Whatever taxes you pay is nothing compared to no income at all. So really, you should not be encouraging anybody who is willing to be a customer to not come simply because they can not or do not tip, since no matter if they tip or not they would still be helping keep your job and the jobs of others by supporting you and your employer. By saying only "tippers" should come to your employer; you are encouraging financial harm to your employer, your coworkers and yourself.
This would mean you really don't care about the restaurant and how many customers they bring in; you only care about the tips they give you personally. This tells us that not only do you not care about the success of a restaurant but frankly that you shouldn't be allowed to work at a restaurant because you are more concerned about the meager tip you receive than the continued success of your employer.

@videos4mydad . Yes, if you don't get tipped the employer has to make up the difference to equal minimum wage. Its called the Federal Tip-Credit Law (dates back to the 1930's). The employer gets to take "credit" for the employees tips in order to meet Federal Min. Wage Standards. That's why many restaurants add the tip in to your bill. The employers want to make sure that you the customer pays the employees wages. Nice little scam from Uncle Sam.

You have to look at it through that context to see how obnoxious it sounds to some people when the tipping expectation is raised and waiters bitch when they are not tipped 20% (which is a pretty big chunk). High end restaurants attract high end clientele who usually tip, so no serious problem there (Also the service is waaay better). The problem is at low end restaurants like: Dennys, TGIF, and IHOP. They hire classless people to serve classless people (not everyone of course).
Legally a TIP is a non-mandatory gift that you can't sue people for not providing. If restaurants were smart, they would call it "Servers Fee". A fee is backed up in all courts of law. Give people an opportunity to take advantage of you, and they will 9/10 times.
I feel like the anger should be directed at whoever decided that this system works, not at the customers. We need to put energy towards making it so servers get paid properly and so that tipping can really mean "you did a good job so here is a bonus" and not "you did a good job but also this is mandatory for me to do so you aren't screwed."

@crudzy It's not true that they get taxed 15% on the sales they make. They get taxed on the tips they claim. The restaurant gets taxed on the sales they make, not the servers. I would work 75 hour paychecks and my check would sometimes be VOID or only $20 because you are taxed on your tips. You are also taxed on cash tips because there are tracking systems from restaurants if your cash tips are not in the same ballpark as your credit card tips... come one man, get a clue.

It may be true for service industry that tip is extra but in restaurant it is an unspoken rule that it is a must. The cost of meal would have been more expensive if the owners have to pay minimum wage to their employees so they pass on the responsibility to customers to pay servers tips.

Being a server myself, I've come across the, "I don't have to tip" people many a time. Now if I give shitty service, that's one thing. I don't even have the audacity to expect anything in that case. However, I've given excellent service on a massive bill before, only to get a terrible/absent tip in the end. I remember people like that. The employer gets to take "credit" for the employees tips in order to meet Federal Min. Wage Standards. That's why many restaurants add the tip in to your bill. The employers want to make sure that you the customer pays the employees wages. Nice little scam from Uncle Sam.

Many people are unaware of how the system works. You have to look at it through that context to see how obnoxious it sounds to some people when the tipping expectation is raised and waiters bitch when they are not tipped 20% (which is a pretty big chunk). High end restaurants attract high end clientele who usually tip, so no serious problem there (Also the service is waaay better). The problem is at low end restaurants like: Dennys, TGIF, and IHOP. They hire classless people to serve classless people (not everyone of course).

Legally a TIP is a non-mandatory gift that you can't sue people for not providing. If restaurants were smart, they would call it "Servers Fee". A fee is backed up in all courts of law. Give people an opportunity to take advantage of you, and they will 9/10 times.

I feel like the anger should be directed at whoever decided that this system works, not at the customers. We need to put energy towards making it so servers get paid properly and so that tipping can really mean "you did a good job so here is a bonus" and not "you did a good job but also this is mandatory for me to do so you aren't screwed."
I mean, I work in customer service but I don't get tips because my paycheck makes sense. Servers get screwed by the government AND customers and that sucks.

If you don't have the money to tip, don't go out and get an extravagant meal like filet mignon. The difference between going to McDonald's and a upscale restaurant is the SERVICE. At McDonald's You pay for your food at the register and you carry it back to your table and eat. At a nice restaurant, you are getting much more than at a fast food joint. You have some one WAITING ON YOU.... If this person did their job and made your meal enjoyable, then tip them accordingly.

@crudzy It's not true that they get taxed 15% on the sales they make. They get taxed on the tips they claim. The restaurant gets taxed on the sales they make, not the servers. This chick is just dumb, but not anywhere near as retarded as shareecethomas' fat ass. Oh, and by the way. Most servers don't claim the majority of their cash tips so they don't pay taxes on them AT ALL! They do however have to pay tax on the tips they get from credit cards because there is no way of hiding it.

@aaronrocs They ARE taxed on your total sales... which is called a tip out, which goes to the bartender, busser, ect. Then you are also taxed by the government on your tips. I would work 75 hour paychecks and my check would sometimes be VOID or only $20 because you are taxed on your tips. You are also taxed on cash tips because there are tracking systems from restaurants if your cash tips are not in the same ballpark as your credit card tips... come one man, get a clue.

Tip is a payment OVER the salary for a GOOD (as a costumer thinks!) service. It is NOT obligatorily.
If waiters don’t get descent salary that’s not the costumers worry and nether the costumer is at fault.

It may be true for service industry that tip is extra but in restaurant it is an unspoken rule that it is a must. The cost of meal would have been more expensive if the owners have to pay minimum wage to their employees so they pass on the responsibility to customers to pay servers tips.
