In 1977, in my junior year at Rice University, Doug Michels of Ant Farm was our visiting critic for the 2nd (I think) semester. He took us to see this house, already deteriorating. Great to see this video. By coincidence, just returned from Amarillo, where I saw Cadillac Ranch.
Amazing architecture! BTW - Who did the soundtrack? Do I hear a KORG Electribe synth in there? ;-) (I'm taking a break from playing it to watch videos...)
I did the soundtrack and yes it's an Electribe... This video is now being played daily at an exhibit at the MoMA in New York City, and you can hear the song clearly :-)
My husband and I were caretakers on MOJO lake for Marilyn Lubetkin (Oshman) from 74-76. Those people really liked to party and so did we. She hosted many parties bringing people down in buses. The fishing was fantastic also! We just loved working here. After we left another couple took over who were good friends. It is sad that it is in such disrepair. The inside was fantastic. You could sit on the toilet at ground level and be looking out a window. Ant Farm belongings were found also.
@DividedByTheLight I can't remember, it's been three years since I've been there, all I know is that it's around forty-five minutes away from Houston, Texas. Anyway, if you did find it, when you try to get a good look at it by zooming in it's in a forrest so it would probably say "We do not have imagery at this height" or whatever. Also when you look at it from an aerial view you can barely see it because it's shrouded by trees.

Then make an easter egg hunt out of it! It is indeed visible on Google Earth. The house has been vandalized several times in the past which is why its location is not public.
I was contracted to demolition the illuminated walkway in 1995ish by the Oshman's. An amazing house inside and out. It's a shame that it is run down now. I thought there intention was to renovate it when we removed the walkway. I guess it's location makes it flood prone though.
A house shaped this unusually, that is this white and located on a body of water near Angleton, Texas, is pretty easy to find on Google Earth. It took me about two minutes. I remeber reading about this house when I was a teenager and I realy loved it, still do. There are several other free-form ferro-cement houses out there and I haven't seen one yet that I haven't liked. Not a cheap way to build if you do it right, but the results are delightful.
Who was this house built for? Were they rich? Such a wild house. I love 70s architecture. Such a shame it has fallen into disrepair. I wonder what the inside now looks like.
It was built for the woman who owns Oshman's Sporting Goods, who is rich. The inside is warped and the siding on the walls is gone. Most of the plywood is still mostly intact.
i'm from angleton, and i remember hearing about this house when i was in high school. i've never actually seen it, but i remember the stories and now seeing this video, it matches all the descriptions i remember hearing
I am from Angleton and my Mom was friends with the caretaker. I got to go inside the house when I was like 7 or 10. I remember being absolutely amazed! I wanted to live there so bad!! Go Wildcats!
what is the name of this song anyway? id love to find more like it. I have no clue what direction to look as there is so much bad music making it harder to find gems in any genre. do you know?
The song is my original work, composed for the film... more like it is available on my Myspace Music page for "Polyp & Medusa" (myspace dot com slash labaronesa)
I'm glad you have taken the time to preserve this piece of your father's work. It would have been wonderful to see it in it's original glory, but even the hull that remains is neat to see. Thanks for the videos mandaclair!
It's actually more based on an Ant Farm inflatable called ICE 9. Also, if you watch the design and construction videos, you'll see that the phallic design is sort of coincidental -- that it evolved from earlier concepts that were not as blatant. So: yes, it's got a suggestive shape, but that fact is totally secondary to the evolution of the design concept.
A four-part series is now online, where Richard Jost recalls and explains the design-and-build process. Total time is about 26 minutes. Click on our list of YouTube videos... and enjoy!
It is in Angleton... It is the House of the Century (Commisioned by Marilyn Oshman of Oshman's Sporting goods) It was built by the art collaborative Ant Farm and design by Doug Michels of Cadillac Ranch fame. The house was featured in playboy.
The house was a collaboration between Ant Farm (including Doug Michels), and my father, architect and builder Richard Jost, who did the construction drawings and spearheaded the building process. A new film is nearing completion where he describes the design-and-build process by which he was able to transform Doug's vision into a tangible reality. My parents were living in an Air-stream trailer near the construction site when I was born in 1972.
This structure is absolutely in Angleton Texas, but it's on private property. Even on private property there have already been problems with local kids shooting out the windows with a .22, and this is why the actual location will NOT be posted.
awesome this is an iconic relic to modern architecture , would like to see more footage of how the house looks now.would have loved to have built one too.

I've been in that house. When I got there it hadn't been occupied for around 30 years, so it wasn't in good shape.

This is amazing! The combination of video and music is just perfect. It surely has that space / alien atmosphere.
