His toast was to end with "To The Queen" which was the conductor's cue... but he kinda mis-cued them by starting by saying he was making a toast to her majesty the Queen, which the conductor, very reasonably, thought was the orchestra's cue to begin, even though it came earlier than he expected. But, our President was not well enough briefed or he'd have known to abort the rest of his toast while the music played. Hopefully, Her Majesty undertood and forgave him.

I actually thought it was for emphasis to show further respect to the queen that they would play the anthem while he toasted her. It clearly was an act of not knowing the custom and not of disrespect. Fortunately, the queen is a woman of wisdom & dignity and Im sure she saw it for what it was.

You can hear the Queen actually prompt him to wait. I think she understood what happened. As for the room, the applaus at the end sound enthusiciastic and energetic not obligatory or forced.

Oops! Hey... he was nervous. His toast was to end with "To The Queen" which was the conductor's cue... but he kinda mis-cued them by starting by saying he was making a toast to her majesty the Queen, which the conductor, very reasonably, thought was the orchestra's cue to begin, even though it came earlier than he expected. But, our President was not well enough briefed or he'd have known to abort the rest of his toast while the music played. Hopefully, Her Majesty undertood and forgave him.

My Take: I think it’s clear many of us Americans are uneducated when it comes to royal protocols. Do correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the national anthem play when the queen stands at a formal event where she is about to be toasted?
Queen or not, I highly doubt any government official would speak over another countries national anthem out of respect. Obama didn’t pay attention to his crash course on royal protocol and how to act & behave when in the presence of the royal family court.
