I didn't try it, but you would go for k1,k1,p1,p1 (k1 front layer,k1 back layer,p1 front layer, p1 back layer)

You're totally right, You just have to remember to keep but its not that simple. You have to hold the yarns in the right spot otherwise it won't look right.
