I loved the Monkees until I saw my first Beatles movie (Life on a farm, in the early 60's, in the middle of nowhere keeps one away from a lot of movies). Then I knew that the Pre-Fab Four was just that, a copy. I understand the big upset over this program (US version), as I loved it until I saw the original UK show.
Somehow; "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" falls flat...again....
@WasLilChrisnowbigish I was living in the US when the original aired, it was, like most BBC show's, shown on BBC America, but BBC America is only avaliable on the highest premium cable package, so it wasn't on a mainstream channel
lol i just watched the american series and it is TERRIBLE! such a rip off on the british one and the dramatic pauses to create suspense are too short. i felt like i was watching a comedy. American keep to making funny movies like american pie PLEASE PLEASE stay away from drama your accent just sound so so cheesy
I liked the US version for a lot of reasons. The UK version is GREAT... but you'll appreciate the American one as a failed experiment with brilliant moments. Every song is from 1974 (the year it's set in), and every episode has a central theme that neatly matches the main song of that week.
no u dumbass them stupid yanks can't even get that right its 1972 from this shit u.s version and 1973 from the u.k, im british and we brits make a lot better comedy than you yanks.
@cpj93070 - I sussed out that u might be a limey when u called me a yank. Many of my countrymen are quite stupid; I'm not one of them. Am I addressing a British Member of MENSA perchance? The USA vers. is set in '74. The UK in '73. The British are generally better than ANYBODY at acting. At comedy however, ur countrymen EAT UP our MOVIE COMEDY - u spend over a billion pounds a year on US comedy. We hold our own. As for TV, we don't understand all ur references - you don't understand all of ours.
@Corporations8MyBaby I reckon the US is quite like France in that respect though - TV-wise it doesn't seem to import so much; rather, companies re-make shows in the fashion of something the public can understand.
To be fair - the opening scenes were done quite well. The Twin Towers being there was a much more powerful moment than seeing a poster about a motorway being built.
But that's about it.
I think remaking it was a bad idea - they should have made a new show on similar lines with different characters.
Who is Gene Hunt? Philip Glennister of course - anyone else trying to play him looks like a spastic in a magnet factory.
The english one is so much better. Typical americans to copy -exactly- what we do as they see that theres a market to for it. Ashes to Ashes pales in comparison by the way, and yes, John Simm is amazing, and I mean ofc- He -is- the master!--
John simm is so talented.. i mean some people act exactly the same in different roles.. but you can really see him as that person if you get me.. hes amazing <3
I havn't yet seen the English one (however I obviously want to if I am trolling for youtube clips) but the US one was good (although I have nothing to compare it with).
Stick with it, when the US one was good, it was great, when it was bad, it was terrible. There are a few great episodes, their take on the football hooligan episode was good and the Whoopi Goldberg episode was amazing, but be warned the finale is a real stinker, you will scream at the TV
American version is too dark, all of there TV show's are. If you compare ours (UK) colours, bright enough to see all of the colours of RGB mixed together.
Now let's go to America's, right well, here with have a mardy plod that is a nice dark brown tan "color" with a tint of very dark blue, mixed with a segment of green. Reminds me of the old cinema screen's...

New York has much more of a melting pot and does appear to be much more diverse. I remember in the USA LOM when Tyler turns around and there are the Twin Towers. For us here in the US, that's a sight that hits right in the guts, even for someone on the west coast like me. So can we agree that they're both good?
But the 70s were a lot more crucial time to the brits. We had just got over WW2 it had left a big mess in economy ,a large proportion of family had died in it. We had just changed from pounds and shillings , to pounds and pence . Are music was changing ,as well as our ideas .The country was a lot angrier , drugs , dead end jobs , miner strikes .Overall , it made for much grittier television .
I agree the original is better, but I also think the early 1970s were a turning point for the US: Vietnam, the end of the Bretton Woods system, New York nearly bankrupt, and maybe an awareness that the goodwill of WWII had run its course. So while the original takes its inspiration from The Sweeney, the remake is grounded more in The French Connection.
My name is Sam Tyler. I had an accident and woke up in New York. Am I mad, in a coma, or Jason O'Mara? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.
John Simm and Phillip Glenister strike me as the much better acting duo to front a series like this. I can't get my head around the American version of Gene Hunt: doesn't seem half as hard-boiled, foul-mouthed or witty.
I am interested in comparing the two different versions myself, from the standpoint of a more impartial (culturally wise) point of view. Being an Aussie from well after 1973 (but knowing cultural history quite well). I like the small differences like cell vs mobile, they are nice. The big ones are too well big and obvious lol.
Here is Australia we have a bit of influence from both British and American culture, as well as our own things.
I do like those little differences myself, though I must admit the British sense of drama and humour is very similar to us Aussies, but I think we have remained fairly close to our "mother" country (very loose and don't mean offence just referring to British colonisation).
Now Channel 10 are continuously showing promos for LOM US I have the issue of having the David Bowie song stuck in my head. It wasn't enough that I got that when it was on ABC or when I watch the DVD of the British version.
well if you watched it first of course..the one your used to is always better in your mind,i feel American version is better and probly would not have watched the bbc one.
British version probably is better... For a British audience. However, I think the American adaptation works very well for U.S viewers. It's the same tale, changed to accommodate cultural differences. For example,
in the first episode, no American would know (or give a crap) about some Manchester bypass), but they would relate to the World Trade Center's Twin Towers..)
I tend to agree with this I suppose. LOM in the UK has become a legendary TV series watched by a far % of the population so nothing will come close to it in our eyes. You are right about the cultural differences and the events which were different in both countries. Just wish they had changed the dialogue a bit more from the original!
'My name is Sam Tyler. I had an accident and woke up in New York. Am I mad, in a coma, or American? Whatever's happened, it's like I've handed on a different planet. Now if maybe I can work out the reason, I can get home.'

This is actually pretty decent. It is hard, as a fan of the original to distance yourself, but I've enjoyed every episode of the US version so far.
Although, having said that, Harvey is too, too old for Gene and the fact that they can't swear on US network tv, does reduce Gene's role in the show
