know. maybe it's me...
I dont know what alot of people are on about.... this is brilliant !! Bette is amazing and her role as rose in gypsy was fantastic best person for it !!!!!
Bette's singing is really shakey in "Gypsy." It should have been the thunder of the gods, but even her usual wonderful acting is all over the place. Well, so was Patti LuPone's for that matter. There has to be a fresh way to approach the role of Rose. Tyne Daly sure was good.
@unclealand it boils down to personal preferences. i saw bette in concert around the time this tv version came out and she closed her first act with this and it was unbelievable. brought the hosue down. "i'll never forget it ya know.."
@Barbaraplease Yeah, she was great in every tour I saw. But that wasn't the subject, was it? The topic was Bette Midler's interpretation of Rose. Stay with us a minute, Barbaraplease. Interpretations of an established role are not apples and oranges. Yes, we love Bette's concerts, we love her in other movies, but her work in "Gypsy" was under-directed and not focused. We wanted something fresh, something besides Merman. It is one of the few times Midler let us down.
Like any card carrying self respecting gay man I love Better Midler, but this performance is just borderline obnoxious. She simply doesn't have the vocal chops to pull this off. Barbra Streisand, being such great friends with the late Roz Russell and Bette; it's really surprising to hear that she is apparently very close to inking a deal playing Rose in the big new remake of Gypsy, especially when both versions were so critically well rec'd. This is gonna be interesting!
...Wow. When she opened her coat my jaw dropped! I've always seen Bette on the heavier side and never thought she was slimmer, but DAMN did she have a body! Like hour glass! Wish mine was like that!
