haha, I just found 17 cd-r:s that I had burned about 6 years ago when I was 11... hilarious :D anyways, only one of them doesn't play well (rather because of scratches than aging)
i noticed recently a dvd-r (8x white faced printable traxdata ritek go5 brand burned at 4x speed) had a weird looking cloudy dispersment on the data side.. it is no longer readable
i'm working on a migration plan to get the rest of my dvds onto hard disk drives.. optical media is bullshit .. noticed a few of my discs of 2 to 3 years old have lots more pie and pif in recent quality tests.
anyone any idea on how long verbatim 16x silvers burned at 4x generally last?
Just get to Velociraptor 300GB drives and config them in RAID1... :P
When you use RAID1, data writes to both drives equally, thus you have a live backup of the drive you are running your OP on. So if one fails, then it will be as if nothing has gone wrong since the second drive will run as your main drive. :D
I wonder if any of you have heard of a term called "disc rot" -- something that I believe occurred mostly with older discs. May not be the case with newer ones. In any case, so long as the media lasts 10-20 years it should be perfectly fine. Because by then you'll have to take all the crap off your discs and put them on new medias of the future.
back up the back of your back up.. then back up the real back up but dont forget to back up the one you back up and lastly dont forget to back it up again just to be sure
Then backup all those backups and put half of them in a 3 foot thick steel box 1 mile under Antarctica wrapped in 300 feet of chains secured by 20 solid padlocks. Or is that going too far?
I got some aeone dual layer discs that only lasted about a week. I think I will be backing up on hard drives from now on since terabyte discs are getting cheaper.
I know but hard drives are more convinent than DVDs and also fairly reliable, epecially if they are well looked after. After loosing about 80gb of data on crappy DL discs I would rather spend my money on hard drives.
"computers in the future would not be able to read the disc" (paraphrasing). Not true Rodney. Just get Data to run it through the enterprises computer. like he did in the episode with the cryogenically frozen americans. BYW love your videos!
the ads only appear on videos released as "partner videos" this is good cos any bit of monies Rod can make from his reviews and Q/A's is probably a good means of income to maintain the forums and his equipment.
clicking the little x in the corner isn't too much of a hassle to help a guy out, right?
up to just a couple years ago, i had kept all my original CD's from the early 80's, when CD's first came out. they were just as new as the day i purchased them.. so that's gotta be like 26, 27 yrs or so. recently sold em all though, a spring cleaning awhile back and a move. imo, they should last several lifetimes atleast, as long as they're taken care of.
I done that but I still cant give him a thumbs down. This has actually baffled me since I started using Youtube but I have never discussed it with anyone or found out how to do it
i would say any USB storage is going to last, hard drive is part of it

Most of my CD's and DVD's (TDK) burned about 5-6 years ago are now unreadable.

What is the difference between CD/DVD-RW +/-?
SacreDro 3 years ago
- have slower write and/or read speeds than a +. When you buy blank media just go for + its pretty much the same prive as -
samd891 3 years ago
+ is a dual layer disc while - is single layer

How what raid config is that?
rtsjoe 3 years ago
I dont know, thats just what Rodney said he does.
look up raid configurations on wikipedia or something, it might say on there.
Lvaneede 3 years ago
Assuming you man the raid setup for backing up a harddrive, it's RAID1 where multiple drives all store exactly the same data.

true, I like Rodneys idea of backing up the backup hard drive
Lvaneede 3 years ago
Yes that would be the best solution, although it is expensive. A raid 1 setup with a couple of 500GB disks would be good for backups.

they are pressed discs, they are a different beast

and if u have a younger sister that will also reduce lifespan of cd/dvdmedia to 0 if she get's a hold of it
that's why i just keep everything stored on hard drives :)
