Basch will be the main character of FFXII FORTRESS , and so will Asche . Will we get some BaschXAshe ? I think so . I love the FF series , and I played all of them ... But I loved FFXII , its my favorite. The world , the atmosphere , the characters (evengay vaan ) I think they should keep us living in this great world , FFXII is a story I dont think is over .

I forgot what they had said about how they somehow made a decision to have Vaan as the main, but they just did.. I think that the game would've had more meaning if Basch was the leading character, because in the new dissidia game, Gabranth is in it & that would've been great for the plot of Basch's part in dissida.
@TenshiTakahashi The original designer, Yasumi Matsuno, created the story with Basch and Ashe as the main characters. Square feared this would alienate their younger audience and forced the writing in of Vaan and Penelo as "main" characters. Matsuno objected to this and had to leave Square over it. This is the reason Vaan and Penelo are such empty characters with no development. The story isn't about them at all. Have to say this is one of my favorite ff's overall if you ignore those two.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who knows that Basch was supposed to be the main character. Man, If Yasumi Matusuno was still director, XII would've been twice as epic. Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story are some of the best games I've ever played. Thumbs up for Yasumi Matsuno.

he means at the last minute the makers decided to add someone to the story that the younger audience could relate to. but it was done very shodily. honestly vaan is the implied main character at the beginning but his background story was resolved very quickly when he made his peace with basch. "i forgive you" and "youre right you didnt kill my brother" after that he really loses his purpose. and penelo...i honestly think her usefulness ended after the tutorial on battle parties and gambits.

I agree...Granted, the younger guys tend to be a little more ambitious, but they run better as side characters. true heroes are usually older and can actually wield gigantic swords and wear badass armor. trying that on Vaan...would be bad. But i can see why they chose Vaan as the 'main' character. It told the story through the eyes of an observer, a young one, but an observer nonetheless. He never was really involved in anything, he was just involved through those who were extensions (i.e- Reks; his brother) But if we look at the game in whole, the main story is focused on Ashe, Basch, and Balthier/Fran and Vaan and Penelo are just there basically as tag alongs, people to tell the story.
I love this video! I had it on my favorites for awhile and I never got a chance to comment on it until now. Anyway, I agree that the FF series tends to lean towards the pretty/young boys as the main characters. I'm not sure about the FF 1-6 though, I came in at 7. Cloud is probably the 'oldest' main character , but considered he was stuck as an experiment for a couple years he's basically a 16 year old in a 22 body.
It would have been awesome to have Basch serve as the main character in 12

If this would have happened after Vaan met Basch, Final Fantasy XII would have been the best in the series. Also why doesn't Vaan were a shirt? I guess running though snow storms and lacking any sort of protecting from attacks is how Vaan rolls.
About my last comment, I thought FFXII was interesting and I wanted there to be more but they ended it too fast. It would have been great if it had 20 more hours of story and plot twists(not completely insane ones like Tidus) would have made it great!!!
It seems you and I have the exact same views about FFXII.
Vaan is certainly one of the worst designed protagonists of any Jrpg...and one of the most underdeveloped as well.
What I really missed in FFXII were "emotions," they were present at the beginning but it seemed to me that the moment the party was complete, the characters had turned into robots :P
FFXII definitely needed much more character interactions.

I felt the same way about how everyone lost their emotions, I seriously don't understand how Balthier could have barely reacted to his father's death.
Also another complaint was when Balthier said "I might have to sacrifice myself," or something of that nature. Could it have been a surprise or did you have to tell us? The game also felt liked they rushed the end a little too much.
I never ran around as Vaan during the course of the game, only Basch. I am glad to here he was originally the main character(The game would have been great if he was). Also if Vayne was just more evil and well developed(Kefka evil would have been perfect!). I was ultimately unsatisfied with the overall game due to lack of character development and the story wasn't all that good. Also add some plot twists(the game had too few). I think if they kept the original idea, it could have been amazing.
Cause, Vaan is JUST THERE, He has little interaction with the REAL story in my eyes, Except that he saw a fake ghost that he though was his brother. It pains me to see he has some decent stats
Originally, he was the main character for FFXII. They decided to change it because they didn't have much luck with other games that featured more mature, stoic male leads.
He sort of became more important towards the end with Gabranth and all. That did happen with Vaan though. At the end he really has very few lines and is ignored for the more interesting characters Ashe, Basch and Balthier.

Awesome video, but I couldn't imagine playing XII with Basch as the main character. I adored Vaan. His optimism was inspiring to me; he was someone I could relate to.
I didn't think Vaan was a very good main character, I mean his whole personal journey and background is done right when they go to resuce Penelo. Ashe, Balthier, and Basch had the most interesting stories that kept evolving throughout the game. Penelo's story was done after Balthier entered the picture and Fran's story was over once we got out of the Golmore Jungle. Balthier <3
That was the point though Vann was never really the main character as he didn't have anything to do with the story moving on. Vanns part of the story is more him and penello getting swept up in it.
very true, it's just disappointing that they call Vann the main character when the other members of the cast (besides Penelo) have a greater story and personality.
I personally liked Basch and Balthier, with Al-Cid and Larsa right up there with them, of the male cast; but I didn't have a problem with Vaan at all.
I also enjoyed FFXII the way it was, but then again... I didn't really pay attention to whom of the party was the "main" characters. They all played nice roles, and had their own great stories.

When you really look at each of the six main characters (except for Penelo cuz she's worthless) they all have their own story that you see play out over the course of the game, so much so that I dotn think it's incorrect to say that any one of them could be THE main character.
When I read that Basch was sopposed to be the main character I totally flipped. Basch is my most favorite character ever and I just can't believe they replaced him with such a... wussy girly boy. ): (I love Vaan, don't get me wrong lol)

Vaan was chosen to be the leading man probably because he shows the stories of the people through his eyes. If they had made say Basch the main character, we would have to see the story through the eyes of someone who wants honor -- we'd totally think differently of Balthier who is a dishonorable sky pirate.
Basch was apparently going to be the main character instead of Vaan.

He became my Zodiac Spear Juggernaut. XD
Vaan / Penelo didn't play into the story much past the Palace break-in.
Balther's biggest parts were the break-in and Draklor Lab on.
Fran was important because of the Viera Village and getting through the forest.
The game circulates mostly around Basch and Ashe, they're the ones who know all about the politics and areas and ruins and ancient lores
Glad people still know that.

Vaan was/wasn't the main character.
He had no real purpose in the story, from the middle to the end of the game..(where u fight that ice boss)-Ending

He sort of became more important towards the end with Gabranth and all. That did happen with Vaan though. At the end he really has very few lines and is ignored for the more interesting characters Ashe, Basch and Balthier.

Also, I notice a lot of people commenting on "main characters". It appeared to me that there was no main character in FFXII, that's one of the reasons I like it.

Awesome video, but I couldn't imagine playing XII with Basch as the main character. I adored Vaan. His optimism was inspiring to me; he was someone I could relate to.

This is really good.
I didn't think Vaan was a very good main character, I mean his whole personal journey and background is done right when they go to resuce Penelo. Ashe, Balthier, and Basch had the most interesting stories that kept evolving throughout the game. Penelo's story was done after Balthier entered the picture and Fran's story was over once we got out of the Golmore Jungle. Balthier <3

That was the point though Vann was never really the main character as he didn't have anything to do with the story moving on. Vanns part of the story is more him and penello getting swept up in it.

xD That video was priceless.
I personally liked Basch and Balthier, with Al-Cid and Larsa right up there with them, of the male cast; but I didn't have a problem with Vaan at all.
I also enjoyed FFXII the way it was, but then again... I didn't really pay attention to whom of the party was the "main" characters. They all played nice roles, and had their own great stories.
On an unrelated note, .. Larsa was adorable. xD

When you really look at each of the six main characters (except for Penelo cuz she's worthless) they all have their own story that you see play out over the course of the game, so much so that I dotn think it's incorrect to say that any one of them could be THE main character.

Omg x_x It would have been nice to see Balthier as the *leading man*, but I don't think it would have suited him well.
Vaan was chosen to be the leading man probably because he shows the stories of the people through his eyes. If they had made say Basch the main character, we would have to see the story through the eyes of someone who wants honor -- we'd totally think differently of Balthier who is a dishonorable sky pirate.
Or something...
